Where is my coolant temp sensor? And what one do I need?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Firstly I apologise if I have posted in the wrong place or via. the wrong method, this is my second post! :)

The engine coolant temp gauge is not working, meaning it probably is the sensor so I went on to eBay and thought I found the correct part for my car: -

and followed this giude: -

Once I got the engine cover off, it looked completely different from the guide and I'm unsure where the sensor is located, so I thought I would take some photos of where I think it might be: -

Image 1 is under the engine coolant tank where there is a device that might be the sensor with 3 pins of similar shape.

Image 2 is on the engine in a similar place to the guide but has 4 pins.

Anyone know which one it is please?

Many thanks

Hi there, it's neither of those. It's item 18 in this image and is difficult to see because it's hidden under the top hose....

Actually... Looking at the diagram again. I can't figure out where this is on the engine? Is it between the engine and battery?  :D

And yes, that's the part number I have...

Thanks again.

Yes, between engine and battery. If you follow the top hose from radiator back to the engine, it should be under there I think :)

Yes, it's held in place by a plastic circlip, there may even be two of them depending on your engine, you'll need to drain the coolant before taking it out.

what coolant and what ratio should you put back in? is it all the same for skodas?

Re-use the old stuff which you drained off, I use about 50/50 glycol and water because my engine is all alloy and corrosion inhibition is more important than the antifreeze properties.

yeah... it kinda drained off all over the drive - oops
Will be getting cambelt done soon (and waterpump) so will replace it with fresh stuff then :)
Cheers

Well I found the sensor, which was so fiddly to change! Got it done and the gauge is working now! Erm, yes, I should have drained it... It just emptied out all over my work's car park when I pulled the old one out! Whoops...

Thanks for your help...
