Ha Ha I love people who bring this argument up.  'Car tax' hasn't been ringfenced to pay for roads since before World War 2.

That's 'cos they don't produce any CO2.  There may be many other reasons, but that's the best argument for that one in my experience, as it directly correlates to the VED bands.

There have been some estimates of the CO2 emissions involved in making and using the bike, including the food required to keep the cyclist moving like this one which worked it out at 21g/KM - still comfortably into the zero VED band.

I'm sure I produce plenty of CO2 when I'm lunbering up the hills carrying my laptop.

But VED is solely based on what comes out of a vehicles exhaust.

I'm sure people also produce CO2 when driving..... I generally don't hold my breath while in the car.....

Well I've paid my £20 for the Octavia, so it doesn't really matter if I choose to drive it or take the bike instead :D

It's definitely not co2 that comes out of my exhaust when I'm cycling... :-P

Living in Surrrey I only wish there was a button on my steering wheel to open the passenger door when passing cyclist riding two or more abreast in traffific.. Check the Highway Code. And Before any cycle peeps get on your high horse I will point out there was an interview on the local radio where a club leader said they incouraged riding four abreast to hold up traffic. Note. I ride a bike, use cylcle lanes where available unlike the local Lycra Louts who prefer to hog the middle of the road even if they are on their own..

Rant over,

So anytime you do something that mildly irritates me I'm entitled to shove you and your car of the road with my JCB?

I can't wait.

Briskoda cycling tops anyone?

I could wear it instead of my Pistonheads jersey!

Good idea if we can get them made for a sensible price.

I just love these car v bike threads.

I drive, cycle and motorcycle significant mileages on a yearly basis and I can absolutely state that it is some car and LCV drivers that are the biggest threat on our roads......the bad ones (perhaps the original poster of this thread may have some of these tendencies ) completely forget the fact that they are driving machines that can do serious injury to pedestrians/cyclists/motorcyclists. It isn't often that a car driver comes off worst in a collision with these other road users.

Just chill out, adopt the maritime principle of "powered gives way to non-powered", treat others as you would want to be treated and the roads would be much happier places.

As an aside, I cycle to work (around 8 miles each way through a mix of country/city roads) and experience mostly good behaviour from most road users...........but the bad ones are really bad and often transition quickly to threatening behaviour/road rage.
