Vintage Motoring - MG Montego Turbo

Featured Replies

Haha, reminds me of some who said you could overtake by pulling out with torque steer, and pull in with lifting off - without moving the steering wheel :D

The good old days before the computers took over.  I remember pulling up at traffic lights in many a brand new Montego, with smoke wisping out from under the bonnet as the delivery wax burnt off and later on encountering brake fade in a manic bid to to slow down for a roundabout.

I remember going on holiday, on my return a colleague was telling about a Montego Turbo that he had used on test whilst I was away. He said it was a great car, excellent handling, very quick and roomy. The downside? It came with 3k on the clock, and left a week later with 4k on the clock, on a trailer, 1,000 miles on a Traffic Section and the engine was comprehensively fubared.

The process is must nicer for hand over. Delivered to your door etc all set around the customer, welcome crap as well. Not like my experience of ordering a new Skoda waiting 6 months to then be brought into a untidy office in dealers and expected to pay the full balance before even seeing car........

In case this video has sired up enough interest in someone wanting to buy a Montego Turbo, there is only 1 listed for sale on Ebay at the moment, so you might have to fight over it.

Clarkson described what your old car looked like.

I'm sure my mother fancied Ian Ogillvy lol

Mind he better looking than most women

I recall a mate mentioning the Montego Turbo. As he put it, lift off the throttle (e.g. roundabout) and it leapt forwards. Still boosting or failing to dump boost whilst still fuelling through the carb. Possibly explains a few things about the brakes and breakages.

Remember my Dad having 2 of those - both were stolen!

Oh yes, THE TVR, the TVR that had me teetering on the  brink of a final written warning.....................  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/312701-tvr-v-munny/

British Leyland's finest  :giggle:

A colleague at work had a Montego Turbo (many years ago,of course). He actually really liked it, apart from the fuel economy; he said you could quite literally watch the fuel gauge going down!

I remember my parents had a meastro turbo and a Montego turbo.

Im sure the montego had some kind of onboard computer that always got stuff wrong.

That was amazing! I love the optimism of the 1980s and the fact that it would only be bought by a man of course!! Brilliant.

I want one now. Shows how heavy cars have got, my vRS had similar performance but 200bhp.

Also, my 2000 Land Rover had the same mirror adjustment button!!

The early MG Maestros are famed for having digital, talking dashboards that pretty comprehensively never worked.

My mg maestro used to do it, could drown it out with the sound of twin 40 carbs.
