  • I run a chargecooler on my rs turbo, used it on track and road and it works well, the escort cosworth used the main rad which is pointless, a seperate independant water source is a must for chargecool

  • There's a diesel rallycross Audi tt in the british championship has one. Seen it a few times, mike boak is the owner, I think he has a website

  • So what do you suggest doing with all the heat? 2 litres plus pipework will boil in the first few seconds of full boost!

Fabooka. Yes using torque pro but currently unable to find the logs afterward ?

Any kind of forced cooling like c02 or nitrus are not allowed and true water injection is out technically as the engine is only allowed to ingest naturally airboirne stuff. Water injection would be the easy way I guess if I can get away with it.

Quarter mile fast 'n' furious rubbish isn't going cut it on a 10 mile rally stage any more than those kind of drivers could.

What I posted is not a nos purge kit . . If thats what your trying to be smart about.

I dont recall seeing cryo coolers on any of the fast and furious stuff.

So take ya smart arse remarks elsewhere. . I was trying to be helpfull with a suggestion. .

All you ever do is cause trouble of threads which arnt even yours.

Whatever, only saw the first film, don't really know what you're talking about, best not to guess if you don't know, right?

Charge cooler choices....

EBay "special" - £100ish

PWR "barrel coolers"

Then there's the OEM fit and custom fab end of the market.

Unless it's 10-15 seconds at a time on the drag strip, the whole system needs to be able to dump heat at a similar rate the charge air dumping it into the water. That means BIG water flow rates and a BIG radiator with a BIG pump and BIG pipes.

Yes but I'm thinking maybe as the charge cooler is cooling while I'm on the brakes too it would be OK? I really don't know tbf but just looking at a few setups they really can cut down on the boost pipework massivly . rad wise not fussed anything will fit where the ac rad was .

The op wanted suggestions. . I gave one. .

It was a suggestion nothing else. . Even if I dont know what im talking about its q suggestion for them.

You mean This Car.

And this is the engine showing the Charge Coolers.

B)

Had one on my old golf tdi

Couldnt take the psi of a big blower and crapped itself

it was a PWR one. PWR recommend no more than 30psi boost. Ideal for a petrol turbo not a high boosting derv

Is that a Dump Valve I see? On a diesel????

Don't worry i removed it.

Previous owner #pleb

Car came with 12k of receipts from jabbasport and dervdoctor so i turned a blind eye

I don't have the pics anymore but had a 12v pump that ran continuously. A big radiator on the front and quite a big tank behind drivers side bumper.

Also ran 'aquamist' meth injection to keep it cooler.

Was a nice idea especially with the short run on the boost pipes but was essentially on the wrong car.

Focus Rs Mk1 used chargecooler method and was alright but alot of them choose to swap it out because of heatsoak, also was a kit available for Escort and Fiesta turbos as my mate ran one on her Escort turbo. I think its more suited to petrol due to less time on boost.

Oh well just won one on ebay, was cheap enough to try anyway, I've had a look into using the ac rad as a pre rad and can't see any problems once the filter is removed and a bleed tap fitted, it fits in the space needed etc. all I need to buy are some 62>50mm adaptors and a pump really and I can give it a try.

That audi has 2 of them!! how much power does that thing make?

Fabooka has worked out that I can't gain anything massive by going bigger on the turbo so I will concentrate on getting the intake as cool as possible and keep what I have for longer and most of it will be better protected from stone and crash damage etc, a water rad can be repaired with some epoxy putty to keep me in a rally where a split intercooler is dead...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251604103428?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

this is what I just won on ebay, didn't intend to win it that was my max bid and thought it would go to £100 or so..

Cheers, I think 115ltr per minute is maybe a touch overkill tho, ?

but I notice they do  15/25 and 80 ltr/min pumps too which would be more like it. I need to do some calculations on heat and cooling, (when I say I , I really mean someone much more clever than myself)

first I need to know how much heat I'm producing I guess then go from there, the rest is about flowing the coolant and having spare capacity I think?

The stag owners club use and recommend them however I've not tried one myself yet! Still got to rebuild the stag!

Found another pic and some info

Dbilas performance camshaft

Tubular manifold with exhaust gas temperature sensor

TurboDynamics Hybrid Garrett VNT20 Turbocharger

Custom made down pipe to meet Milltek system

High Flow Injectors (+40% Flow over stock PD130/150)

PWR Air to Liquid Intercooler, with custom 5 litre header tank and large pre-rad

ERL Water Injection System with 10 litre in boot water tank

Helix single mass flywheel and up-rated clutch

Carbon Air Intake and cone filter behind bumper

Oh and as your limited to air intake size another idea for you.

My brother was part of a formula student team and they were restricted to a 20mm intake. They did some fancy air intake that held air when you dont require it.

Tbh its beyond me but they did a lot of calcs etc and it worked.

Heres a pic of it. Maybe you could incorporate something like it

see the other thing I was thinking, I can have a water tank inside the cabin, as long as it is only water, so if that's in the boot with alloy or braided pipes running across the floor to it that should help with cooling and gets a bit of weight off the front end. not going to be a 5 minute job tho I guess

Looks a good buy that Jim :)

Hoping you will log temps before and after fitting for reference?

  • Author

Yea I'll be fully logging everything mate. Hopefully I've got torque pro to log inlet temps and I'll log the entire rally Sunday if it works
