Had a vRS test drive today - a few questions?

Featured Replies

I took out a petrol vRS hatch today - and have a few questions which I hoped some of you with ownership experience could answer.

• First is to do with a weird resonance/boom in the cabin at slow speeds. This was quite uncomfortable and made my ears hurt and my head ache. I've found one thread on here about it, which seems to suggest there's no known cause or cure. Anyone know yet if Skoda or anyone worked out what it is or if it can be avoided?

• Anyone know if this boom happens only in the hatch, or the estate as well? (It's the estate that I'd be after.)

• Wheels - our demo unfortunately had the 19-inch wheels and I found the ride slightly too crashy. I'm hoping the standard rims will give a slightly better ride, but wondered if anyone here has experienced both and is able to comment on the actual difference between rims?

Thanks for any insight / info / advice!

I have an estate and no boom. 18 inch wheels and ride is firm but well balanced in terms of comfort in my opinion

OK thanks Tony. Chap on the other thread says he has the boom in his estate ... it's a weird one. More bothered by that (and all the rattles the demo seemed to have) than the ride, to be honest (which is, like you say, firm but fair).

I have the estate on 18" wheels I don't have the boom that a lot of people have, must be lucky for a change.

I have a petrol vRS estate, and I get the 'resonance' too. Low speed and on certain road surfaces. Weirdly, my wife can't hear it! I think it has something to do with tyres and my sonic sensitivity with certain frequencies.

I get some boom resonance in my TDI hatchback when doing circa 30mph on some road surfaces too.

No boom in my estate and the ride is great on 18s. :)

Is there any link between this and having a spare wheel or foam kit?

Not a vRS but have a spare wheel in my 2.0 Elegance estate and no boom whatsoever.

I have a vrs tdi estate with the spare wheel kit and have never noticed any boom.

I've had my Vrs petrol saloon for 2 weeks now and think its the best version so far and I've had all four models (all petrol). The mk3 is so smooth and quiet in respects to road noise. I have no Boom noise only the engine noise change in different driving modes.

I've got 18" so can't comment on the ride with 19s.

The car is quick, smooth, quiet and makes you smile.

And I have a spare wheel, but then for £75 you'd be daft not too.

Agreed

Me too and lovin' it still...

I have a Vrs petrol hatch on 18's and agree with others that the ride is a good balance between sport and comfort, would have to agree though that adding 19's would make it seem a bit more crashy,...

As for the boom, I'm still waiting for someone to post a sound recording of this as can't say I noticed. Anything other than the usual road noise which is actually quite well suppressed on the octy.

Telboy, the ‘boom' I had isn't a noise you can record and play back as such. It's more a pressure on the eardrums, like you sometimes get when driving with a back window or sunroof open. Something sonic, a weird harmonic that's set up and amplified through the cabin somehow.

+1 for this set up and no boom

vRS TDI, estate, spare wheel and variable boot floor. Not noticed any boom.

Tyres (Bridgestone Potenzas) can be noisy on some surfaces though.

I can't seem to notice front assistant and electric boot when using Skoda car configurator (that's for Hatch vRs TSI one).

Does anyone know if they are still available with this model?

Front assist has been taken off the options list and electric boot is only for the combi.

So no front assist available at all now for vRs?

No, not on any octavia, atleast in the UK.

I have no boom on my Hatch Tdi.. Never notice any...

I have 18' rims..

No, not on any octavia, atleast in the UK.

Wow! Picked up my vRS last week and it came with FA and ACC - both essential parts of the overall package imho.

Thanks for the info..

Ridiculous decision by Skoda UK imho, it should be at least an option. Looks like essential safety device and would be first on the list of added options for me.
