DTUK Pedal Box - Fitted and Happy

Featured Replies

Have one fitted in my A6 for over 40T miles now.

Wasnt convinced by posts at first, so had to try it myself.

Am convinced now, big advantage of this pedal box is the different settings you can choose. So you can adjust the level of sensitivity to the sensitivity of your right foot.

Makes the car better to drive.

And I drive a box in my 3.0tdi (no DTUK, but the MTM Cantronic), does that make me bad? :-D

I've been reading through this thread again, as my throttle on my petrol VRS certainly seems to give the impression of lag, and I'm pretty sure this isn't turbo lag, but must be down to the fly by wire throttle.

Now I don't know if the TDi throttle has a similar laggy effect, but my question to those who have used the pedal boxes, is does the box remove the lag?

To me, the throttle response on my petrol vrs doesn't feel as crisp as I'd like, it makes me feel a bit disconnected from the car, for want of a better expression. Don't get me wrong, the car is brilliant, but if i could lose that laggy feel, that would make it for me.

So folks, do you think this might do the trick for me?

I would say it certainly gets the lag out of the way a lot quicker, the power comes in much earlier. If I turn the pedal box off now it feels like I have a sponge under the accelerator pedal, so yes it makes a big difference.

The the price, they are a good mod.

Which setting do you have yours on Steve ?

I've gotta agree laodswine, does feel a little lacking till I find kickdown then it takes off like a kicked cat, accidential of course.

You will have to find out yourself, as I am driving a tiptronic I use the Sport Setting on +1. Drove with +2 also, but the Response is too quick and the tiptronic kicks down a gear too fast.

Friend of mine drives a C63 with the pedal box and thought what the heck I will start with Sport Plus and +3.

Well he tried that only once, the car just put down huge black lines on his first attempt.

I think you should declare the box to your insurance company as a modification.

I have had some companies say factory fitted options were modifications from the standard car.

Give any insurance company a chance not to pay out and they will take it.

I'm running it on Sport +3...

As well as having the CRDTon map 4+3, so I am running on maximum settings really, yes it can be a handful, but you learn to adapt to the power increase and I find it to be fine. It's learning when to be able to go full toe down. Too early and you will break traction immediately.

You need feed the power in, rather than trying to floor it.

Thanks for the replies Steve, looks like I will be giving Andrew a call, i think. ;)

I managed to get drive in O3 with one of these fitted today and I can now confirm, these remove any throttle lag in any mode and what I found really quite useful was, you can drive in Eco Mode and not feel like a crumblie, save a bit of juice and still have all the go you want when you want it. Very good bit of kit.

I see this thread has been idle for a while, but I´ll give it a try anyway. I´ve read these and other forums regarding the pedalbox. As yet I haven´t seen any remarks about electronic errors. However, when decided to try it out and installed the pedalbox today on my Octavia III 1.8 TSI DSG I got several errors saying ACC, proactive passenger protection and hill hold are inactivated. Currently got these errors on sport and eco, but even the box was turned to off mode. Has anyone else had any issues with onboard electronics?

It appears the electrical fault was due to my own faulty installation. I reinstalled the box again tonight with more precise instructions from the dealer. Now the system works without fault. I think what I did wrong last time was either leaving the key in the ignition, leaving the car door open while installing the box, or failing to press the cabel that  connects the the pedalbox to the car all the way in, the latter being the most likely. It was nevertheless sufficiently connected for the car to answer throttle commands. From my short drive tonight I think this product is exactly what my car was missing:-) For now it seems like eco 3 plus or sport 3 minus will be my favoured setting. Sport in the standard setting downshifts too easily, but this might be due the DSG software favoring high rpm with the 1.8 TSI compared to the higher torque of the 2.0 TDI versions.

I was also using sport or eco program the first two weeks when I had the pedalbox, and now I've started favoring the sport+ program. In sport, there is still a bit of a lag of power just in the beginning of the gas pedal's movement.

Very useful thread, I posted a question recently regarding the initial lag/dead travel on my 1.4TSI DSG and was pointed to the DTUK 'Pedal Box', I then came across this thread. Getting more enthusiastic as I read the reviews but came across the last post #37

This is the problem I have and find it a little annoying and if there is still a bit of lag it's hardly worth shelling out £179 even with the £50 off.

Looking at the graph on the website the start point is hidden under text but would seem to incline from the start, whereas my throttle seems to be a reversed 'L' a little flat to start with then a large dollop comes in! This morning I left it at idle and slowly pushed the throttle while looking at the rev counter and there was a definite delay before the rev's began to increase.

Kinda depends on the settings you have the pedalbox on, the fine tuning (+1,2 or 3) is the one to eliminate lag and +3 totally eliminates any form of lag to the exsistent that Stop/start will not even enable.

Kinda think you're pussyfooting this a bit, doesn't the Pedalbox come with 14 day moneyback no quibble offer ? if so, just get one fit it and see, if you don't feel it does what it should, send it back.  Simples

You could always try the DTUK website, it has an online support messaging service, I've always found them available to answer any questions but, its upto you really.

Thanks! I did not see the bit about 14 day offer  . I will have another look later.

Sorry, TMWNA but it seems DTUK does not offer a 'no quibble' 14 day return. I prefer to find out as much as I can before I decide to buy something especially around this sort of price. I also need to contact my insurance to see what they might try to skin me for! Add it all up and see if its worth it.........

From DTUK T&C's: (Paragraphs 10 & 11 not 1 & 2 as the quote!)

  1. A '14-day Money Back' (7-day Trade Sales) return which was supplied correctly but is no longer required may attract an administration/restocking fee. Performance Tuning and Fuel Saving systems may be charged at £25+VAT for ECO3, RED POWER and PEDALBOX systems, £40+VAT for CRD-2, CRD-T and FSR systems and £30+VAT for all other systems. Performance parts attract varying fees of not less than 10% of the purchase price. ‘Combo' deals may attract a fee totalling the combined fees of those charged for the kits if supplied individually. Where one item from a ‘Combo' is returned the full RRP of the item kept and the fee for the item returned will both be subtracted from the total paid. The remainder will be the amount refunded. We will only refund via your original payment method. Refunds will be processed within 14 days of confirmation of return.
  2. If a unit is returned to us within 14 days (7-day Trade Sales) and found to be faulty a replacement system will be issued or a full refund offered.

A try out will cost £30.00 if I find that it does not suit or give me what I want.

Anyway, a large thank you for your link, I had not heard of the Pedal Box until then, as usual the help on this forum is exceptional to us Skoda newbies

Sorry ajw1100, no intention to deceive just hadn't read it fully and having fitted some, I've not had to send one back hence, not entirely sure of the full terms and conditions which was why I asked about the moneyback instead of stating it did.  Not heard of an insurance company charging anyone more for fitting one either but, as you say they do like to skin customers.

Shame your not more local or I could arrange a test drive for you.  Have you tried looking up your local Briskoda meetings to see if anyone there has one fitted, it could be useful in helping you decide, at the very least you could meet some like minded people.

Thought I would see if I could get used to the lag/dead spot/delay in throttle response while on holiday traveling around North Yorks (Lovely place). I mentioned my thoughts on the throttle to swmbo to see if she also found the same, she did, pulling onto a busy roundabout she found that she needed to accelerate a bit quicker than normal so pushed down further and nothing happened, she then pushed a bit harder/quicker as that lorry was getting rather too close, then the car took off like a scalded cat which took her by surprise as the traction control came into play to stop the wheel spin!

I do not drive in sport mode and use normal around 80% of the time and eco on 20% (Motorways). I am not after accelerating as fast as possible. I just want to get rid of that sodding dead throttle travel.

ANYONE around WATFORD (Hertsfordshire) with one of these fitted to a 1.4 petrol I could try......... ;) .

Well, phoned Churchill just to see if it was okay with them. I explained that it did not increase bhp or otherwise make the car faster, it was for me a solution to the throttle lag anyway the car came with a Sport Mode option if I wanted to go faster. They phoned UK Insurance Ltd the underwriter who came back with "A pedal box was a declined modification" so that's a no go.

Mind you the time it took the Churchill agent to contact UK INs and relay their message back to me was hardly time to ask the question so I am not sure if they actually did or not. I might try writing to them for a reason why they deem it a 'declined modification' So, to install one would set me back around £179 plus I'd lose 7 months cover and need to find a new insurer. Pity.......

Hi,

was wondering how easy was to detach the original connector from the pedal.

I can feel a tab but - once pulled upwards - did you simply pulled the connector off the pedal or?

Where did you fix the unit and how did you fix the cable?

TIA,

Yep the Pedalbox simple plugs inbetween the connectors, you can then use the velcro pad provided to fix it to the lower section of your dash or hide it below the dash.

Word of warning, They don't come out as easily as the OEM connectors but, it can be turned off completely should you not wish it to be seen/scaned.

Thank you TMWNA,

yesterday I wanted to "test" the click/unclick BEFORE installing and joined the male and female connector of the unit.

I ended with the connectors stuck and I shall have to buy a second pair of good pliers to try to separate them!

:swear:

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally detached them thanks to the pliers. Is the removal of the original connector similarly difficult?

There is a plastic tab on the original connector. I pull it but the connector is stuck to the pedal....
