Variable servicing costs?

Featured Replies

I'm struggling to find any prices or info online. I had a search but couldn't find anything. I have been quoted £270 at my local dealers. Is that about right? Iv never had to service a brand new car before.

When I had my mkII which was on variable serving my local dealer were charging around £190 per service.  My mkIII is on the 3 free fixed at the moment but expect similar price when i switch it to variable.

But the small print states that is only for vehicles over 3 years old....and only for vehicles on fixed servicing....

Indeed.  This is another great fiddle in the industry.  Service costs are made up of:

Parts - these are the same price regardless of age

Labour - the time and therefore cost is identical regardless of age

Citroen used to do the the same, I paid almost £300 each for my first 3 year services and then £120 for subsequent ones...same work, same parts, same time taken.  It's completely without justification and totally unethical.

Took a service plan out on mine for variable, doing 25k a year for 3 years and costs me £22 a month, which I don't think is bad.

I've also just taken out a variable maintenance plan with my dealer to take me from from the 30k free servicing to approx 84k, it includes 3 variable services, 1 air con service, 1 brake fluid change, 1 mot and the middle variable service is also more major so would have cost more as includes pollen filter, fuel filter, etc. I am paying just under £26 per month over 31 months for the plan, based on 24k per year so assuming services roughly every 18k or 9 month intervals. Then I intend to trade the car in before it gets to 100k. The deal saved me about £65 compared to current dealer prices, and is a fixed price, interest free payment plan so protected from future price rises. The only other maintenance option currently excluded from this is a cam belt change which they recommend at 80k or 4 years, but not sure when it has to be changed as not listed in the service book but will be out of warranty by 80k so I might wing it if not keeping the car past 4 years.

I've bought the car the old way (not PCP) so didn't get free servicing. I then bought the service pack as it seemed to be about equal to the cost of the individual services required and protected me from price increase and those hidden extras that seem to always exist. I didn't think I'd save anything really but if that £270 quote is for a single service then I'm very glad I bought the pack.

I have the three years free servicng but on the flexible regime, so I will have mine serviced shorty (circa 18,500 miles) and then again at 30,000 miles (if permissable undert the agreement) to get two free services. Too much of a PITA to go onto the fixed 10,000 miles for me.

Interesting thanks. I guess best bet is to ask local dealers if they will do a service plan. I didn't buy it from them if that makes a difference. Must suck doing warranty work on a local/rival dealers registered motor. £ 22 a month is only saving me 6 quid a service.

Will it tie it to the garage in question with a plan? Do I even have to take it to skoda? So much simpler with my old cars!

The Skoda service pack at time of original purchase doesn't tie it to a particular dealer no, but any deal you do now may do.  Legally you don't have to use Skoda or VAG dealers to maintain the warranty, but you do need to use the approved parts, stick to the right intervals and have the proof.  A local independent garage should have no difficulty with most stuff and will have slightly lower costs. However if you stay in Skoda/vag there is less chance of an argument if warranty work is needed, and you have a slightly higher chance of getting a good will reduction on work just outside the warranty period.... But that is not guaranteed.
