Cracks between tread - should I worry?

Featured Replies

My rear tyres have around 3mm of tread left.  On checking them today, I noticed cracks between the treads. The cracks are not too deep or wide, but don't look too good to me.

Should I worry about them?  I'm about to replace the fronts and was hoping to get a bit more life out of the rears!

Usually down to the tyres being old.

I would replace them.

I just checked the date code, and it looks like they were made in 2011...

I don't like the look of the cracks (never seen this on any car I have owned before), so looks like it will be all four replacing at once.

If that was on my car id be replacing them,if they are on 3mm then they havent much life left anyway.

I'd replace them! To me looks like they've been off the car in direct sunlight

Some FWD cars' back tyres last forever, or at least until they should be 'retired' through old age.

The modern wisdom is that new tyres, when only two are fitted, should always go on the back - one incidental benefit of that is to finish off the otherwise everlasting back tyres.

I prefer to move them around so that they wear evenly, and to replace them all at once.

I wouldn't worry.

It's just superficial as the strength of the tyre comes from the steel/kevlar weave in the carcass.

I'm sure most will disagree though.

Normally I'd say put 'em on the front and finish them off, but given it will be winter fairly soon I'd replace them. You don't want low tread front or rear if it starts snowing.

I've had rear tyres go like that before. One of them lost shape and started to disintegrate on the motorway. I would replace if you can.

Father in laws were like that, but on the sides as well. So bad they literally fell apart when being removed from the rims.

He's very grateful I told him to get them done as was about to take 4 grandchildren on a long motorway drive.

I woudn't worry too much but as said you're down to 3mm anyway, good time to get new tyres with the winter not so far away.

Yep, it will be new tyres all round. As has been said, no point in risking them, especially as we seem to have suddenly been plunged into winter!

Goodyear eagle F1's all round ?

Certainly won't be replacing it with Conti's if this is a sign of their quality!

A vote here for the Eagle F1's. They are great tyres and will use again

I'd put my vote to Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance

With winter coming up why not look at all seasons?

Should have said something like the Goodyear vector 4 seasons.

For sure put your new tyres on the rear, avoid the risk of aqua planning.

Ref the cracks, I wouldn't worry too much, maybe replace at 2mm.

Don't forget that the conti go rock hard at 3mm (The German limit) so they'll be worn out now.

In a word- REPLACE. You can see the cracks on the outside, but what's happening on the inside. I'd say that's a fast deflate waiting to happen .

4 Eagle F1s are being fitted later this week.

Hopefully will be a bit safer!  And hopefully will give a bit more grip than the current Conti's...

Better safe than sorry, I would replace them..

I'm in the minority, I'd be running them to the wear bars.

Better to replace them. When cracks appear in the tread water gets into the structure of the tyre and rusts the steel belt. The tyre will eventually mis-shape and could blow out.

I have had 4 new Eagle F1's fitted today - eventually...

I booked it in, and pre-ordered the tyres (and an MOT)

Dropped it off this morning, got a call midday to say all done, and MOT passed.

On arriving home, I noticed that I had Eagle F1 on the rear, and Eagle Efficient on the front

So, I had to take it back to get the correct F1's put on the front.

The tyre centre was very apologetic, but it does worry me that they can put completely the wrong tyres on!
