Best fuel for vrs?

Featured Replies

Whats the forums opinion on the best fuel for the vrs? Is it the v power nitro plus or tesco momentum? Ive mainly always run mine on v power which it seems to run ok. But im tempted to throw a few tanks of t99 in, has anyone noticed a difference between the fuels?

Consensus on here would appear to be Tesco Momentum 99 RON.

Minimum Super unleaded at Min 97/98 RON.

I've run my cars on Shell for the past nine years - I've recently switched to Momentum but think I'll be switching back - I haven't noticed in difference between the two but rightly or wrongly I'm prejudiced against supermarket fuel.

I was prejudiced against supermarket fuels but if the consensus is t99 is better not just for the cost but how the car runs maybe its worth a shot.

Definately momentum. Apparently shell have a habit of filling nitro tank with normal. Not sure on validity of that though, cant remember where I heard it. I get more mpg on the tesco stuff too.

You heard it from me and I van back it up if anyone from shell wants to ask. Or h m r c I can name and shame. Tesco momentum 99 from greenery one of the biggest distributors of road fuel b I o etc. So not some back street oil refinery business. You can read the momentum spec it is all clear to see ethanol content etc

I'm a recent convert to Momentum, I have noticed no difference to V-power other than a cheaper price. So sticking with it. :-)

Use the search function -loads of threads on this, fuel choice has been done to death lol!

Tesco 99 seems he most popular is it runs sweetly on it and it's good value compared to Shell nitro.

Mine has always run great on sainsburys 97 tho and personally can't notice any difference between it and momentum but maybe others do.

Sorry no computer and phone connection bad. G r e e n e r g y. Not better than other 99 octane just consistent minimum 99 Ron and 2.50 a tank less buy near 2 litres more

Thanks guys i give t99 a few tank fulls asTh3grinch posted im very sceptical to whether or im actually get vpower. Depending which pump i go to the car seems to run a little better. Could be old fuel or 95 ron in the wrong tank. I suppose t99 will be fresher in theory due to the volume of cars going through it.

I do like the pay-at-the-pump facility at Tesco - very convenient - however, the last time it refused to give me a receipt so I went in to the shop to ask for one - was scared I'd get done for bilking :p.

I regularly switch between shell and momentum depending whether I'm nearer home or at work when the fuel light comes on.

I'm quite concerned to hear about this wrong fuel being used in the pumps at shell.

I've run my vRS for two and a half years on Shell - I'm sure I'd have noticed if they were flogging me 95 in the guise of Ultimate / Nitro / whatever they're calling it this week. Prior to that I ran a MKI Fabia vRS (diesel version of Ultimate) and a Lupo GTi (although a normally aspirated engine it was designed to run on the higher octane juice) on it. Never had an issue.

I was in a shell garage the other day and they were only selling Nitro as they had accidentally filled the reg95 tank with Nitro99.... Annoyed customers were turning away. You'd have thought they would let people have the Nitro at reg95 price as a goodwill gesture for their error and resulting inconvenience but no!

A '99 only' filling station sounds a good idea to me - less pump confusion ;) .

Did this happen by accident on one occasion or is it just an urban myth?

Defo an only 99 station would do the job.

Well ive brimmed it with t99 so ill give verdict after a few tank fulls.

I would use Momentum 99 if I didn't work for a direct Tesco competitor. Not sure accounts would appreciate me buying thousands of £ of fuel from a competitor. I use Shell V Power exclusively - there are weeks occasionally where I see a dip in MPG that is roughly what I get on 95ron, but there's too many variables to start pointing fingers.

I would never have bought supermarket fuel previously. ESSO is always cheapest in this area, always on par or cheaper than Asda so I've always gone there. But since owning a vRS, Momentum 99 all the way. Used shell once, no difference other than price. Would settle with 97 if needbe.

No it not an urban myth on wrong octane in tanks. But it is not common that would be fraud. We pay tax and duty. They sell a product. When I know it happened was during fuel shortage ans one owner that has to keep fuel for essential users sold only v power to use. Then used another supply of fuel and profiteers. He was reported. And then you get mix ups. So on occasion any place can make a mistake. If you have a car mapped to 98\99 you van notice. An engine to 98\(95) unlikely. Unless using pretty sporting.

An interesting discussion.

I have been running some tests over the past few weeks as I have had lots of motorway runs that gave me the opportunity to get some consistent long distance runs on cruise control trips of around 200-300 miles with the cruise set at 79mph. Obviously, you cannot be on cruise all the time but over the full journey it generally levels out.

Overall, there appears to be no difference between V-Power and Momentum 99 in terms of MPG, but the car will show a slight dip in mpg if running normal 95 octane - around 1.5 to 2 mpg.

I do feel that the engine responds a little better when using the 99 octane fuel, but it could well be just a perception.

Is it worth the extra for V-Power? Probably not, except the I think they have extra additives that help keep the fuel system cleaner that regular fuel. So perhaps 1 tank in 5 will help keep the fuel systems clean.

Is it worth sticking to a 99 octane fuel? Personally, I think so. Todays engine management systems can get the best spark they can from whatever fuel is used, so they will get a slightly better bang form the higher octane.

In terms of running costs? In reality, there is so little in it that it comes down to personal choice. I'll stick to the 99 octane fuels and slap some V-Power in when my employers are funding the trip.

Cheers

I run my vRS on shell v power nitro +. I used to use momentum 99 on my r32 until one day when I was low I fueled up at shell with there v power +.. Needless to say I haven't been back to Tesco since, I noticed the difference immediately as I was used to using momentum, the car felt more responsive and less hesitant. I also like there card point system you can save quite a bit in petrol.

The Shell points system is good, but it doesn't get near reducing the overall cost of V-Power to Momentum levels.

BTW, in Germany V-Power is 100 octane. Perhaps that is the case in other Euro countries?

I'm of the belief that Momentum is the way to go due to the octane rating and cheaper price.  Tesco also do a good deal at the moment where if you spend over £50 on groceries you get 2p per litre off up to a maximum of 20p per litre.  On my first purchase of momentum I got 8p per litre off.  I've already accumulated another 3p off with just one £75 weekly shop.
