What size wheels/tires can i get away with?

Featured Replies

Im looking for another set of wheels for my octy to use for track days. an evening session at brands and a day at snet has pretty much ruined my first set of tires so i would rather have some wheels with track day rubber on.

What size wheels/rubber can i get away with. I Have seen a few sets of audi/vw wheels on ebay but they are running wider tires and i dont know what will fit.

Cheers

Providing they fit, I would base your wheels size choice on cost of track rubber. Nice as it is to have bigger better looking wheels, the cost of tyres can rocket upwards, for little real world performance gain.

Get a used, straight, not so pretty set, spray them matt black and enjoy.

I have no problem with smaller more ugly wheels. what size will fit over the calipers? 17s ok?  Im not looking for bling factor just something better for the track.

also i dont really understand the widths of the wheels. 8j?? whats that 8" wide?

Yes 8J = 8" wide, but just as important are things like offset (the ET number) and the PCD.  Stock ET on a vRS is 51mm and PCD is 5 x 112mm.  I have a set of winter tyres on 8 x 18 ET45s and they fit and handle fine. This will help.... http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp

Rule of thumb - the smaller the ET number the more the wheels stick out. That assumes a similar wheel width though. Too wide and you could have back-spacing issues (i.e. the fronts hit the body on full lock, or rub on the suspension.  If you're not sure then stick with near stock and you won't go far wrong.

Will 17s fit over the brakes?  Probably but would be very close. Try before you buy!

ive spent a little while trying to learn what the numbers mean this afternoon.

Refer to http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html which will tell you everything you need to know about wheels.
