WORD OF WARNING dipping vRS oil level..

Featured Replies

If the engine has in VW 504 00 or better Long Life oil from the Service, it is as well topping up with the same and not the VW 502,

but if doing Oil and Filter changes sooner, then it makes little difference.

  • I have lost the will to live about oil!  It all seems more complex than brain surgery.  As a new VRS owner (1200 miles), and having read the handbook, I agree that there is a light that comes on to sa

  • Also after having had kittens about oil when I first came on here after buying my vRS I also want to give Dave's posts a big , I don't believe he is advocating anything lacksidaisical or dangerous he

It's funny this dodgy dipstick business - on the bmw 1-series forum I also use a lot of people moan about the car not having a dipstick at all! Some 1-series only have an electronic oil measurement system -handbook says just add a litre when the light comes on.......simples!! Maybe I should link to the topics on this site to give them some perspective lol! :-)

It does seem incredible to me that in this day and age, anyone is expected to faff about with a dipstick and to have to take account of the temperature, phase of the moon, etc., etc., etc.  I am somewhat surprised that one cannot have the oil temperature and pressure displayed on the digital display, along with conveniently positioned warning lights.  Perhaps it would be too distracting / disturbing?

One would think that with the uber-sophisticated ECUs we have these days the revs could be limited when the engine is cold.  In fact, some sort of record could be kept of oil & coolant temperature, oil pressure, RPM, etc. for diagnostic purposes.

This was 3 years ago, and still some never learn.

Kermit82 had the Oil Consumption test and the breather mod in 2012,

and i think then a replacement engine but not sure on that.

(But he got shot anyway, and somebody will have this car, new engine or not.)

There we go! BMW don't even bother with a dipstick.

So why can't we just wait for the light to come on too? Now common sense would state that VW or any manufacturer would not design an engine that the maximum amount of oil you could put in it would be the minimum amount of oil needed for operation.

So the bottom of the dipstick/ the point where the oil light comes on could the minimum amount of oil needed for the engine to perform normally and safely??

This is obviously separate to how quickly an engine burns through this quantity.

The Renault Scenic does not bother with a dipstick,

it does not mean you do not have bother, its usually the computer or sensor that goes wrong.

VAG just did not bother to design a different dipstick.

the same one gets used in a 1.2 or a 1.4, and in engine with a 3.6 or 3.9 oil capacity.

But it really dead easy to know there is enough oil in before a trip if you vehicle is on the flat, totally flat.

& if you do a long distance, it is easy enough after 5 minutes of stopping.

On a long journey if you start with the correct oil, you probably finish with the same quantity.

It is short, never up to temp trips that has oil getting used.

If you start a long trip with 1/4 below Oil capacity,

then you might well expect after a long trip or hard driving to use oil.

Read the Manual,  Page 168 , About Maintaining in 'Area A'.

the one Owners Manual that covers all engines,

&  on High Loads, Summer, Mountain Passes, Towing etc.

Motorways and such.  there it tells you about filling,  But not above.

Oh I agree George. I really do.

I'm just saying that maybe hyper analysing the dipstick could cause one to overfill and cause more harm than good.

I agree Tom, a false positive WAS what happened to me last night.... the fewer times you check it, the less you top it up I beleive! lol.. look at Damo, huge problems on his first engine, ignored the oil level on his nreplacement engine, and had no problems! lol..

Just to add to this, I had to put 1 litre in my new engine.

That was after 20ish thousand miles.

Now I burn more oil than ever but it is a different car ;)

Edit - it doesn't have a dipstick either :'( how will I cope?

I think I read somewhere that Audi don't have a dipstick now either... I might be mistaken.

I can confirm this IS the case

I dont think you can hyper analyse the dip stick. If you check it when the engine is hot and looks low top it up. But make sure you dont top it up too much. My method of a couple of squares below the hatched top limited works for me. As its not filled to top tolerance and still within spec this ensures there isnt too much oil or too little......a happy medium...... this method might not suit everyone but it puts my mind a rest so i can crack on with enjoying the car.

Lol, hope it doesn't use too much damo! Looking forward to seeing your new car :)

And just to add to the randomness and complete my info, got to work tonight , put the car in the same bay as last night, engine hot ( I was a little late ;) ) after 5 mins , did the hit check , bear on mind the cold check last night was barely touching the dipstick , well below min.. Guesses?! Lol.... It was above the min, but less than the cold dip in the morning! :o

Makes NO sense! ;)

Well it should be below what showed with the cold dip in the morning, that had all the oil in the sump and it came further up the dipstick.

Oil higher, none in the Oil Filter Housing or around the head,  equals more oil on the stick,  Ooo Ar Missus.

Was that above the Crosshatch in the morning , or are you running with less than the 3.6 Oil Capacity.?

Ha ha ha ha.........................this thread to a close!!!!!

Page 22 for anyone that has not lost the will to live,

To see where the Oil goes to sleep at night

After draining from the Turbo, Head & Oil Filter and various places oil goes after the first turn and start of the engine.

And where the bottom of the dipstick gets poked.

Lost the will to live.....praying for datsun in my next life........couldnt resist had to down load.... better than watching take me out with the misus so i ll ponder and further lose the will to live....lol.. beer nums the pain

George 64 pages.........beer wins!!!!!

Just a thought but has anyone gone to extreme and drained the angry donkey and refilled with a carefully measured out 3.6 litres of oil and then after the oil has had time to get to sump then taken a reading on the dipstick?

Yes many times. A good few Twinchargers, and i dip every one i see at Auctions or Dealerships.

Weighed it measured it, and done all kinds of things with it.

& in my car i run, 3.7 litres of 5w 40 Mobile 1,  that is at the top of the Cross hatch on a Jabozuma or a hot dip,

and below the Top Orange Blob when cold.

This was 3 years ago, and still some never learn. <snip>

Was Kermit 82's engine the earlier version?  Is it entirely reasonable to lump together the CAVE & CTHE engines and to suggest that all the characteristics and faults of the former apply equally to the latter?  Surely VAG would have learned something from their experience with the earlier engine?

Wouldn't that be cheating?

In a previous life I used to be an engine builder, we used to make the dipsticks in house an adjust by filling with correct amount of oil then set the length of stick to suit, it was pretty full proof that way.

I checked mine cold after 700 miles and it was 2/3's above hatched area just under the top orange blob, by everything I've read my conclusion was that this was acceptable and I'll check again after couple more tanks of fuel go through. I take it Jabozuma is the nickname for a hot dip?

It's only cheating when the rule book clearly states that it prohibited   ;)

Jabozuma was a member that worried about oil, and even had it analysed.

So i do the Jabozuma my self.

Open the bonnet, dip the cold engine,  Up above the Top Crosshatch with enough oil.

So open the door, stick the key in, start the engine, and stop right away.

Dip it, and its easy to see with cold oil,

The level is the Oil from the Sump in the Oil Filter and around the Turbo a Head.

So for me, it shows at the Top of the Cross Hatch.

Now if i drive 30 miles or more and have hot oil,

stop wait 5 minutes, it reads the same as the Jabozuma.

So i no longer do hot dips, unless showing someone where the oil should be.

vhx26,

we talked CAVE & CTHE before,

& before October 2012, they were CAVE.

3 members here have failed CTHE engines, so yes they learned something, but did not resolve everything.
