50p in windscreen air vent

Featured Replies

my 8 year old son threw a 50p coin in the car and it went down the windscreen demister air vent in the middle. Will it do any damage? how can i remove it? where would the 50p end up?

thanks.

how about one of those telescopic magnet things that extends out from a pen sized thing? most modern coins are made of plated steel so should be able to get it with a magnet

I cant even see where it went to, it dissapeared from view. it sounded like it went down a fair bit so im guessing its right in the system. if anyone knows what the airvents are like than is it safe to leave it there. i dont know the vent system but i do know theres a big fan and air con unit. will the 50p do any damage or would it work its way through and come out of the vents in the footwell

Just tried a magnet on a 50p, its not magnetic unfortunately.

It could end up where your pollen filter is under the glove compartment don't think it will do any damage to the fan or air con as air goes through the pollen filter first which is below the fan

yes quite right, apparently they are made of nickel.. so scrub that idea, it's copper coins that a made of steel if that makes sense..

i know pollen filters are removable, but is that an easy job on the fabia? if the 50p will do no damage then i'll leave it in, i'll live with the rattle.

Pollen filter is easy to remove. Under the glove box, two clips that slide, then it pulls/ drops down. Make sure you note which way it came out when you refit it.

Edit, seen yours is a MkII. Hopefully it's the same as a MkI which I described.

Okay i've just learnt where and how to change a pollen filter!  you were right, it was very easy.   there was plenty of leaves but still no 50p.

EDIT was pleased to see that it looks that if/ when the 50p works it way down it will just rattle around a big space.  but what is at the drivers side if it goes down that way?

sorry about being a noob here but at the mo im needing piece of mind and not a huge bill!

The next time you check the pollen filter there might be a packet of crisps or packet of Starburst instead of 50p, now that would be an optional extra.

You can keep your climate and cruise control, give me a dashboard mounted snack machine anytime !!

Use the high air setting often, and keep checking the filter. Either that or a dash strip! Perhaps you might be able to midge it along the route, with one of those thin wire pullers electricians use or a thin drain/plughole cleaning cable you get from diy shops.

Although it will cost you more then it will save!

I would find it sooner rather than later. These systems are full of electronic motors, flaps and doors. The motors don't stop till fully home. I worked for a automotive air con manufacturer for 4 years. A child put a pencil down the front vents which broke the big unit behind the dash. Cheeky sods tried to blame us till we found bits of pencil in the unit

That sounds expensive. there has been no sign of it  and the rattling has stopped. it must have lodged somewhere. anyone have a diagram of the vent system i can look at?

Not where i live, choc bars are 65p!

Solder wire is quite good if you want to send something thin down to try and dislodge it
