So we can ignore the cars warning at 9400 and just take it in at 10,000? Still the service warning being up unnecessarily for the 600 miles will annoy the hell out of me.

Evidently mine is set at fixed, as it has the 9400 warning. However I may ask the dealer to change this setting, after all it's only a warning.

Dealer can only change between fixed or variable.

Iirc you can change the interval limits with vcds, so you could make the limit 10k between services.

But, if dealers allow 500 miles grace, you'd only have 100 miles to play with

A few wild of the mark 'guesses' in this thread - the oil is the same between fixed and variable services nowadays on diesels, I assume the same on petrol.

 

A word of warning for those going on variable to save money - if you intend to keep the car long term rather than trade in at 36/42 mth, don't bother. My O2 ate 2 turbos in 180k miles, and the turbo place I use asked straight away if I was on variable servicing. They reckoned that it was the main factor in turbo bearing failure on VAG diesels. My mileage was mainly motorway as well.

 

You can switch between fixed and variable at any time, dealers may 'misinform' you that you can't.

 

Whilst under warranty I would want my car in to the dealers every 9400 so that any recalls get done, any updates to modules get applied, and they will no doubt pro-actively look for warranty work to perform.

Personally I prefer variable, my Astra was 20K, however I used to change the oil myself in between at 10K approx. so best of both worlds I guess.

I had huge arguments with Skoda over this as I was doing 35k per year when I got my car in June with the free servicing.

 

a bigger problem was that I wanted a service pack and I could not do both. Skoda would not give me a credit for the service, and with such high mileage I had to keep it on variable

 

just had my first service at 18k, so would only have got two free services, but they make it so that you can only take out the service plan prior to 10k miles.

I do approx 25k per year and also wanted a service plan to cover the car up to 4 years old. The advice I got from my dealer was to bring the car in every 10k during the free servicing, effectively ignoring the computer reminder at 9,400! Then at 30k they will switch me back to variable servicing and sell me a service plan for 3 services at...

He is right, oil change is a minor service, inspection is a major service, if you look in your service book it will show you what is done at each service.

Actually the second guess is incorrect. Only the diesels use the same type of oil regardless of service intervals. The petrols use different kinds of oil depending on which service interval you're on.

Either way, I'm not going on variable this time round. Once the warranty is out I'll use my trusted indie to do it with genuine parts every 9,400. I get a full service (oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and pollen filter) for about what Skoda charge for the small service anyway. The joys of having access to parts at trade prices and LongLife oil bought by the drum!

Used K&N before on plenty of cars - when you are paying about £6 trade inc VAT for a genuine air filter, you need to do a few services before the K&N pays for itself.

 

I've never really seen any difference between K&N and a good quality clean OEM filter on cars up to Stage 1, and that includes on dyno tests.

 

The only difference was when I fiitted a 57i induction kit on a 3.2 litre Isuzu V6 4x4 that was LPG converted - that made some induction roar.

That one for my 1.4 TSI but, I'm sure there's one for your old oil burner too.

60 notes for the placebo effect? Jeez, luckily enough, I think the good people at skoda gave me an air filter for free when I bought the car   :think:

I have a K&N Gen 2 kit on the Focus RS and the induction noise is sublime ... but doesnt give any extra power ... thats been proved in dyno runs.
