Peugeot 205 GTI appreciation thread

Featured Replies

The bx GTi 16 was a bloody hoot. :)

The cti always worried me a bit, what with all that extra flex.

I had an 8v version for a few months.

Yet ANOTHER car I wish I'd kept , along with the now virtually extinct 1.6 Visa GTi too. (same engine as the the 205 iirc)

That was just SO much fun!

Come on Peugeot... Get your bleeding act together and bring out some cars than handle like a dream.

I've never been a Pug fan as I'm the wrong generation. My memories of Peugeots are of unreliable rot boxes. However the RCZ-R is promising as it's been developed by Peugeot Sport. Supposed to be quite a good bit of kit and showing Peugeot are going in the right direction.

it's the ONLY car (IMO) in their miserable current muntery line up that is.

I'd have the big van they do and an RCZ that is all though!

Peugeots........."Rot boxes"?????  im 40 so what generation are you?........never seen a rotten peugeot in 23 years of being a mechanic/mot tester, yes the build quality has always been a bit cheap & nasty(saying that my 24  year old pug gti doesnt have any interior rattles & everything still works) unreliable....hmm.....just the same as any modern car full of electrics in my opinion.

I'm 25 so mates first cars weren't the best examples. A friend of mine loved his Peugeots. First car was a 106 that had both seat bases rust away, electrical problems and two head gaskets. Then went for a 306 DTurbo which always had suspension problems, especially on the rear axle. His last was a 206 HDI which was just a dog. Not very quick, again had electrical gremlins and plastics were just nasty.

I do appreciate the 205 GTI though but they aren't worth the bonkers money they go for. I know many got supercharged which made them a bit more interesting.

Never seen a supercharged 205,most of them had the mi16 engine fitted or a turbo, thats what makes a standard example worth more than a modded one, although id hardly call £2000 "bonkers money" for one.

306 rear suspension problems were that nobody did the rear bushes causing weirdness with the passive rear wheel steering.

IMHO vw have more of a rust issue, I've never seen rust on any pas car I owned.

The big problem with so many cars is a complete lack of maintenance. Then people wonder.

Now I want to find a bx again.

Slightly off topic but i once had to replace all the hydraulic pipes on a citroen bx 1.9 gti, what a job that was,it was like a mass of pipes going everywhere, took us a week.  great cars to drive though,The XUD diesel engines did have a habit of blowing a head gasket but once it was done they where fine then(so did the k-series rover engine  :p ) .

Decent ones start £5k+. A £2k one will probably need a fair bit doing to it and will have 150000miles plus on it.

These are what I'd call bonkers money.

The one at the porsche dealer has been for sale for months & months, its not far from where i live & i went down to view it in my pug, told him it was way overpriced but he just laughed & said some idiot will buy it we are a porsche dealer......i told him how much i paid for mine & he asked if i wanted to sell him mine.....lol.

I've been saving to buy myself a mk2 xr2 next year, I could never afford the insurance as a teenager & ended up with the mk2 1.4sport, this thread has reminded me just how much I loved my 309gti & they're not much differently priced to the xr2..

You dont see many 309 Gti's around,I like the both the mk1 & mk2 XR2,im not a fan of the mk3 XR2i though.

My eldest has one rotting away in his back garden.

He WAS going to do it up to enjoy and then move on, but that was 5 years ago, and it's just a sad skip now, full of junk rubbish and bits he took off.

He is one LAZY git.

Save It then Mr Ree!

I liked the goodwood (who didn't) but they are so rare now & even more rare to find one that's not been tinkered with, I had a phase1 3dr gti with the foam rear spoiler/kent high lift cam/piggy back ecu/mongoose exhaust/lowered (springs were fitted before I bought the car) & k∋, it was a real hoot to drive

For me the Fiesta has to be the mk1/mk2, they looked/lost their feel after that.

Was a Manta GTE Coupe(not hatch ) I wanted. Don't see many about now not even at rallies. Although there was a tasty Opel Ascona on the Solway coast rally last week.

I fell in love with the 205 GTI when I saw one at an Air Show in the early 80s; hadn't even passed my test at the time. Sadly, I've never actually driven one as I got into VW GTIs when I did pass my test. I would love to find an immaculate and original car at an affordable price; not likely to happen though.

And you wouldn't want to have an accident in one!

Only the 1.9 XUDt and usually due to poor coolant maintenance or people turning up the fuel pump :)

The 1.7 XUD/XUDt, the 1.9 XUD and the 2.1 XUDt were all fine.

As for tasty opal ascona... my dad had one when I was a kid. 1.9 or 2.0 SR and rear wheel drive I seem to remember.

  • 1 month later...

Due to a house move my Pug has been put up for sale.....new buyer collects on tuesday.

Awww those 80s bring back such childhood days of mine :-)

They always compared the French vs Japs in those days.

The Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi

The Citreon AX GTi

Renault 5(?)

Vs

Toyota Corolla GTi

Daihatsu Gtti

Suzuki Swift GTi

Not sure which was the worse death trap!

But did i care then?!!!

Still - not own any of those yet :-(

Now I've moved, my mileage has all but stopped and home has a spare off-road parking pace I've been tempted to get an old school hatch like this as a second toy for a bit, run for a while and sell on. Can't see me losing on it as 205's for example are only going up in value.
