New car guilt

Featured Replies

Just got a new Superb estate, and feeling guilty.

Thought I was suppose to enjoy this experience, but alas, not so far.

Never had a car so expensive as this, and true to form and just as I was dreading would happen, the very first customer of mine to spot it today just had to launch into a short burst of insults regarding me obviously having far too much money.

Ahh well, only another couple of hundred or so  likely; to see it and bombard me with more so called 'banter'.

Almost wishing I hadn't bothered now.

Need to grow a thick skin and rapido I feel, before I lose my patience and rag with the possibility of then losing customers.

My tolerance levels towards this nonsense  are getting lower as i get older unfortunately

Anyone else suffered from this, and if so, how do you /did you respond?

  • I'd say "Nah; it's a Skoda. I need to charge you more". Self deprecation is king as a Skoda owner.

  • I'm 17 my first car was a Fabia! All my mates were making Skoda jokes until they realised just how good it was. The jokes didn't bother me particularly as I knew I was saving a lot of money by driving

  • Seriously though, why are you bothered? As I get older (I'm 33!) I care less and less what people think. You obviously work for your money - so it's your choice how you spend it surely?

Dunno. Just the way I am I guess. Can't help the way I feel unfortunately.

It annoys me intensely, and i annoy myself for getting steamed up about it too.  :wall:

I need you's lot to suggest things I should say in response when I get all the jibes, the most common one of which is no doubt going to be......"oh, I see. This is why your invoices are so high."

The Skoda jokes are long since gone.

Ironically I has my very first adverse Skoda comment just two weeks ago and just before the Fabia went.

I used to be (and still am to a smaller degree) a bit like that (bothered about others opinion). But it's so draining. P.s. I do feel it's a choice to let it bother you - but that's a far longer discussion.

(Do you offer value in your work? Do you feel guilty about the new car?)

Ultimately folk are always gonna have an opinion. The most powerful thing you can say is nothing probably. I would smile or say I'm not charging you enough - because it's 'only' a Skoda...

I actually use my car as a reflection of how well I'm doing and do not regard it in any negative way whatsoever. I should think you need to take a leaf out of my book.

Me too. I have a y reg Green estate. Ha ha.

That's an interesting point though.

There's a sweet spot in client perception/car ownership. I think my y reg fabia says I'm not successful enough for you to consider me as good as I actually am. Whereas a brand new expensive car would say I'm probably taking advantage of you. I think any new/recent Skoda can neatly sit in that sweet spot.

Luv it!  :D

What you do with your money is your choice. You work for it, and you spend it how you like.

People tend to get jealous. Whether you drive a skoda or a bentley, theres always gonna be someone that pops a smart comment.

My mates bought a GTR recently, and one of the neighbours (which never normally speaks) said "how much is that a month then?" And hes had someone else ask if daddy bought it.

Its frustrating that you work so hard to buy the things you want, and people seem to be so narrow minded about it

Thats life though i guess.

Congrats on the purchase. And Enjoy the car. Thats the main the thing :)

Tell them if you were charging them too much you'd be driving an Audi/Mercedes/Jaguar/fill in your own choice......

Luv it! :D

Ha ha.

Personal plate with 02 see how many that perplexes!

Too right.

My dad used to be pretty high up in a very big well known business and could have whatever company car he wanted.

He mostly had vw's and fords though. The nicest was a well specced golf sportline. He always used to say "could you imagine me turning up in a big fancy merc? The first thing the customer will think is that im making far too much money and am going to rip them off"

Hopefully things will pick up soon and you can get the Mk3 Octy vRS :P  :giggle:

So true. It ain't about them.

I had some hoody throw the 'daddy bought it?' comment at me once. He wasn't expecting the response he got (I look quite square - but that really pushed my buttons! ?!)

Yeah - exactly! Agree totally.

Tell them you chose the Skoda Superb Estate over the Audi A6 Avant so that you didn't have to put up your prices as much this year!

Its a shame thats how people think.

Personally. I dont think you can tell at all how much money somebody has by the car they drive.

I know a millionaire that drives an 07 plate passat and another that owns a 20 year old volvo estate.

I also know someone that doesnt have anywhere near as much money that pays finance on a £20k mini cooper, and lots of other people that do similar things.

I had business dealings with one a couple  years ago too.

Drove a 2.0 Y reg Passat.

Yup.

Its the same with houses too i guess.

You never know if somebodys nice house is mortgaged up like mad, or if somebody elses slightly smaller house was a cash buy with no mortgage.

id have to see their bank balance to really be impressed ;) haha.

I joke (:

You see, it's all a bit alien to me this.

Been used to driving sub £10k vehicles generally for the past 20 years in business.

I actually hid the new car in the far corner of the compound at one of the main stealers I had to visit today just so hopefully  no one would see it.

Crazy. :o .

Got to address this farcical behaviour of mine or working life is going to become extremely strained in the coming weeks and months. :wall:

Hahaa really?

Be proud of it, its a nice car :). Stuff what everybody else thinks :).

Unless your going to buy your other half a new car. Then dont turn up in your brand spanking new car haha.

Your car you've worked hard to pay for it! They're just trying to justify their own actions to themselves using your car as a base. It's your car so do what you want with it and ignore their views
