Favourite Car?

Recommended Posts

Just for fun.

I have owned quite a few cars within my 24 years of driving. I thought that I would list them in order of preference.

1). Impreza WRX STI IV '98 - Awesome engine, awesome traction, awesome sound, practical 4 door body.

2). Impreza Turbo UK '99 - Tamed version of the above car for UK roads. Not quite as much fun or as fast as the STI IV, but much easier to live with.

3). Octy VRS TSI '14 - More practical than any of my other cars and great fun, but lacks the sound, traction, handling and cheesy grin factor of the Subaru's. Good general build quality.

4). Ford Sierra Coswortth 3dr (RWD) '87 -This was an absolute monster of a car at the time, but in hindsight was not that special compared to the above 3.

5). Fiesta XR2 '89 - For some reason I loved this car. It handled like a go-kart and was reasonably nippy.

6). BMW 320D Auto '10 - Well built, great handling and refined. I liked it a lot but never grew attached despite running it for 3 years. The best built car I have owned by far.

7). Fiat Punto 1.9D '03 - Basic car but it only cost £6K new and covered 70K miles in two years without having a single problem. Fuel economy was superb from the clunky non-turbo diesel engine.

8). Ford Cortina 1.6L '80 - My first ever car. It was completely unreliable, slow and crap, but it gave me many fond memories. I had more girlfriends in that car than all of the others combined.

9). Ford Escort XR3i '86 - I was an Essex boy in my young 20's. I had to own an XR3i with all of the add-ons...

10). Megane DCI 130 Estate '08 - Boring car but pretty practical and pretty reliable. My wife still uses it as her runabout.

.

..

...

...

Worst Car) VW Beetle '01. In an absolute moment of madness I sold my Subaru and purchased a New Beetle for my wife. With hindsight I should have just chopped off my manhood instead, it would have been less painful. Lesson learned, never make decisions based upon love and avoid any form of romantic sentiment. I hated this car.

I have also owned a few Mondeo's, a Vectra, another Megane, a VW Polo and maybe one or two others that I forget.

Perhaps post your top 3 or 4?

edit: I just noticed that my list roughly follows performance. There are exceptions, but the top 4 are fastest in terms of acceleration and handling. Perhaps I am just a speed freak.

Top couple for me has to be (in no particular order):

01 X Golf mk4 Gti Turbo - mapped and generally tweaked, kept it for six years in the end.  Fantastic car.

86 D Golf GTI 16v - very heavily modified trackcar, should never have got rid, still miss it now.

06 06 Octavia vRS Petrol - only kept for a year and sold to pay off debt, it's the reason for the vRS now.

14 14 Octavia vRS TDI - fast enough, comfortable enough, etc.

Also along the way a 73 Merc 280E, 86 Cavalier GLSi (first car), 95 Vectra SRi and various Ford Company Cars

Worst, hmm, I'm not sure I've ever had a car i didn't particularly like!!

1) Vauxhall Nova Saloon 1.0L - Bought for £150, Driven illegally, and sold for the value of fuel in the tank due to the huge amounts of welding needed :)

2) Citroen AX 1.0 - Not much better

3) Punto (MK2) 1.2 Active - Awesome car, got written off by a council lorry :(

4) Punto (MK2) 1.2 Active Sport - So good I bought another..... Never let me down and was a billy bargain

5) MG MGF - Japanese re-import that was immaculate with all the toys, and Purple! :D Killed by "enthusiastic driving"

6) Worst Car (See below)

7) Rover 25 - base spec car, that only needed rear pads and an oil change in the entire time I had it..... cheap and cheerful.

8) MG TF - A car I still own, which I love to bits.... remapped, custom interior and makes me smile every summer.... Great community too :)

9) Octy vRS MK3 (Current)

Worst Car - Land Rover Freelander MK1 1.8 Petrol - Bought on impulse at a car auction, the head gasket had already gone and was (badly) covered up after I had bought it...... Thanks to this car I can now change head gaskets and have a OK selection of tools. Hideous interior made from parts out of the rover parts bin. Traded it in when the diff started squealing.

Not had anything really interesting in my years of driving.

Best car....actually probably my current Mk3 2.0 TDi Elegance. It has its flaws but as a comodious, quick, comfortable and efficient mode of transport it really does tick the boxes.....in terms of appeal I still prefer the Blackline I traded in for it but feel it was all show and no go, the drivechain was a real disappointment.

Worst.....definitely my 88 Lancia Y10 1.0 LX closely followed by the 92 Fiat Uno 1.0 5 door.

Biggest regret.....was offered a 91 German import Mk2 big bumper Golf G60 3 door, Red, one owner, full VW history, about 60k KM's, pushing about 210hp care of some mild tuning/Supercharger pulley work and absolutely mint for about £4k by a mate at work 10 years ago....just couldnt afford it at the time.......

Contemplating an E46 M3 as a weekend toy if I can find a half decent one on my v limited budget.

Favourite cars I've owned (top 5).

  1. Got to be my 54 VW Beetle as I still have it and it's gonna be 60 in May
  2. 2003 Noble M12. Fast, handled brilliantly and was docile off the turbos, sounded amazing on  boost, but hell was it expensive to maintain!
  3. 2000 Impreza P1. Nearly totalled it at Silverstone (Trax 2001) when the brakes faded to the point of the fronts not working at all.
  4. VX 220 Turbo.  Unexpectedly good hooning tool.
  5. 2007 Fabia vRS.  How can a small diesel hatch be so much fun?

Classis Saab 900 16b SE turbo

Fast comfey and if they still made them I would be tempted to by another one.

Saab 9-5 Aero

A missile but oh so comfey for long journeys

Bertone / Fiat X19 1500

Rusted like hell. Terrible electrics but what a gear box and what an engine. The valve shims were stamped "Ferrari"

Classic Range Rover Vogue

An old one but with a 3.9 EFi V8 dropped in. Imperious and unstoppable on any road / field / snow or anything really. Mind ypou 15 mpg.

My first car deserves a mention;

1973 Datsun 1200 deluxe coupe. Body work was more iron oxide than steel but it was my first (so was Tina).

Best car: 2007 Fiat Grande Punto (just sold it to get the Octy), so cheap to buy but never failed in 103 k miles.

Favourite car: 1969 Rover P6 mach 1 V8. Just classically designed, built ( and comprehensively re welded)!

Most fun car: 2005 Alfa Romeo 156 sport wagon. Handling and speed with the best looks ever.

Worst car (by far): 1983 Ford Escort 1300 GL. Un reliable, rotted exhausts like nobody's business. Didn't stop. Didn't start well. couldn't cruise at more that 70 without stuttering and pig ugly.

Notable mention to my 1971 VW Beetle 1302s with the long bonnet ( very rare). Cried when I had to sell it and another mention to the 2001 Fiat Punto 1.2 sporting. Not much power but handled like a go kart.

Undoubtedly a 2008 Porsche Boxster S which we purchased new, specced up 100% to our liking and collected the car from the factory in Stuttgartt which made it feel even more special somehow. Unusual to have "Porsche Stuttgart" stamp on PDI page of the service book! A beautiful car we drove all over Europe in it and sold it in a moment of complete stupidity when we took it for its four year service and a salesman managed to convince us to buy a Cayman S. My wife actually cried when she said farewell to it. The Cayman was an absolute disaster, the ride proved far to hard for my wife and we sold it a year later for the 911 we have now. Even the 911, a magnificent car that it is isn't part of the family like that Boxster was.

I think the Octavia vRS come close to the Subaru Impreza on style & performance...

I used to have an Impreza great car but service bills £££££££...!!!

The ST model super quick...

I also had an Astra 2.2 Bertone coupe that was nice...

Best - 1996 Saab 9000 2.0 auto, like driving your favourite armchair in an air conditioned room.

2nd - 2004 Octavia mk1 estate 1.9 tdi ambiente. Just sold it with 190k miles, lack of rear legroom was my only issue with it.

3rd - 1983 XR3i. Was a company car that I just loved driving.

Worst - 1980 Vauxhall Chevette. Let me down so many times, last straw ended with me doing a Basil Fawlty on it, smashing the drivers door window in the process ! When I finally got it started I drove to a scrapyard, pulled in, handed them the keys and just walked off, never looked back and still wary of Vauxhalls ...

I sold my 71 beetle and 'grew up' by buying a 1982 Ford Cortina Ghia auto in 1987. Ford didn't make very good engines in those days but I did a lot of my courting in it ( with my wife to be).

In order:

1) Ford Focus RS mk1, by far the best car I've had I loved the way it handled and how much feedback it gave just inspired confidence. I always regretted selling it.

2) Lotus Elise mk2, great fun but really impractical day to day and always leaked in the rain!

3) Skoda Octavia VRS mk3, geat car probably the best all rounder and well built just not in the same league handling wise.

4) Skoda Octavia VRS mk2, as above really just not as well made or as refined.

5) Seat Leon Cupra R, good fun and surprising comfortable.

6) Range Rover L322, good car but very expensive when anything g went wrong, which it did a lot.

The worst car I had was a Honda Civic type R which I regretted buying from day one, I hated having to rev the nuts off it to get any sort of performance and passengers always felt sick in it. I sold it after only 2 weeks!

Out of my 30+ cars, top 3 has to be:

1) Ford Mondeo ST TDCI, handled beautifully, 300+ lb/ft torque, 40+mpg, enough toys inside and not bad looking outside

2) Current Octavia 150 elegance.  Plenty of toys, looks great outside with sunroof, Golus and sports suspension.

3) Mk5 Escort RS2000, proper old school Ford lunacy.  Bonnet bulges and a fast revving 2.0 engine in a light package.

Worst car (by a long long long long long way).

2.0 Renault Laguna 150 DCI.  truly awful but taught me to never have a French car again.

My one regret was passing on a 2.9 litre 24v Cosworth turbo XR4i.  What a combination that was!
