How long does it take before your new car is just a car again

Featured Replies

For me, it's just a car when you give up trying to clean the brake dust crud off the alloys. So far a weekly wash n wax including groping inside the rims of the 5 spoke Golus alloys has done the trick, but due to a recent illness, it has been neglected for a whole month so I spent over 2 hours the other day cleaning the wheels, even removed the fronts from the car to attack them with a clay bar and fresh rim wax, fortunately they still came up like new so with over 14k miles covered in 9 months, the honeymoon continues!

Hmmmm. Not really sure I'd be admitting in public to a "fresh rim waxing" but, each to their own Matt.

Opel Ascona 3.2V6 (omega block)

MK2 Yellow Cav GL (C20GET pontiac block)

Sorry last one should have read 72 not 82 (Manta A)

Also an 83 cav I rescued for £100. Oh and a Portuguese Chevrolet Monza!

From your name though.. I have a really soft spot for 70/80s escorts / cortinas from my Grandad who loved them. For me it was opel as when my mum died I was just ten, and I got her Jamaica Yellow cav GL! [/quote)

Nice collection mate, all rare and worth saving,

Cheers cortina, do you have one as your name suggests?!

Back to the thread topic too - picking mine up on Thursday and have extracted the video of the new car and downloaded it. Looks amazing, I can't wait! ust hope they can build the new drive in time..

Exhausting trying to keep the car intact. Still a couple more weeks before the holidays which is my main objective.

After that, going to try and forget about being so cautious and just use it as a car.

It's normal to want to keep it in good condition as it costs so much but not if it spoils the fun.

At the end of the day a few knocks isn't really going to effect the resale price.

For me it's a question of how long it takes me to catch up with all my friends and bore them about how much I love it. Once I've got everybody at least once I can settle down!

I suspect there would be a significant difference between the SE owners and the VRS owners on this, with one at around 1 month average and a significant proportion of the other at never. Or is that making assumptions?

Had a ceramic coating put on my alloys, makes cleaning them an absolute dream! Wheels definitely get filthier way quicker than any other part of the car though.

Its true the the VRS does attract a lot of attention. First time I have been told that the car is really nice by a stranger in the street. Also many people ogle it as you drive by. That's a reason why you feel a little more concerned when parking up as It does stand out a bit. Attention can be good and bad. My plan to blend in the rougher districts is to leave it gather some dust.. cloaking mode.

If it is making assumptions,

you're right about me ! I've got an S spec estate with a couple of options, and bought it to do a job - ferry me, Mrs Classic, 2 kids and a dog.

I look after it as it represents a large cost, but I'm not being anywhere near as anal as I have with past cars. It will get washed and cleaned out (thoroughly) every couple of months or so. With trips to France, supermarkets, 15k+ miles per year its pointless trying to keep it immaculate.

Coming home to find another alloy damaged by a kerb after just having one repaired = old car!

To me, it's just another car when I stop playing with the toys on it and just drive it.

Now 10 months on , 9800 miles travelled and I enjoy being behind the wheel now as much as I did when I first picked it up.

Starting to see more about now, saw two white estates just yesterday, on a local 50 mile trip out. (common)

Love it to bits and after having had the first free service completed last week, no reported problems to date. Tyre wear 4 mm front and 6-7mm back on Conti 2's

Consistently getting 36 plus mpg. So more that happy with that.

Car is a fantastic family carrier and once on my own and free to do so goes like s..t of a shovel.

So yeah think I'm a happy bunny right now, and not hopping off anywhere else right now.

Oil consumption approx. 1 litre per 10000 miles maintaining the level at top of crosshatch on the stick. (Bit better than my partners old CAVE Fabia vRS)

Still very wary of were I leave her, almost 6 months in.

In fact, I parked up at a premier inn while away, and leaned out of the room window to tell someone to watch his kid getting out after he parked his car way too close for my comfort

For me, the honeymoon period finished the day i decide to replace it with something else.

Even then, i ended up washing my Audi the day before i traded it in, just in case i ended up not getting the Skoda.

2000 miles for me

Urm.........5 years old this December and I still treat it like new!

Had my 2.0 TDi 150 Elegance estate for nearly 7 months, great car, really great car but epically bored with it. Unfortunately going to have to keep it a while until its equity position becomes a little more sensible.

Also going to soon be going from approx 400 miles work commuting a month to over 2k so will need to shift it on sooner rather than later and go back to a company car.....at least that would likely be a Mk7 Golf GTD so not all doom and gloom :-)
