Best fuel for vrs?

Featured Replies

Shell changed there v power to nitro + late last year if I remember right.. Which is now also 99 octane

Tesco apparently add an engine cleaning adhesive into there momentum 99 formulae which puts me off to be honest.. I'm staying with shell because it worked better for me

I remember their old advert - 'You can be sure of Shell!' - I've no complaints about Momentum but I'm moving back to Shell as I feel more comfortable with it plus the two Shell stations near me are more convenient than Tesco - my annual mileage is sub 5,000 so cost doesn't come into it.

Engine cleaning additives do go in fuels, read the spec of Tesco momentum it is on the spec sheet you will find that hard to find. But detergents are usually sodium (salt) just as royal Dutch sells detergents are. Full synthetic oil and a hot engine with good fuel. What do you want detergents in for?

That was not hard to find for Tesco or redo etc. Hard to find for shell.

When min 98 RON is recommended and it costs £2.25 extra for a FULL tank of 45L (based on 5p per litre more) and returns slightly better fuel economy it seems a no brainer to me to use Momentum 99. However it seems crazy to fall for Shell's marketing campaign and pay another 5p+ per litre than Momentum to pay for their Ferrari sponsorship just to get the same RON grade of petrol.

Good point.

But being a die-hard Ferrari F1 fan I don't mind paying that premium.

Anything to get their slow arses up the grid!!!!!

I have tried a tank of v Power Nitro and I recon the engine runs a bit smoother.  However I shall return to Momentum when the time comes.

I'm glad I'm not the only one then - thought it was just in my head - I'm going back to Shell.

I've just chucked a tank of standard 95 Esso in this evening as I'm going to be doing a tank for work tomorrow. Didn't have a chance to get to anywhere selling premium stuff. After using 99RON I'm sure there will be a difference but will get straight back to the 99 ASAP.

Do you guys ever use standard 95 every now and then? Any thoughts on it?

The car runs on 95 ron, because all cars need to now for EU Type Approval.

But over time you might notice it a bit rough on cold starts, and thats about it.

I would not go booting it long and hard on less than 98 ron, but many say they do on 95 or 97 ron and notice no difference.

Fuels are to meet a Minimum 95, or Super Unleaded 97 ron in the UK, or 99 etc as shown on the Pump.

Some can be better than others, and sometimes exceed the Minimum.

Sainsbury Super Unleaded 97 ron Minimum is a good price.

I will never use it again, i used 2 tanks full and was pleased to get back filled up with 99 ron Momentum.

I can see no reason 99 ron Shell should have a Twincharger Smoother than 99 Momentum,

but if anyone feels it is, it is maybe worth the extra per tank to use it.

To summarise:

  • EU regulations stipulate that ALL cars must be capable of running on 95 RON
  • They MAY have problems on cold starts with 95 RON which should not be used if you plan to "boot it long and hard"
  • Not all fuels are created equal
  • Sainsburys Super Unleaded 97 is cheap but rubbish (allegedly)
  • Shell 99 RON is also allegedly rubbish and may even not be 97 RON at all
  • Tesco Momentum99 Super Unleaded is absolutely WONDERFUL!

Make of this what you will; personally I would need a wee bit more evidence; however I do happen to have a local Tesco Superstore ;)

ps - Skoda UK and their dealers are thoroughly evil, the 1.4 TSI engine uses more oil than petrol and is prone to falling apart, the vRS is crashy and noisy but despite all of this it is a quite wonderful car - go figure????

Have you bought your vRS yet mate?

Tesco Momentum is pretty wonderful for the price @ 99 ron minimum.

The only evidence is use it, and if you prefer use Shell V Power Nitro for 5 pence a litre more.

Or in the UK buy 102 RON for near double the Price,.

vxh26,

i take it you have now decided a vRS is not for you,   what are you going for now?

'

Not sure about your summary, or why 'cheap but rubbish (allegedly); is in there,

i was speaking about its use in a vRS.

Sainsbury Super Unleaded' is 97 RON Minimum, good enough if you want 97 ron petrol.

The Recommended fuel for the vRS is 98 RON, which is good, 99 ron might be better.

It is IMO. and only a few pence of difference between the 97, or the 99, and costs me the same.

Clubcard Plus, & Santander 123 used at Tesco

(97 RON is not 98 RON, which is what is the recommended Fuel.)

Seems simple enough really.

I averaged 47.9mpg today over 190 miles mostly cruising at 65-70mph, very impressed running on 95 with a quarter of 99 leftover before fill up, possibly 96 when combined... Performance drop is evident though after using 99 for the last few months. Going to get straight back on it.

What does the jury think of Esso Energy Supreme Unleaded (97 RON)?

It should perform like all other 97 ron fuels.

But It is not 98 ron as VW Recommend for the 1.4tsi 132-136kW,

I am a die hard Shell fan here in our 2 cars. Never had an issue with the mark 1 1.9TDi PD engine Fabia in 12 years I had it. Ran very smoothly for a diesel. Always use Nitro + in the Octavia and the Citigo Sport now. OK makes no difference in the Citigo but makes me feel good. Cost difference is minimal.

There are 2 big reasons I use Shell over anything else. One is that I believe the hype that it helps keep the engine clean, some will argue that it won't help on the direct injection engine, ie back of inlet valves will still get carboned up and secondly, I can always fill up straight away in my local Shell whereas the supermarket nearly always has a big queue. Any savings I have probably partly burned in waiting.
