Anyone driven a BMW M3?

Featured Replies

I am thinking that i may be in the market for an M3 3.2 and would like anyones opinion on them please. Only if you have actually driven one ;) I dont want the "i could have beat one" etc. How did it feel speed wise, how about handling? I would be selling my Octy if i do get one, i am only thinking about it as i fancy some rear wheel drive and a N/A engine. I reckon i would have about

Ridiculously quick impression here

Cheers, sounds good. I would be looking for a manual. Oh no.. they sound tempting. It would be a shame to go from an 03 plate to a R or similar!! Oh decisions decisions.

Drove the new M3 CSL recently and have to say I would sell my soul for one........................."AWESOME"

Back to reality..........The Octy vRS will have to do.

The one I drove was a '51 - not sure what the differences are with older ones. It was sold a few weeks after for about 24k. Not to me, I hasten to add! :D

e36 ... nice motor... not blindingly quick.. my evo vmaxed @ 160....

the e30 is the better drivers car.

but im biased.

Have heard bad things about the Evo version! VANOS is v.expensive when it goes wrong,

yup my vanos broke... but was warranty.....

the std car would be sub 8 mins in the right hands......

rumour has it old e30 325i can do sub 8 in the hands of a nutter.

But a furby would be faster ;)

I've not driven one so can't comment on that but have heard time and time again that servicing is massively expensive, typically

What is the Vanos? And yes i'll read EVO :) If a furby is faster i might have to swap my octy for my missus's Furby vRS then!

I think Vanos is BMW's variable valve timing for the inlet sides....if it has double Vanos it's done of the inlet and outlet.

Cheers Adrian

EVO are tuning an E36 M3 Evo but its the earlier version without the VANOS (which as Adrian said it a vqariable valve timing system), the earlier a la EVO mag's runs 290bhp as standard where the newer E36 Evo was just over 310bhp apparently.

by all accounts the 300+bhp ones hardly ran what BMW quoted and weren't as strong as the original.

the one EVO mag have has after market cams and runs 305bhp.

my bro's ex g/f's brother (keeping up?) had the latest shape (E46?) convertible, the one with the bulge in the bonnet and a 3.2 ltr 340bhp lump.

1 word as a pasenger..... manic....

side by side to 120mph on a private road with a Porsche Carrera 2s

Looks like i want to be looking for an E36 non Evo then.. cheers for the replies guys.

You really have to be sunbed orange with a gold chain, or a huge black dude to drive one.

Can't comment on the car though.

:)

What are the chances of a 25 yr old with no ncb getting insured on a e36 evo m3?

I hate BMW drivers, but love the cars. My mate has a 2 year old M3, and i have driven it. My frist impression is well put together, comfy, posy and WOW bloody fast. The car handles like a dream and stops on a sixpence. If i could afford one i would buy one, but then i would hate myself.

What are the chances of a 25 yr old with no ncb getting insured on a e36 evo m3?

Laughable...

I remember an old article in topgear magazine where they were looking out for the top car to get for

Hi Fasterbaby

I have owned both E36 M3 evo and E46 M3's. My own personal opinion is that the E36 M3 evo is everybit as good a car as the newer M3 IMO. The problem now is finding a good example.

The earlier pre '96 E36 M3's had 286 bhp, single VANOS, 5 speed box and the M3 evo improved on this formula 321 bhp, double VANOS, 6 speed box, revised suspension and better brakes.

Let me tell you though, the engine is just sublime and we are talking proper supercar sounds that will rev to 7400 rpm on E36. Handling is pretty good but it is tailored to understeer at the limit although there is plenty of power to get the rear drifting! I kept mine std. but I have heard a set of Eibachs help here a lot. One thing the the E36 models is that they had no traction control so it's the right foot that controls the wheels, so care and respect is needed!

The steering on the E36 models is far superior to the E46 model for feel and feedback put the rack could be quicker for such a performance machine IMO!

I have had indicated 155 mph from my E36 on the autobahn and it was still pulling like a train before I had to slow! The power delivery will be quite different to what you are used to. Although there is plenty of torque low down, it's not until you reach 5000 rpm that the fireworks start where the rev counter just whips round at speed that you just need to be ready to change before it bounces off the limiter!

One bit of caution though, be careful in the wet! When it snows, then it's better to leave it at home as there is so little traction and so much torque at tickorver that the rears just let go constantly on the lightest throttle openings!

If you can find one under warranty, then great as problems can be expensive to fix, although I have heard of stories of dealers fixing VANOS woes for free after contacting BMW GB as it's a known problem!

Cost of servicing is expensive but you can shop around. I was quoted
