Funny the subject of police traffic stops comes up, I've not had a stop for ages, then all a sudden, 3 stops in The same week.. Something fishy going on. Admittedly i do drive quite late at night a lot when there's not another soul out.

Most of my driving now is done when it's dark. I can only assume that because of recent incidents the local plod are more keen. Before this year I'd never been pulled once and like many I did stupid things when I was young too so I'm not pretending that I'm holier than thou like some. But at the time I wasn't speeding. I caught up because my lines were better and I held 60mph.

On the way home last night I did exactly the same thing and still found myself catching cars up. That's hardly my fault.

Don't talk nonsense. The vast majority of them are perfectly reasonable people doing a difficult job with far better things to do with their time than pick on people for no reason.

Very true, and some of them are arseholes.

Just like every other section of society.

My ex-plod mate (a petrolhead) when asked by my Mrs if he'd be going for traffic said, "everyone hates the traffic police, even the rest of the police, they're all cocky arrogant arses".

That might explain some people's experiences of getting pulled over.

I can't cite since the relevant conversations were all meatspace, but I've had similar conversations with serving and former ossifers regarding Traffic Division.

{Meanwhile, back at the OP's point}

I've driven some cars with very capable chassis, and done the "hold speed and catch (or lose if they were following me) a base model" thing a few times. No-one has ever suggested that my ability to hold speed directly equates to any form of unsafe driving.

Yes, which is a completely different situation to "they were all bullied at school and are on a power trip".

And this is what I don't get. It's almost as if they have the mentality that since they are olice that they should never be caught

Also reference police car handling surely they have to be pretty bad, judging by all the half tone of health and safety gear they fill them with. Stock suspension with that much weight and no holding back on the speed bump must ruin was little ability it would have had.

Exchange all with most

No mention of all :)

So on a road with a speed limit, the police is saying that you can't do the speed limit on a bend?

Don't believe that Martyn has mentioned speeding once?

I got pulled the other week for doing a very fast overtake late at night on a road i commute on twice a day.  My suspicion was aroused when the car behind did the same overtake.  People rarely overtake nowadays (that's a thread for another day....tractor with 15 cars in convoy...) even when its perfectly safe to do so.  I was followed for 6miles and then the blues came on (unmarked volvo).  Pulled me over and he was the typical traffic cop with his attitude starting off, not with my speed but with my perfectly legal dubmeister pressed plates.  I didn't bother arguing with him as they are always right.  Then asked for proof of ownership of the car as he went on to say the plates were probably fake.  I said apart from the tax disc and photos on my phone what do you expect me to carry?  The invoice?

He went round, looked at the tax disc, then saw my IAM sticker.  Attitude totally changed in an instant from me being the scum of the earth to chatting to me like i was talking to someone at a car show about my car and proceeded to say its a high performance car and its clear I can drive it properly but just slow it down...  It was literally like a switch had been flicked in his head.

If a road is 60 and you can do 60 on a bend in your car then you can perfectly legally do 60. Simple as that.

The 3rd time yes, as he was a traffic officer. The first 2 times were local officers in non anpr equiped cars who just felt i shouldnt driving that car.

So you know if they checked your car prior to stopping you........ ?

Sorry to be a nuisance but the thread you posted about getting stopped seemed a bit different to the post you put in here.

Jeez, the first two times i were stopped the officers were just normal bobbys in a hyundai car and a vauxhall van. Literally saw me at 6.15am both times and pulled me, both were helmets with bad attitudes.

3rd time i was pulled it was a traffic officer in a bmw estate going in the other direction, who spun round after me about 10seconds after passing me, pulled me up about 1/2 mile checked my credentials and told me he has stopped me because of a marker on the vehicle, something to do with a banned driver or non licence holder, cant remember now but it was an old marker from a scotish force (my car spent its first 9years in scotland) this guy was alright and was ok to deal with. I dont think ive actually passed any police on my way home from work at 6am for sometime so i havent been pulled.

I took a sharp corner the other day abit to sharp right in front of a TAU van filled with officers and they just smiled and waved(literally)

My point was I don't think it was necessary to have ANPR to know there's an information report on a car. Tools or not it could have affected why you were pulled over in the first place.

I doubt it. Both times i was pulled over within 10 seconds of them seeing me. That doesnt leave much time to check much

Doubt and knowing are two very different things....

Wheres this heading exactly?

I don't really believe in coincidence is all, just seemed too much of one that you got picked up twice and then the third the information you required surfaced. Just my opinion is all. As stated it doesn't forgive them for being tosspots about anything.

I've only ever been stopped by the police twice - both times in a Ford Capri.  The first was an orange 3.0s with full X-Pack.  The second was in a 2.8i.  On both occasions the officers were reasonable chaps who asked the usual questions and then proceeded to talk about the cars.  It turned out that on the second occasion the officer was thinking of buying a Capri and had followed me six miles in his T5 to ask me about the car.

I didn't get any attitude and wasn't traumatised by the experience.  I guess it's down to luck as to who pulls you over and the circumstances as to why.

Martyn - haven't spotted the question so far, so I'll ask - traffic officer? Marked car?

Often the experience (and possibly the associated frustrations) depend on the person dealing with you.

The last time I got stopped was around 6 years ago, a traffic car was driving past as I was leaving work 6 hours after closing time.  I went the opposite way and when I saw him do a U turn in my rear view mirror I knew that a stop wouldn't be too far off.  A mile later he pulled me over into a bus stop.

I was asked the usual questions, name, address and why do I think that I was pulled over.  It was quite obvious to me that he already knew the answers.  He was polite and extremely professional and took my word for it that I hadn't been drinking when I was asked.  It only took 5 minutes, his departing remark was, nice car, goodnight.

The fact that you were carrying more speed through the corners than the vast majority of other road users made you stand out and justifies the pull.

Life's too short, slow down a little, keep your head down and enjoy the scenery.

Or keep more of an eye out for the reflective people/cars ;)
