Can the standard screen be upgraded to sat nav?

Featured Replies

I have posted in the relevant section although after 50 views, no response so thought I'd try here,..

I've found a 63 plate VRs that I like, however it doesn't have sat nav or cruise, the later I know can now be sorted, however is it possible to upgrade the standard screen to sat nav and what do you guys reckon the cost will be?

Would welcome your opinions,...

Assuming that by 'standard screen' you mean the Bolero radio, then yes. You'd have to take that unit out and replace it with a Sat-nav unit, e.g. Amundsen. You will have to fit the GPS sensor somewhere but that can normally be done quite easily.

Not sure how much an Amundsen sat nav will cost but it will definitely be more that buying Tom Tom.

Many thanks for the reply.

Any estimate on what it'll cost, I reckon a good £500 or so and then it starts getting in to the age old debate of whether it's worth it in view of having a £100 tom-tom?

I suspect it'll be a lot more than £500, I'd be surprised if it was less than a grand..

I thought the fact it would need to be enabled on the car by skoda sort of limits this at the moment, and as far as I'm aware, it's still a deal breaker at the moment. I'm sure I read that a user on here eventually sold his unit as the dealership couldn't even fit it in the end and skoda uk were little to no help?

I'm sure in the future it will be solved by someone though.

I was looking at upgrading the system in my mk2 and that was looking closer to 1000 for a decent one.

Because of the component protection on MQB cars it isn't possible atm. Skoda Denmark have told "us" that it should be possible during 2014 but the price will be the same as the list price and the nav will be coded to the VIN from the factory, then fitted at the dealers, and "paired" to the car by the factory thereby keeping the component protection intact.

You need to remember that the "sat-nav" is actually made from two different units, the one in the glove box (the brains) and the one in the dash (just the screen). So it's not a matter of just replacing the screen, since that won't give you anything extra. We've already had a member here trying to go from Bolero to Columbus, bought the new screen and everything and he couldn't get it to work, as the screens are coded to their own unit in the glove box and they form a pair. He ended up returning the Columbus screen back to the vendor. As Trekster has said, it isn't possible at the moment to get around that.

Pretty sure the car still has a big double DIN cubby as on non UK spec cars I believe some lower spec EU Octavia's still come with more traditional head units and not the Audi-esque set up on the touchscreen vehicles.

Retro-fitting Amundsen/Columbus to a car without Nav is tricky because of the component protection; sure in time there will be a way round it but the gear on its own is expensive at the moment being so new.

You'd probably be able to get a double DIN nav unit in there and working (like the dealer fit Kenwood) but not sure if its fully compatible with the MQB electronics; you'd lose control via steering wheel, maxidot output etc etc.

As you probably saw, I had cruise retrofitted. If you're really desperate for satnav, I believe there's been some issues with changing the bolero from what I've read on here. You could go down this route: http://www.axionag.de/products/axion/nik-vwz01-vw-golf-7-navigations-nachruestsatz_en

It looks like it connects between the unit and the bolero screen.

Then you could have connectivity for other inputs too, like reversing camera I think.

Thanks for the link, certainly seems an interesting option, couldn't find out how much it cost though, however probably quite pricey?
