Which VRS Mk3 Tyres

Featured Replies

I've just had my first service and been told by the dealer that there is only 2mm left on my front tyres. I've done 9,600 miles. I'm told I can't get the same tread pattern Continentals as they've brought out a new design. I wouldn't mind getting a slightly harder wearing tyre that would last a bit longer.

This is where I need advice. Should I stick with Continentals, change to a different manufacturer with say Bridgestone, Falcons, Pirelli etc?

What advice can you give me?

Thanks in anticipation.

Mines on 9k and tyres are down to 2mm on the front too!!!

My preference is not to mix brands.

The SC2's are ****; every car ive had with them theyve worn badly in only 8/10k. Theyve been superceeded now and are difficult to get hold of. Can highly recommend SC5's. Ran my Blackline on these for a few k before getting rid; better grip, wear and less road noise i found.

I'm all about the Vredsteins. Ultrac Vorti. Sorted.

What has really annoyed me is that I've not hammered the car or cornered hard. I dread to think what the tyre wear would be if I had been a lot harder on the tyres.

Michelin.

I've got 3mm on mine after 9k miles....

I remember having SC2 tyres on a Megane I bought brand new and that was in 2003! I'm surprised they're still on the market to be honest.

I found them ok but they wore at a ridiculous rate and the wet grip seemed to drop off a cliff when the tread was nearing (but not at) the wear lines with what should've been at least a thousand miles or so to go before they needed changing.

I'm not sure what mine will be replaced with when the time comes but as I've got winter tyres too the decision wouldn't have to be made for a while. I did try falken tyres on my x-type as was pretty impressed for the money.

We use michelins at work and although we've started using winters all year round (talk about penny pinching!) they stand up to abuse pretty well. And if the workshops got all the tracking issues sorted they would last a lot longer! It's just a pity michelins cost a fortune compared to pretty much everything else.

My last octy 1.8 did 9000 on the conti's on the front.

This 1.8 came with Dunlop sport 01A's.I had them moved front to back etc. Got 27000 on the now front and the now back ones are getting down to main at 29000. Trying to not change these as waiting for new Vrs. PS. I drive hard, especially the bends.

Yes initial outlay is high, but per mile they're a similar or in some cases lower pence per mile cost when you factor in their longevity

I like continental cause offer good performance wet and dry, however a downside to this is there wearing. Im possibly looking at trying Michelins next. Just my OCD says i cant have fronts being michelin and rear being continental haha.

I reckon ill get about 10-11k out of mine.

I had SC5's on my MkII and they seemed to be a lot longer lasting than SC2's.

The tyre of choice for the MkII's was the the Goodyear Eagle F1 assymetric 2, good grip in wet and dry and decent longevity.

I personally find Michelins don't grip so well in the wet.

My Elegance came with 225/40/R18 Dunlop Sports on it and I can't wait to change them when they wear out as they aren't that good.

I'm thinking of changing to Vredestein all-season tyres as I'm lacking the space to store a set of winters now.

The new tyre should go on the back, so contis will be on the front ;)

Another vote for Goodyear F1 AS2's. Excellent tyre and better wear than conti's.

That would at least put them in alphabetical order...

Id still have a mixture of makes though ???? haha. Unless i use launch control at every traffic light they'll be worn out in no time

I have the CS2's on my VRS TSI and have currently done 3k miles, tyres have barely worn at all on the fronts, perhaps I'm the lucky one!

mix makes front to back is fine, its good to have the same tyre on each axle, left and right side though

Have you ever actually used launch control?

...And a third one, best I've tried on my 18" either on dry or wet surfaces.

Worst was Pirelli Pzero. Can't recall wether Rosso or Nero but they were so awful (no grip, extremely noisy) that I bet colour didn't matter.

I remember I told my tyreman I would never ever mount a Pirelly again.

Tried it loads of times and its only actually ever done its job properly once all other time just a big burnout

Goodyear Efficient Grip, seem to be pretty good.

Unfortunately only experience is on my Partners Fabia vRS MK2.

These are quieter, better grip in all conditions compared to the Conti 2

She is a crazy redhead driver but has got 17000 out of the fronts with a 1mm yet to the warning bumps. So 20000not bad.

Bought them to try after reading tyre test in Autoexpress last year.

Can't see 18" version shouldn't be much different to Octavia vRS MK3.

However, tyre wear is all relative and mainly determined by driving style.

Any better lasting ,if rotate back to front at first service and thereafter? Unfortunately normaly have to shell out for replacing 4 at a time.

My Conti 2 on the Octavia vRS MK3 have covered 6500 and look good for 20000 estimated- I will rotate.

Just switched to SC3's as the 2's were fubar'd at 12.5k.

So far so good. Slightly noisier but grip good in all conditions. And my mpg's improved slightly too.

I've got goodyear efficient grip on the mondeo currently, replaced continental premium contact.  supposedly quieter by rating - my experience is they may be but hard to tell, supposedly grippier - again hard to tell but possibly are, and supposedly more fuel efficeint - i think yes, I reckon I get at least 5% more from a tank of fuel on a motorway run.  comparing by the published figures from one maker to another needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but they are rated as grippier, quieter and more fuel efficient than the eagle f1s, and they are cheaper normally (although camsklill currently have the eagles with a big discount, making them about £3 cheaper than the efficient grip)  the efficient grip are also slightly cheaper than the contis.

I've done nearly 8k miles with them on the mondeo.  wear seems as I'd expect.  I used to get 35k from continental premium contacts and I think the efficient grips may do similar (but its hard to forecast that far clearly...and I hope to be long shot of the car before then)

this is all experience with a very different car to the vrs, but I think I'll try the goodyear efficient grip on that too.
