Electrical Fault. HELP

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've recently joined this forum in an effort to diagnose a problem with my father in-law's Skoda Octavia.

It a 57 Reg 1.9 TDi

The problem started at the being of Feb with the power steering light coming on very breifly, after a few  minutes driving this when off and all seemed fine.

Then the next day the car  would not start, Called the RAC and they suggested it was the started motor, took it to the garage, got the started replace. It worked for another few days.

Then it just stopped, No dash board lights, no electrics, just dead.

I checked the Battery and the battery fuse box, all seem fine.

Had a quick look at the other fuses and cant see anything wrong.

Its got me stumped. As it has now electrics at all, surely the radio should at least work.

Any help would be greatly  appreciated.

Many Thanks

Alex.

Have you checked the Earth connection?

Years ago I had a major electrical malady (ok, it was Italian, but still worth checking) which turned out to be a broken earth strap.

These can cause no end of weird faults & definitely worth ruling out if nothing else..

Other than that, I could only suggest a duff battery - I presume you've checked it for volts with a multi-meter?

Sorry I can't help any more than that but I hope you get it fixed asap.

A bad battery connection or earth at the body?

Check for voltage across the battery terminals and then from battery positive + to bare metal on engine block negative -.

If your battery checks out good but there's nothing across to engine/chassis then check voltage across battery positive + to chassis negative - on the bolt head where the lead fixes to chassis.

If there's power there the ground connection needs removal, cleaning and refitting, usually just accumulation of rust/corrosion.

Disconnect the battery lead first for safety.

If there is power from battery positive + to chassis negative - you'll have to check the battery positive + connection and work backwards to the fuses.

I hope this helps.
