New car guilt

Featured Replies

No not really, I use my white van most of the time and funnily enough

people expect you to be an arse in one of those so they tend to sit back

and let you do whatever you want. You are right about one thing though,

I can afford to wait ;) .

My mum drives a fiat ducato van - I think a lot of people are amazed to see a 5'0" woman stepping down from such a big van. She has the same experience as you, people making way for a 'White van driver' and getting out of the way!

Good for you ;) I'll continue my practice :P

  • I'd say "Nah; it's a Skoda. I need to charge you more". Self deprecation is king as a Skoda owner.

  • I'm 17 my first car was a Fabia! All my mates were making Skoda jokes until they realised just how good it was. The jokes didn't bother me particularly as I knew I was saving a lot of money by driving

  • Seriously though, why are you bothered? As I get older (I'm 33!) I care less and less what people think. You obviously work for your money - so it's your choice how you spend it surely?

I'll be honest if I see a car trying to get out and it is a) Private Reg b)newer than 11 plate c)worth more than 10k despite age, I think "You can afford to wait" and don't let them out, unless I know them of course.

That's all Fabia vRS's not getting let out then from now on as I drive along in my 2011 Superb with a private plate that might just still be worth a smidge over 10K!

^^^ LOOOOL

Ever heard jealousy like that before? Haha.

Touche !

I'll keep an eye out for you ;)

Experienced 3 seperate waves of sarcasm/bante/whatever yesterday.

2nd one was more of an explosion of ranting than anything else.

Kept my mouth shut and simply turned away exaggeratedly and violently shaking my head in disbelief at the amount of nastiness being aimed at me, albeit at someone who speaks his mind vociferously that I've had issues with in the past

Used some of the suggestions in here regarding it 'only being a Skoda', and 'I'm certainly not minted now'

Tar for those, and keep 'em coming. :D

It's a strange problem we have in this country.  Not everyone I'll add...

Work hard, earn money, buy something you like, get criticised for having too much money.

You should hear some of the things said behind my back! :D

F me, look what he's bought now!

I like the American attitude.

Nice car, you must be doing well.  Nice work!

Suggest you mention it's costing you less money than someone smoking and going down the pub wastes on killing themselves.

Or just don't give a F, like me.

Took me a few years to get used to that though.

Used to hate looking out of the front window and see a Range Rover dropping money while I looked at it parked on the drive.

Or just tell them to get a grip, it's a Skoda for F sake.

Would be a nicer world if people could just be happy for eachother, and stop bein so bloody jealous all the time

Even my youngest son has been on the receiving end of this so called 'banter' or whatever it really and truly is.

He's done immensely well for himself after an extremely difficult school life.

As has been documented in the past, I suggested he got out of the car valeting job that I'd unfortunately got him into, as he was being bullied and hated it anyway, and suggested a career in the transport industry, either HGV or PCV even though he was only 18 at the time.

He chose the PCV route and has done absolutely staggeringly well, being the youngest and most obliging valued and conscientious of employees..... (heard that from his previous boss at a private bus company that he started with initially, so it's not just me bragging)

Anyway, he bought a brand new Hyundai i20 whilst he was there, and the barrage of abuse he had to take from so called mature blokes in their 40's/50's was very upsetting for the young inexperienced in these matters cub.

They even resorted to writing disparaging comments on his wage slip that they'd leave on the canteen table for collection at the end of the month.

He'd come home literally in tears sometimes, and in the end I simply HAD to ring his boss up, apologize profusely for talking to him as though he was the school headmaster or head of year, but he actually thanked me for pointing this problem out as he was totally unaware of what was going on, and took the issue on board and placed a notice in the staff room telling and warning them all to lay off him or to face action for what was in fact a form of bullying.

It did the trick to a degree, but he left for Stagecoach not long after, much to the increased annoyance of several other drivers that didn't get through the interview procedure  :D

My point to him is, you don't drink, you don't smoke, you don't club it, you haven't got any major financial commitments apart from saving for a deposit on a house, so WHY shouldn't you treat yourself to something you've worked and continue to work, so bloody hard for.

Confronted by this sort of passive agressive nonesense I can rarely hold myself back from going the other way.

Yes it cost loads, I spent a fortune on extras too even stuff I didn't need, haha.

It's ok though coz I'm ****ing minted

How is your ****ey old banger doing?

**** 'em

When they realise you really don't give a toss for their opnion they soon shut up.

[edit,]I note you said "customer", I guess you're not quite so free to vent your spleen as I am

Indeed. I can go quite far with some, as I know when it's just the usual banterish type comments, especially when these people are driving top of the range Mercs BMW's etc, but yes, I have to tread cautiously.

I've never had a car that attracted this type of comment (well, except one instance from my mums neigh bough when I had a 3yr old Clio), but I was considering buying a newish car late last year. Octavia vRS was one of the choices (around ~11k), and I did find myself thinking about the negative impact it may have with colleagues and customers (customers more so, as I look quite a bit younger than I am the vRS seems quite a flash car for a young lad). Its sad really that I have to think like that, but in a way its saved me quite a bit of cash :)

Most certainly, and exactly how I currently feel.

It's almost bloody criminal to feel this crazy unjustified guilt imo, but guess it's just part of your genetic make up.

it REALLY doesn't seem to affect or worry some folk, and I envy that attitude tbh.

Wish I could simply flick a switch in my head and say...STUFF 'EM!  :@

I get so stressed out and annoyed with myself over some trivial matters sometimes. :wall:

Feel like a rabid mad dog chasing its own tail, wuff.

In some ways I don't care what other people think, I'd happily drive around in a beaten up Focus and accept that people may think I'm a loser. But then when it comes to shiny, I do care what people think but not in the normal sense that I'd buy the shiny to impress others. I think its the fact that if I was driving around in a beaten up Focus I know that for the most part those that are looking down on me are buying cars on tick that I could walk out and buy brand new for cash (because lets face it, those driving the really expensive metal don't give a crap about Mr Focus), that makes me feel better than knowing the piece of shiny just cost me a wedge and buying another one if it were to disappear would tax me.

Ultimately what others think shouldn't come in to it. You earned the cash you do what you want. You just need to get over that hump and learn to ignore the comments and let them wash off you. One day maybe I'll be able to do it too :)

I know exactly how you feel, Mr Ree.  I occasionally have thoughts of upgrading to a new Yeti but I am put off by memories of the snide remarks directed at me when I have bought new, less expensive cars in the past.  I do have one response, though:

When told how lucky I am to be able to afford a new car, my favourite retort is:

"Do you know.....the harder I work, the luckier I seem to get".

Enjoy the fruits of your labours, Mr R

I'll try my best.

It's not even as though it's flash!

In fact, in the great scheme of things, I suppose it's quite a mundane looking thing really, tree hugging Greenline in a quite sedate shade of silver, so i certainly didn't purchase it to pose around in.

It IS bloody marvelous though, and it smells thoroughly gorgeous when i slide into the seat.  :sun:

Could always tell them its a Cat C and was even cheaper because of the blood splatter in the back...

This reminds me of when we moved to NZ and people in the UK were constantly telling us how lucky we were to have moved here. It wasn't luck, it was years of planning, soul-searching (it's hard leaving family and friends), passing tests, medical and professional, and of course spending a large sum of money to move our lives here.

The only thing you can control is how you handle it / let it bother you. There will always be stupid opinions flying around. Always.

Ignore them, they're jealous, and don't talk yourself or your car down to please them. Enjoy your new Skoda :-)

Tell them you've just bought a porsche too just for the reaction haha

NL? Ya lucky sod.

Just got a new Superb estate, and feeling guilty.

Thought I was suppose to enjoy this experience, but alas, not so far.

Never had a car so expensive as this, and true to form and just as I was dreading would happen, the very first customer of mine to spot it today just had to launch into a short burst of insults regarding me obviously having far too much money.

Ahh well, only another couple of hundred or so  likely; to see it and bombard me with more so called 'banter'.

Almost wishing I hadn't bothered now.

Need to grow a thick skin and rapido I feel, before I lose my patience and rag with the possibility of then losing customers.

My tolerance levels towards this nonsense  are getting lower as i get older unfortunately

Anyone else suffered from this, and if so, how do you /did you respond?

I had a similar experience 'even' buying an ex-demo Rapid. Found myself justifying it to them by saying it was hardly costing me anything because the free servicing/RAC cover/warranty/lower tax/better economy e.t.c.

For some reason when you are self employed people seem to see your earnings as "their money" more so than if you work for some faceless corporation who cream off a proportion of any profit you make for their foreign shareholders.

I'm about to spend a significant sum of money refitting my shop and am already bracing myself for the mumbling, grumbling and bitchy comments

You mean you'r INVESTING and IMPROVING? !! :o

You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself.

Had one member of staff of one of my customers tell me on Friday afternoon that "I'm obviously earning far too much money".

I just stood there, exaggerated a yawn and told him "that's a new one. Not heard that one before"  .
