At the end of my tether (2006 2.0 TFSi)

Featured Replies

My VRS (2.0 TFSI) has been nothing but trouble for me since I bought it in August 2013.

The latest issue is hesitation/misfire under acceleration and a lumpy idle. The hesitation gives the feeling like you're tapping the brake.

I've uprated the diverter valve as was slightly split, no change. The garage diagnosed a jammed PCV and replaced, no change.

Today I replaced all the Ignition Coils, one was quite dirty but did them all anyways (tried to get them in for a recall with Skoda but mine apparently isn't eligible). When I fire it up it seemed quieter than normal, probably placebo. Driving, seemed fine at first but now the misfire is worse than ever and the idle is as rough as normal.

What is wrong with the car?! It infuriating! Has anybody had similar issues? Could it be the injectors?

I thought that the 2.0 TFSi would be a step up from the 1.8T 20v but its no where near.

Things replaced so far:

4x Tyres

2x Wheel bearings (3 if you include the faulty one done under warranty)

1x N80 valve

1x Thermostat

1x Diverter Valve (Rev D)

1x Pressure Control Valve

2x Rear Brake Pads

4x Ignition Coils

Does it mis-fire if you're at a stand still and rev it up a bit?

Have you have it scanned for errors, by someone other than a dealer?

IIRC when you use the brakes the ECU does shut the throttle off, so it could, in theory, be down to a dodgy brake switch. If you've got cruise control, it would hold for a while and then dis-engage as it would think you'd touched the brakes.

Carbon build up possibly? Mine was "cured" with a prolonged dose of enthusiastic driving over 1000 miles or so. Seemed to do the trick for me.

How many miles on it?

Carbon build up was the next thing on my list. The hesitation has been there for a few thousand miles and no end of injector cleaner, v power or enthusiasm seems to have resolved it.

Brake switch is an interesting point, it does give the impression of the brakes being tapped. It occurs when the accelerator is pressed more than half way.

The garage scanned and came up with the PCV.

Milage is at 81k

My TSi had a similar misfire problem. Ended up be solved with new spark plugs.

The dealer originally changed the coil packs but it didn't solve it, went back 3 times until the found it was dodgy plugs.

Do you have VCDS? If so log the misfires on each cylinder. Sounds possible it's an injector or carbon build up.

As above see if the logs report a misfire, if not fuel starvation, replace fuel filter and sparks plugs if not then you have new plugs an oil in anyway, then check injectors

Well the car gave up the ghost on the commute this morning, luckily near my garage. Engine management light blinking like mad before staying on, car shaking violently and at about 10% power. Limped in to the garage and left it with them.

Hopefully they can resolve the issue now that it has flagged up an error. Fingers crossed.

My car was beginning to develop similar (but not as pronounced) symptoms a couple of years ago. I'd also changed my diverter valve, PCV and coil packs (part of a recall) to little effect.

The car was due in for a service anyway within a couple of days of it getting worse so I waited til after that to get it seen to, the only additional thing they did during the service was to change the sparkplugs and when I got it back it was running perfectly again.

The symptoms sound very similar to the issues I had about 18 months ago, a clean of the inlet manifold, a new PCV and most importantly a new injector on cylinder 3 solved mine.

All issues now resolved. Turns out one of the ignition coils I fitted was faulty, that along with a fresh set of spark plugs has sorted it right out. Its back to it old self. Unfortunately now the wife wants me to sell to get something more economical...

Thanks for all the input from everyone.
