Maybe speak to your local CAB office. But go armed with all this evidence

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S5 using TapaTalk

I think that's a good idea. If this was America, it would be sorted by now haha.

Mine was getting like amk2vr6's sills. Maybe not quite that bad but not far off.

I've move the car on, the rusty sills were a bit part of that decision.

You sold it?

Traded in last week.

Now for sale in dundee - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/319106-my-vrs-for-sale-in-dundee/

Says 'Excellent bodywork', don't think they've spotted the rust.

Was a shame because other than that I'd looked after it and it had lasted the miles very well. Engine was just getting better and cleaner every MOT.

Been reading through this and is the general agreement that the rusting is caused by poor paint protection from factory or they are rusting from the inside out.  If its inside out then everyone should be worried and by the time it appears yours sills are goosed Im afraid.

If its poor paint protection Id just get paint taken back, treated with de-ox gel then some stone guard and paint to get it back to good condition.  To me thats a better situation to be in than corroding from inside.

Its definitely from the outside. Looks to be from stonechips that have broken the thin paint and gotten worse. I'd suspect cars with front mudflaps won't have this issue? Then again I'm talking about the outer half of the sills that is showing on mine, not the lip underneath where you place a jack.

Have been looking at Bilt Hamber stuff too, and it looks top notch! :)

Mine and several others do have mud guards fitted. So it's not related to that.

It does seem to be going the way of poor paint protection from factory; paint too thin or weak and lack of chip protection fitted.

Getting Skoda to admit they did something 'wrong' in the factory with the Mk2 pre-FL is not going to happen without significant time and legal representation.

All I got from them was 'so we can learn from it for future vehicles'. Well, guess what? The FL had proper sill protection...

I'm still hoping to get the report from Skoda if I can.

Get some Por15 sealant on them, I've used it in the bottom of my older cars and it's brilliant stuff. You get clear version as well.

I've just bought a car and it has this with the front mudguards fitted. 55 plate with 58k miles. I negotiated £500 off to cover the costs if fixing it properly.

It would be interesting to see if main dealer would pay any towards this as a claim but very much doubt it.

I spoke to a bodyshop about this and they reckoned £400 to strip the sills back and repaint with the stone protection higher up. So getting a £500 discount to cover that looks like a decent deal.

I thought about £400 so just offered them £500 less than they were asking.  Im going to get them done then put some 3m chip film along them as well.

My best quite was £670 from the authorised repairer. Better than the independent body shop down the road...

Might be worth me driving to wherever you are with those prices!

Probably just cheaper in the frozen north, cars cost more so swings and round abouts

This is where I'm currently at with Skoda UK over my tail gate and sill issue, the conversation is between Griffin Mill Pontypridd and Motorvation Bodywork in Bridgend:

Dealer,

I’ve finally had authorisation ref the above repair.

Skoda have authorised the repair and painting of the tailgate but will not pay for the removal or repairing and painting the spoiler. This is because it was an optional extra when built and does not come under the corrosion warranty.

They have also stated that they will not pay to remove / replace the Skoda badge because it is not the original.

Regarding the sills. They will only pay for the offside sill to be repaired and painted because the nearside shows signs of damage.

Please also understand that the Skoda warranty system will not pay based on the estimate. They use a coding system for each operation. My best estimate is that we can claim approximately £75 labour for the tailgate repair and paint and £63 labour for the sill repair and paint. Paint and materials are also coded. I cant tell you the exact amount at this stage but it should cover the amount you use.

Can you please book the customer and when the job is complete let me know. At that point I’ll process the4 claim and when Skoda eventually pay us we can pay you.

Motorvation,

I have spoken to Skoda Paint and Body and have now amended estimate to what will be authorised by them. To proceed with this please supply us an order number for the estimated amount and we would need to be paid within 30 days. If we are unable to agree to these term then unfortunately we would not be happy to take on the work which would be a shame with all the time and effort that has gone into this and a let down to the customer who came into us a month ago.

Please let me know if we can go forward with this

Kind Regards

Tonight the bodywork chap rang me to explain everything and 'cc' me in on the conversation, he also explained that for them to do the rear spoiler it will cost me £143 and the passenger sill £300!!! There's not a chance in hell I'm paying jack towards this work, look out Griffin Mill expect a visit in the morning to get this sorted, Skoda UK are not getting away that lightly.

Time to involve trading standards or float a mention of small claims court action?

I've just applied Hammerite Stone Chip Shield to my 06 Octy's sills.

Took it right up to the vertical bend on the sills and because it's black on black magic it really doesn't need overspraying.

I found my Skoda bodywork to be thin metal with a thin coating of paint, definitely not something that's aging well, stone chips etc, probably the second worst to Ford for rusting that I have seen and if it makes it to 10+ years old will be a candidate for wrapping...

I got my car yesterday and removed the sill covers, the edge of these have started to wear into the paint as well so Im not replacing these and its worth keeping an eye out.  Im getting stone chip right up to the upper swage line on the sill.  The guy doing it says he has seen quite a few Skoda's with this as the stone chip protection is rubbish.  Its a poor factory problem.

Could you explain a bit more about the sill covers wearing in to the paint? Do you mean the plastic covers on top of the sill which stops peoples feet from scuffing the paint when getting in and out of the car?

Yes.  Before removing there wasnt any sign of damage but its like the edges have cut into the paint and it was starting to bubble.  The rears dont have any.

That is identical to mine - '54 reg 132,000 miles (Sahara Beige though).

Dave

That is also identical to my old 06 reg 92,600 miles and Sahara Beige, now traded in.  (Somehow lost the picture )

I've also noticed a small bubble appear on the lower half of where the rear door seal meets the body.

In fact most of the lower edge on both sides have gone through to primer showing just how thin the paint really is.

It also shows how little attention is paid to the overall condition of the vehicle by the dealer during a service.

My car has had a minor line in the door shuts (which I now know is caused by the door seals) for a couple of years and has been through at least two services at the same dealer without any comment from them.

What's the point in entrusting your car to someone for a service and asking for feedback on the condition of the vehicle if they don't spot stuff like this and then refuse to take some responsibility for it.

@ KBPhoto

To be fair, you're not paying premium Bentley prices and it is a cosmetic issue to begin with and you have eyes.

All correct.

But when specifically asked (prior to handing them the keys for a service) for feedback on the condition of the vehicle as well as the mechanical report, you would have expected more than "It's in good condition".

I also contacted the dealer within 4 months of me spotting the first sign of a small rust spot on one side. At which point there was no evidence of stone chips or bubbling (how I wish I had taken pictures at that point to prove it).

Within that 4 month period the rust grew rapidly on both sides.
