So if I'm lucky enough to get Thai New job, I'm thinking Track car!

Choices are as follows but please add onto!

Clio PHASE 1 172 - Love these compared to new 182 facelift shape, cheap to buy, nippy,light,good handling just insurance is more than the others but the car itself can be picked up for max £1500 for a decent one.Thinking full lightening,fibreglass/carbon boot ,doors ect.

Golf R32 Mk4 - Now for some reason imsurance is same price as the 172 but obviously like 3k more car price, but this would also become more of a day to day driver also! Because it's like my favourite car everr! Lol. Probly just have springs /billys,strut braces and few others so not as hard core.

106 XSI/GTI - Cheap to buy and insure, nippy for what they are, semi decent handling, not as good as people say because there on tortion bar so just let go without warning like springs! Lol, lots of cheap bits around like Clio, just abit to tinny compared to the 172.

Also was thinking Clio Valver if I can source one, like the GTI but better to look at, but rots real bad, priced the same as the GTi, quick for 150bhp if it had the Willy conversion ;) insure is reasonable.

These will all be ROAD track cars as I'd have to travel to the playground in it; plus a pop to shops now again for a blast when not in mood for Octy.

What's everyone's opinion? And other options I should consider?

Something 2 wheel drive, a pusher or a puller and without much electronic complexity. Good engine. Divertrain and brakes. And what you can maintain and repair cheaply.

If it's expensive I wanted 4wd, but a phase 1 172 seems to fit the bill nicely for good suspension engine. And cheap

BMW E36 328i is cheap to pick up and has the bonus of being rear wheel drive.

Mx5 is normally a good starting point too - rear wheel drive and lots of forced induction kits available. Some mx5s already have an LSD too, from the factory.

MGTF 160 (RWD, Dirt cheap.... 160BHP stock and a bit more available, handles the twists very well, cheap remaps (£200) from the guy who made the originals and great community)

Why not go with a Focus RS,

or a Focus Estate ST to carry 4 Track Wheels & Tyres to the track.

 

Fast Nissan for AWD, Audi RS 3 or RS4, Subaru, EVO etc etc

Agree with the above. Sunday in the citigo was the hardest trackday I've ever done. Not because of the car, well ok in part due to the lack of power. Because I needed to be so spot on not to loose momentum. So getting the line bang on etc :) A lot of fun, not just standing on the loud pedal.

 

It is to be fair not the best track car, efficient mind.

A 4x4 will just be boring imho. Having tracked a haldex 4x4 and a rs, both 1.8t, the rs was more fun, more challenging, more patience ;)

 

I'd personally go with something rear wheel drive. Plenty of 325's on fleabay too. MX5s are a joy to drive regardless, any of the imports or 1.6, given the 1.6 is lighter, alloy bonnet than the later 1.8's which the newer you go get more fat spec items.

 

If I had 2k today. I'd go with an mx 5 or 325. The former being slightly cheaper to run. A totally stripped out 325 with a rich mix and £50 chip will just about show a 220 1.8t RS a clean set of heels on an open drag.

I'd say say a 106/saxo varient. quicker on track than the 172 and valver and easier to work on in my opinion

Golf 4 motion like James I who seems to have a pretty good setup and can use all of his power rather than wasting it

Something cheap and save up for a Caterham

Saxo vts - cheap as chips and should waste a porky r32 and 182 without issue

Volvo Estate V70 T5 for 230bhp plus out of the box and room for track wheels and spares in the back.

 

Plenty around cheap enough to spend a bit on and cheap insurance. Spend a bit more for the 4wd R version.

 

They made very good touring cars.

You can get a V70R with 300 ps, Brembo Brakes as standard,  

handling is Sporty Motorway type interesting, certainly not 'Touring Car' /'Track Car' like until you spend quite some money.

Definitely something light, with cheap parts.  If you track it regular and hard, something heavy like the r32 will just eat pads and tyres.

VTS would make an excellent track tool in my opinion.  I had a vtr many moons ago and the handling was truly excellent, OK you won't be drifting it like a RWD but then you will get thrown off most track days if you get too lairy anyway.

 

If you can stretch maybe a VX220, not sure what prices are like ATM but you could could get a repaired Cat d for about £6k a year or so ago.

That pretty much sums up an MX5 doesn't it?

 

I know it's mentioned above by others but they do make damn good track cars.

MK4 R32 will be very similar to my MK4 V6 4Motion, HEAVY! It is however very good on a damp track as you can use the power.

 

 If you have the choice of any car the look for rear wheel drive and light should be great fun.    

Re MX5 / Euros.

They do rather fit some body shapes and sizes more than others, head butting the A pillar can be an issue. 

 

A Porsche Boxter or Cayman might be required for the fuller figure, but sadly as much as i can get in them, exiting with giving others a laugh is impossible.

I had 2 x Valvers, 1 Williams and 2 x 172 sport.(check my photo uploads) The best of all was the Williams however you wont find one

in good nick for your money.

Therefore the next best would be a valver in my opinion handle better than the 172 awesome lift off over-steer cocks the back wheel up

in the corners, They corner almost flat. The old megane coupe has has the same 2.0l bottom end engine as the Williams easy swap

good for tuning upto 160bhp with just breathing mods. Strip it out put a roll cage in and its a track weapon likely to embarrass a few

performance cars.

Oh and saxo? forget it they don't handle or stop anywhere near as well as the Clio. They were my main quarry on the track loved repeatedly lapping them.
