New car guilt

Featured Replies

Screw 'em.

You should not be made to feel guilty about having the means to buy a nice, but not exactly extravagant car. Especially if you drive around as part of your work.

  • I'd say "Nah; it's a Skoda. I need to charge you more". Self deprecation is king as a Skoda owner.

  • I'm 17 my first car was a Fabia! All my mates were making Skoda jokes until they realised just how good it was. The jokes didn't bother me particularly as I knew I was saving a lot of money by driving

  • Seriously though, why are you bothered? As I get older (I'm 33!) I care less and less what people think. You obviously work for your money - so it's your choice how you spend it surely?

Don't worry what others say, they are just jealous.

I actually hid the new car in the far corner of the compound at one of the main stealers I had to visit today

If your clients/customers are all car dealers just tell them one of the other dealers gave it to you as a thank you for being such a good supplier over the years. Stand back and watch them backtrack.

It could be worse mate - it could be the other way round. The banter I usually get is "Sort that s*** heap out," "Has that thing not been scrapped yet?" and "You're still alive then?"

In fact my step-brother came out with "Haha! It looks like it's been tarmacked!" Git.

Yea, I like that.

Really shouldn't even be having this discussion, I mean, I've worked bloody hard all my life in some right crap conditions sometimes too, so why shouldn't i buy myself something nice?

Why do I feel so bloody guilty? I can't fathom it out and it's upsetting me.

Been used to more humble things in life i suppose and never been one for posing and willy waving as it goes against the grain.

Maybe the insulter thinks it's something far 'flasher' than a Skoda? The Superb II is often taken for a Beamer by those who know no better.

I'd say "Nah; it's a Skoda. I need to charge you more".

.....................and an Expensive Wife

Like it or not, there are certain expectations about the type of car customers expect to see you in, and if you are dealing with people who aren't as well off as your car suggests that you might be then you have to be fairly sensible here.

If these are people who you'd like to keep giving you money then try not to **** them off too much.

I went through all this myself. I've always been a shrewd, careful buyer. But my Subaru cost more than my last three cars put together and there were lots of nagging doubts. The neighbour also made comments the day it arrived. But my lass was very encouraging and had a good go at me. You work very hard for your money, at least get to enjoy the product of that labour!

Exactly as you say, why shouldn't you buy yourself something nice? Get out there and enjoy your car. You bought it for you, not for them.

Many of them are either driving around in main dealer demos's, higher spec for management obviously, whilst the non main dealer garages are usually owned and run by wealthy business folk with the standard issue Range Rover, BMW or Merc.

The first insulter was a valeter.

Hadn't even got out of the car when he launched into me.

You seem like your just being a nice person, apart from your being too nice haha.

Youve got to enjoy the cash youve worked so hard for, otherwise. Whats the point in working so hard?

You cant take the cash with you, so enjoy it. Stuff em. :).

I don't think the issue here is them/what they say.

It's how you feel about your choice - and that's all you really need to be OK with.

I sense that once you are OK with it, then the external 'noise' will be irrelevant.

With the rise of PCP's and leasing having a brand new top-of-the-range motor sat on the drive isn't quite the same as it used to be.

A guy at work here is driving around in a 14 plate fully loaded Jaguar XF. He says he's paying a little over £200 / month for it after chucking in his 3 yera old Volvo as a deposit.

Driving a brand new car is now more 'affordable' than it has ever been.

I would have told the valeter to step away from the car & never go near it again.

An any expensive comment replies would be - Why thank you for the compliment, I am now very glad i didnt pay - VW/ Mercedes / BMW ( quoting their car model) price for what seems to be such an expensive car to you.

My favourite / usual response is - Driven one of these have you, so you can make an informed comment, if they say yes, then start questioning & it soon weeds out the B.S.

Hopefully things will pick up soon and you can get the Mk3 Octy vRS :P :giggle:

Hopefully mk4 when the pcp ends!

I work for a family with a whole lot of money; the breadwinner drives a Chrysler - fair enough he is now looking at a Bentley, and the Mrs drives a 4.2 Autobiography Vogue... But with the money, he could own lambo's Ferrari's and everything in-between, no helicopter despite having a helicopter pad either.

Another fella I do some work for likes his cars, used to have a dB9 - has a 640d for his 'business' car as he thinks if he turns up at a meeting/conference in a Bentley people will think, in his own words, "WHAT A C***"

As to the OP- I wouldn't worry about it at all, it is not an RS6, you're not showing off or throwing your money around, it is a sensible, mature car in my opinion.

Could be worse Ree. You could actually have an Audi,

the automotive equivalent of being HIV+, particularly if you

are trying to get let into traffic.

It shouldn't then surprise you to see that the word Audis is

an anagram of 'U AIDS'.

Indeed, and at a shown 78.7 mpg on the maxidot readout  on a trip to Chester this morning, a grin broke out!  :sun:

Nothing said at the Vauxhall dealer there, but have another much smaller one to visit this aft.

How would I respond:

Statement - "you have got too much money"

Reply - "no I haven't, I've just spent it"

Bahahahahhahahahahaha !!

Can't stop chuckling at this!

I assume you have trouble getting out of junctions?

I'll be honest if I see a car trying to get out and it is a) Private Reg b)newer than 11 plate c)worth more than 10k despite age, I think "You can afford to wait" and don't let them out, unless I know them of course.

^ thats always a good one.

Make out your skint after buying it. I do that haha.

That is, word for word, exactly the exchange I had with my neighbour :)

No not really, I use my white van most of the time and funnily enough

people expect you to be an arse in one of those so they tend to sit back

and let you do whatever you want. You are right about one thing though,

I can afford to wait ;) .

I let audi drivers go. I dont mind.

Only people im abit hesitant about letting go is older people, because i just dont like getting held up, especially if iv let them in haha.

Shame really, cos more often than not, theyve got a fabia. Just like me haha.
