2.0 16v abf, simply a masterpiece of an engine

  • For reliability and overall robustness its got to be the 1.9 PD unit for me. For a good all rounder with good tuning potential Id go with the 1.8T.

1.4tsi twin charger............. Just kidding! The 1.9PD BLT gets my vote.

5 cylinder from the 80's quattro, hands down.

I think the 2.0TFSI is in with a shout.

200hp, torquey, 40mpg possible, as reliable as you can reasonably expect. Lacks a bit of aural drama if anything.

1.8 8v engine as found in the last of the mk1 Golf GTIs I think the code was 'DX'

Depends on what you value in an engine.

Best all rounder has to be the 1.8 TSI......good power coupled with reasonable MPG.

For out and out dependability and longevity it has to be any of the 1.9 PD engines......having said that a member on the Octavia Mk2 forum has a 2.0 PD DSG with 403,000 miles on it....still on it's original engine and DSG box that has yet to suffer a failure (apart from DMF).

The one under my Bonnet

1.2 3cyl 12v

I think the 2.0TFSI is in with a shout.

Not all 2.0 TFSI  are created equal ;)

265bhp and more torquey.

Mine sounds alright when I'm giving it some stick.

Only mod is a K and N panel filter. .

Probably the 1.8T or the pd130

Pd130 gives bags of torque, beautiful economy and has been proven to be highly tuneable.

But then again so has the 1.8T just without the econ :P

5.2l FSI V10

the bomb proof 1.9SDI that was in our old works caddy van apparently its nearing 500k with its current owner.....

Borrowed a Neighbours Quattro what a car!

3.0tdi V6

Only one winner. ASZ PD 130.. It's the oldest that's proved the longivity with some stella taxi mileage examples popping up now with 400k plus being seen ..

The 1.8T was a dreadful engine imo, very thirsty and slow. Not that powerful, laggy and lacked reliability especially when remapped. Coilpacks go for fun

1.9 TDi all day long. Preferably the ATD varient.

Either that or this one ;)

W16

I do have a soft spot for the older 2.7 biturbo units though.

the 1.4 16v engine (AFH engine code) was a peach, it was basically an evolution of the older 8v polo engines, but it had one of the best designed cylinder heads vw group ever produced. nothing they have made before or since has come anywhere near it for flow ability and combustion characteristics, it was designed at the time audi owned cosworth, in fact the new twingercharger cylinder head is based on it.

2.0l 8v mustang slayer

1.6 AKL.

Anybody have any experience with the 1.4 TSi Turbo in the new Polo BlueGT? 140 bhp (ps) with ACT (cylinder deactivation) giving it 61mpg, 107g/km cheap road tax, whilst keeping a modest 7.6s 0-60mph time (3dr DSG).

Looks like a perfect car for the missus when the price comes down. Any word on it being used in any other VAG cars?

So the conclusion is they are all pretty good.
