Superb to Octy vRS for a 71 year old ?

Featured Replies

My only advice here (after going from an Octavia vRS to a Superb) would be that it is vital you get to take the vRS on an extended test drive, ideally over a few days.

One of the reasons I fell out of love with the vRS was the ride. The sports suspension was firm and over the rough, poorly maintained roads on my commute I couldn't bare it anymore.

The problem with a 20 minute test drive is that you are wooed by the new car experience.

......but I do try to miss the holes in the roads which tests how good the seats hold you which I don't think is great in the Superb.

I have fitted a pair of CG locks to my Fabia's front seat belts and one to the driver's seatbelt on my Octavia II. They transform the way you are held in the seats during cornering and on long journeys, where I can suffer from back pain.

Why not keep your current car which has given you good service and should last for years to come? Even if you have to replace the DPF in the future, the cost of that will be a fraction of the depreciation on any replacement car.

My thinking too, if your Superb is in good shape, been maintained properly, (hopefully on the interval service plan using 502 / 505 spec engine oil) then why not keep it for another 3 years?

If you really want the DSG to stop changing up early, use the manual mode to hold it in a lower gear, or possibly adopt a slightly more determined driving style.

The car "learns" how you drive, but it's capable of changing throttle response & shifting rpms if ypou drive it differently. (Fuzzy logic in the software, methinks!)

I'm in the process of re-educating my EOS to forget what it's like to live with the previous owners habits, & to forget the South Devon roads too.

It's not an instant process, but the long-term overall fuel consumption has improved from 23 mpg to 35 mpg, & it's beginning to feel like it does have 210ps under the hood!

PS, why are there two threads on this subject in two different forums?

Hi silver 1011,

I totally agree with your observations about test drives and the potential new car experience decision.

Hi oldnewbie2,

I have tried the varying driving techniques you suggest but I don't think it should necessary to move out of DSG particularly when just driving slowly locally.

I am interested to know that the car learns your own driving techniques which is new news to me. I wonder how it does it and how long. It would probably mean that I shouldn't let my wife drive the car on that basis.

The reason I posted this discussion in both the Superb and Octavia forums is to make sure I get the views of existing owners who might not look at any other forum site. Additionally, I wondered whether Superb owners would be favouring their comments towards their own models and similarly for vRS owners.

Hi ruffday,

Thanks for your thoughts which are welcome.

I have not been able to find a local Mk3  vRS 2.0ltr DSG car for a longer test drive so perhaps the 1.8 if available will be a good test particularly with regard to the ride.

I know this is cheeky but does anybody living in the West Sussex area have a vRS and be prepared to take me out for a spin.  Thanks in hope !!

Well I only drove the 1.6 TDi but was glad to get back in my Superb.

I am not sure if its still the same but a few years ago you could book a test drive through the Skoda UK website and they would arrange for a car to be at your local dealers for extended test drives.

When I had the 1.8TSi for road test I had it for 3 days.

Thanks about the tip to contact Skoda direct for an extended test drive. I did visit my local dealer this morning and that is exactly what they are trying to arrange. Let's wait and see !!!
