Checks when picking up your new car

Featured Replies

Hi all,

After a wait of 5 months i'm finally picking up my Octavia VRS estate next week.

It's the 2nd car I've purchased from new but I pretty much just jumped in the 1st one and drove away without really checking it at all! Luckily enough there was no problems but i want to be a bit more careful this time. Apart from a good visual inspection what else should i be looking for?

Anyone had any problems with the new Mk3 which I should be looking out for and get them nipped in the bud at the dealers?

Thanks

Good for you and best of luck with the new car...

But do go over the car with a fine tooth comb inside and out and check everything is working, I even check oil level etc, you could also bring a friend and have them look it over too, extra pair of eyes helps...

Check coolant level, they've be know to be delivered below minimum level.

Check the equipment and the optional too...that they exist and that they works. Mine have the 4 electric windows but without the comfort function even if the car is an Elegance. This I have to solve it on warranty.

Personally check everything. I am not very picky (compared to some stuff I read on here !), but collecting mine I noticed rear number plate wasn't straight, and the drivers door window seal wasn't fitted properly as soon as I walked up to it. First time I used the screen washer it washed the underside of the bonnet lip and hardly any water went on the screen...

The problem is that a valeter on minimum wage and a trainee 17 year old technician will be heavily involved in the prep and pdi of your £20k+ new car.

Good advice above. Crawl all over it and if you can't find anything wrong you aren't looking hard enough!

Many Briskodians would offer to accompany you if asked. Its a sport!

Delivery faults on my Elegance at handover from the UKs largest Skoda dealer(!)

No SD card so Sat Nav no worky

No rubber mats (but ordered)

I did not tick to state that all functions had been explained as hand over staff could not answer my questions.

First drive and at home checks found:

All tyres at incorrect pressures

Tracking off as drifted to left and steering wheel not on straight

Battery had not been charged and was low

I had to chase up my tax disk today as I am at day 13 but still no disk  - FYI steelers can no longer obtain tax disks so you may drive away with an explanation letter valid for 14 days

Some buyers report that 1 litre of oil should be included but as I had specified this I had my bottle of Edge.

Check any options you have paid for too.

Good luck!

Issues with my car, not all strictly pdi related but all worth checking...

Tyres over inflated at 3.2 bar instead of 32 PSI

Blue plastic cover on rear interior courtesy light and a dead Czech fly in the same light fitting!

Steering wheel slightly off centre when driving on straight road, not corrected foc so living with it as I did not complain until too many miles on clock! No sign of uneven tyre wear after 19k so assume just steering wheel not fitted straight.

Clear plastic covers left on wheel hub badges.

Front doors hold water after rain/washing, especially when parked on my sloping drive, dealer tried to fix at first service but not successful.

Loose heating hose behind steering column, caused quite major rattle/vibration through steering at 30mph in 4th gear, sorted by dealer.

Various trim rattles, eg. A pillar/junction with roof lining in cold weather, front door cards not tight fitting causing rattle against door frame, instrument binnacle in cold weather, diy fixes found for the latter two niggles.

Standard rear suspension much firmer than SWMBOs MkII, quite unsettled on rough surfaces but not affected by booming that others have reported.

Despite the above, still very happy with my car after 19k and 11 months of ownership, came from a Superb II lease car back into private ownership and despite missing the bomb proof build quality of the Superb, the Octy III moves on the whole Infotainment experience to the next level, great car for the money.

Do your own checks BEFORE signing anything. Take a big torch and check everything. Check the fluid levels and for any sign of leaks. Check all options are correct and that any settings you requested have been configured. Check under all carpets for water ingress. Check all the dash lights come on with the ignition. If in doubt ask.
