I vaguely remember this being discussed with gusto at its launch.

 

Why oh why didn't they?

Considering just how popular the mk1 was, this will end up being one of motoring history's  greatest unanswered mystery's  for eternity.

 

It was an epic fail, the success of the mkI was 90% down to the engine, that's why I bought on new in 2006, was a cracking car.

    The VRS should have had a 2.0 TDI lump as an option. The 1.6 even with a remap isn't worthy of the VRS badge. IMO!!

    The 1.4 TSI is a brilliant engine if you get a good one......

    I don't know a 1.6 tdi 130 with a suitable turbo and internals would have worked.
