Quick Question- one key or two?

Featured Replies

A friend of mine has just picked up his new Mercedes and found that it only had one key and it would cost another £300 if he wanted another. Does the Mk3 vRS come with two keys or one?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have a vrs but my Elegance came with 2 keys & I am almost certain they all come with 2.

I thought all new motors came with 2 keys although I do know that some marques supply a full function key & a limited function one.

Yes my vRS came with 2 keys :)

This sounds wrong to me.

I test drove an unregistered C250 CDI yesterday and there were 2 identical keys on the keyring.....

My VRS came with two keys.

One key with remote (battery) and one standard plain old key - or 2x keys the same with remote?

I guess one of each right so that you can take one diving.....

For me, two identical keys.  One for losing in a safe place and one for actually using.

£300 for a mercedes key? That's madness.  You can nearly get an oil and filter change there for that money.

Two identical keys

here tip - it is original VW parts No: 5G0837599A

Yep - 2 keys..

1 is in a safe place, which I can't recall at the moment but I'm sure I'll find it in some stupid place like a plant pot once I've trashed the house looking in all the sensible places.

1 is in my pocket (usually).

Was the merc brand new? In which case you normally get 2 keys - if it wasn't then I'd be asking the seller to supply a second key.

£300 for a key, yes I can agree with that as it will need cutting, housing and then programming.

I wouldn't touch a car that didn't have 2 original keys.

That doesn't look like mine - my key is sideways on (90 degrees) to what this is..  The housing looks right.

You sure? My key is exactly the same as that one with the exception of the nasty chrome bit at the top.

For the second time tonight I have been proven wrong - this happened once before... In 1988.. :)

Yep - I was looking at SWMBO's Furby key - Those are flat against the body..  The vRS is in line (if you get my meaning - if not I'll draw a picture)..

Which is really confusing in the dark when you are trying to get a key into a hole using the body shape as a guide.

What are we talking about again?  :giggle:

OT: My VRS came with two identical remote keys, looking like in the above picture. Only without the chrome. Which I like.

300gbp for a Mercedes key sounds cheap..!

Usually for a new key even for a peugeot you would pay that price..

They have you over a barrel (no pun intended) because they need to be programmed to the car for the immobiliser & central locking.

I would be suprised if any new car these days doesn't come with 2 keys, even if one of them is just a mechanical key.

My view would be, if you are paying several thousand pounds for a car, the dealer can give you a 2nd key for free.

In reality it is only costing them maybe 50gbp for the physical key, the rest is just labour time.

You sure? My key is exactly the same as that one with the exception of the nasty chrome bit at the top.

Ah that'll be the "premium" version of the key that the golf gets!

I remember when you used to get three keys with every new car. Even if you lost one the chances were good that you could still open the door and start the engine with one of your mates keys .

I had my mkIV Cortina stolen three times from outside the same pub. On all three occasions the car was found undamaged by the Police in the same street 3-4 miles away. On the final occasion the person/persons who borrowed my car left a wallet on the passenger seat containing enough money to the fill the car with petrol. The Policeman even handed the wallet to me, rather than keeping for themselves or "filing it away" as they would nowadays.

edit: Replacement keys used cost less than a fiver to replace. Nowadays thieves just mug you for your keys or break into your house and steal them if they want your car. The target is no longer just the car.

Anybody got a KESSY key to show us?

I dont think they're visually any different to normal keys....

why would there be a key for a keyless entry system

You still have door locks...and the RFID chip needs a home

They look identical to the normal ones.
