Scratches on Instrument Display Cover

Featured Replies

I'm assuming this is the same material that some watch crystals are made from, i.e. acrylic? In which case toothpaste works a treat, or a susbtance called Polywatch. Got to be worth a try. It just needs to be midly abrasive.

On the flip side, if you polish it and possibly make it worse what will you do then?

CAUTION. Do not use on touchscreens and polycarbonate (PC). So, I do not recommend this product.

I just use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery brush attachment on the dash, vents and instruments, works a treat! Baby wipes are also handy for removing various bodily fluids/solids that may have found their way onto the dash/instruments!

Matt Pez how can a brush be any good if it scratches even from a microfibre cloth? Vacuum it once and have a look on a sunnu day, I guarantee You will find alot of scratches.

Perhaps I have a soft vacuum brush, but I never noticed any scratches before, I'll have to pay closer attention next time I get in the car.

except that the Maxidot is clearly set to instant consumption otherwise it wouldn't change by 20mpg in two minutes (one photo is 12:06 and the second is either the same minute or 12:08).

Point taken.

So anyone tried any polishes? I also have scratches, not sure what to do =(, I will ask dealer about glass only replacement (cover plastic crap). Its really way too easy scratch-able, I used really fine and clean microfiber and it scratched... I'm very sad =(

Hi

I used to work in the AV dept at our local college and we used to use this polish on the Fresnel lenses on the overhead projectors when they became cloudy / scratched and it worked really well, restoring them to a high shine.

It can be polished.

When you do it, or when you get a new car, clean this plastic, piano plastic and other scrachable materials inside the car with this or similar:

I have something similar from DM, it is so soft you can't feel it with your fingers. Doesn't leave a trace, cleans all dusts easily. I keep it in the glovebox and dust instruments, HU and nasty piano black in RS 230 during a traffic light.

I will definitely never ever try to clean the damn glass on instrument cluster. Not without something like you posted above =)

I see what you all mean. This is very poor if the plastic is so easily scratched!  Who designed/allocated that as a material for use when it's obvious it would get the off wipe with a cloth! Zero R&D went into choosing that material.

Before I'd seen this thread I had given my dash a nice clean with a standard cotton cloth without evening thinking this could scratch anything. It didn't on the Octy II's dash or even the Fabia Mk 2.

Not sure if these scratches are from my effort but it's more likely from the previous owner or even the dealers valet chap.

Doubt you could ever correct it because once plastic is scratched it's scratched and you cannot really polish it out really can you.

Lame design!

Mine is probably even worse (MY18 Superb bought in August :() :/ but agree totally... I was thinking, if polish can fix clearcoat on metal, it should be able to fix plastic too? :D maybe? i really wonder cause the instrument cluster replacement must be expensive =/

Mine had scratches from day 1.

I believe the material itself comes like this.

Very much visible on direct sun light.Like swirls.

This little duster or similar will keep your cluster virtually free. Do a proper polish, give it to the people who know their job, and then maintain it properly. There is always a risk that in the service shop they will ruin it, as usually dealer's staff destroy nearly every new car they sell. What you can do is to underline them not to clean damn car. Put a manager on a passenger seat, show him cluster, plastics, exterior, and send him a clear message that they will get a bill from your detailers if they try to wipe it with a dry dirty cloth what they usually do.
