Fines to increase by 50%

Featured Replies

Just seen on the news for tomorrow's papers one is reporting some motoring fines are set to rise.

Using a mobile up to £4000, speeding £10k and new offences for drug driving.

No rise in points.

If you dont drink, smoke, do drugs, easy red meat, sleep around, drive fast or ride a motorbike, then you'll live longer. Or it will certainly feel that way anyway.

10k for speeding WTF!........ Where's my radar detector?

Don't speed, do drugs, etc. then no risk of getting caught and no need to worry.

Break the law, get caught and pay the fines. Pity they didn't put points up as well. That would stop repeat (rich) offenders.

Personally I think the points limit should only count for dangerous driving (well in excess of the limit, drink & drugs etc.

A few miles over should just be a fine, increasing each time. And no clean licence after a ban

Look like sensational headlines to grab your attention to me. Not the actual info.

Meh i take my chances

If you lived within the law your entire life you would end up leading an extremely boring existence

I think it's more to do with the crazy speeds some have been caught doing. As in 150-200mph

These are MAXIMUM fines, very rarely used.

Quite right.

And as such only used in exceptional cases

Like those looney sods doing 130 across

two counties with a helicopter and 12 police cars chasing them down.

Or premier league footballers doing 150 in high powered cars who can

easily suffer a bill like that. Joe Bloggs doing 42 in his Astra hasn't got

to worry about remortgaging to pay a speeding fine just yet...

Been means tested for years (supposedly) my 'only' stoppage for speeding (96mph in 1990) resulted in a straight ban for 2 weeks and a fine of circa £130, which was quite a chunk back then for a Farm worker. Not complaining I did the crime and that. A few weeks later though I read about a company director being done for doing 130mph in his Ferrrari Testarossa on the same road. The cops thanked him for stopping in Bridport else they wouldn't have caught up with him. He got fined £300 and a 4 week ban. Pocket change for someone like that.

I'll take my chances on that...

[Pedantic] The title for this thread should read "Fines to increase by 400%" as they are going to quadruple fines not increase them by a half [Pedantic/]

Loonies driving at 130 across counties in stolen cars aren't going to have the means to pay even the fines as they stand now, so it'll hardly act as a deterrent (which is the governments wishes).

And when you earn £100K, £200K or £300K a week, a £10K fine for speeding on the M56 towards Carrington probably won't make much difference either.

That's true but I didn't say they would have to pay them.

Or whether or not they will be a deterrent for the filthy rich

Just the types of offender they will be used for. They make for good

headlines but yes in reality the Adidas tracksuit brigade will be paying

these fines at a rate of a pound a month or some other ridiculous amount

if at all. I'm more in favour of far harsher penalties than unrealistic and

unpayable headline grabbing big figure fines but that won't happen

either as we are too soft over here.

My oh my.

Bet you're a barrel of laughs to be with on a night out with the boys. :dull:

What's included in the "etc" btw?  :notme:

Well the Max for speeding is going up from 2500 to 10,000 but this is only at court.

It is very rare to get anywhere near the max now but could be quite a money maker.

So, because I don't break the law, I lead a dull life?

Do you need to break the law to live a full and exciting life?

I suspect the journalists / & editors who put out this sensationalism are the same people who do not actually understand what the word  average in average speed camera means & just print - Speed camera.  :x

In other news, embezzling expenses continues with Parliament's tacit approval.

One set of laws for the plebs..........

And in any case - how much of the current fines go unpaid every year? This is more blatant hot air.

You just sack the driver and get another one.....

Maybe they could try maintaining the roads and using sensible speed limits that don't mean people are on their brakes all the time just to keep to the limit. No accelerator needed.

Look up the Bournemouth spur road for a great example of a stupid limit. Esp when you see then nsl roads coming onto it.

Instead of increasing fines, driving whilst disqualified should be a minimum 6 month prison sentence and a lifetime driving ban. Jail term doubled for each subsequent offence.

Instead of increasing fines, driving whilst disqualified should be a minimum 6 month prison sentence and a lifetime driving ban. Jail term doubled for each subsequent offence.

Why exactly? Each case should be judged on its own circumstances:

Disqualified mother rushing her ill or injured child to hospital because an ambulance couldn't get there in time - mandatory 6 month prison sentence? Really?

Motoring penalties in this country are already over zealous and disproportionate and generally have the biggest impact on the "normally law abiding". In most cases there is no victim (except that loose notion of "society") and the impact on the offender is already often sizeable - insurance increases, possible loss of job through totting up, etc.

Offenders of crimes where there is a tangible victim often get minimal sentencing and the victims get nothing - that's where the government ought to be focusing it's legal reforms. But then again I guess if you're sufficiently well off to be able to buy, fuel, insure and maintain a car you can afford to pay, whereas if you're criminally minded you probably steal and therefore have little or no material possessions with which to pay.

Why exactly?

Because there are far too many "customers" who are caught and prosecuted for driving whilst disqualified multiple times. If they hit you, they will be uninsured, and YOU will lose out as a result.
