Whining 5th gear vRS

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, my vRS has a whining 5th gear, started a while ago now but hasn't got any worse. Only happens in 5th and only when off the throttle. Does anyone have any idea of what it could be?? Thanks in advance!

Mines been like that for the last 19k, if it dies it dies.  Until then i'm not worried about it. Its sounds the same now as the day it started making the noise.

Thats my approach :)

My leon fr tdi box did this in 4th gear.

Just whined when costing off the gas.

Was like it when i bought the car so god knows how long it had been doing it. I put another 25k on it and the whining didnt get any worse. I believe its a bearing in the gearbox.

More annoying than anything. Will probably last a lifetime yet

Just had a Fabia VRS in workshop for noisy 5 Gear  perticularly bad on over run. noise is caused by bearing moving longditudenaly in housing. We have worked out a method of re shimming the bearing without removing gear box cost sub £100 inc gearbox oil change. car had been noisy for last 15k skoda wanted to fit new box clutch and fly wheel.

my 04 Vrs has been doing exactly the same thing for about 18 months 2 years, I did not think anything about it as I am constantly on motorway and the car is old, I just recently had its clutch and flywheel done and I was told the gearbox is Foo bar, however after ringing around several transmission centres I found one in Leeds I explained the issue and he said bring it to me let me drive it, he knew exactly what it was I was describing and he did  drive it and has told me the repair can be done with box in situ.  He asked me to call my VAG specialist to ask him to call the centre so he could explain what to do, I did this but my guy said its not possible as it has an “internal issue” and refused to call.  The transmission centre has given me a number of someone he can do it and he told me that it’s a bearing ( not which one) in the box that’s moving and they can put a shim on it to stop it whining about £50 repair which is brilliant as cheapest re-build so far is £650.00 and cheapest 2nd hand ( which I don’t want to do ) is £450.00.  Its going in on Tuesday so I will let you know if its worked. I cant se why the transmission centre would lie as he is not making any money from me

Apparently the input shaft bearing is common on these boxes? I think that's what mine was, I got it rebuilt as it was getting on in miles anyway

i dont think mine has  £600  left in it its been a problem from day one :-) i only need another 18 months before I can change car
