  • I'd never get this type of insurance and I hope it doesn't become compulsory in the future. Don't want someone knowing where I am, when I am and where I've been. Massive invasion of privacy! Not to me

Thats not the cars fault though? That's down to the way you drive.

Lol well done Harry

Driving style not the car!

Won't this affect you going forward? As now you've got to say "yes" to the "have you ever had insurance cancelled?"

Did it happen based on being on track or was it purely on "private roads" :)

Just how fast were you going to get a black mark?

No wonder my insurance is so expensive on a Fabia vRS.

When I started to drive I paid an extra £400 just to avoid this

I think they count 'rapid acceleration' as dangerous too. Even if you don't break the speed limit

Yeah they do from what I read and severe braking so if I'm trying to avoid a crash and brake hard I get charged money! WTF and that's one of the reasons I didn't get it and also the curfew!

That app is for the tartan blanket and scatter cushion brigade, no-one who drives any distance or at any speed should ever entertain having it.

My 18-year old lad has just passed his test and has a black box in his car. Why? Well the Bank of Mum and Dad gave him the car and the Bank of Mum and Dad are paying the insurance so we feel that we have the right. Yes, it does mean that he can't drive between 2300 and 0600 and he has to drive responsibly, but I reckon that's no bad thing in his first year of driving. And it's a 69bhp Mk 1 Ford Ka so not likely to be speeding!

When he gets a job and starts paying for it himself then he can choose. Until then, tough!

I leave for work at 5:30  another reason I didn't get it :)

I could never entertain having one of these either, I'd feel like I had a police officer and a driving instructor in my car all the while.

But in hindsight, if I'd have had one when I passed, it would most likely have helped me avoid winning 6 points on my licence within 3 months of passing and subsequently losing my licence. Then letting the insurance companies pull my pants down for the 5 years I had to declare them. You live and learn!

Reminds me of something I read a few months ago, where a lad had a new corsa with a telematics box fitted and was averaging like a mediocre score of 5/10 for his driving. The car got stolen, and the thief scored 7/10 for the few miles he drove it before stashing it lol the insurance let him keep the good score on his policy too, apparently.

This is one reason why I dislike these systems... who's to say that hard acceleration is "dangerous". Sometimes it's safer to stick your foot down and accelerate like when joining a motorway.

But it looks like you've been going over the speed limit too? Which is a bit stupid to do knowing you have a black box fitted.

And as above... you have had your insurance cancelled which may affect future insurance premiums.

One of the standard questions is "have you ever had a policy cancelled" - and they can check !! No doubt it will help them to load a policy price.

I am too old for these black box things now so I doubt it would make any difference - I would suggest the best plan is to take the hit on cost early on then build a decent no claims amount and protect it -

"But in hindsight, if I'd have had one when I passed, it would most likely have helped me avoid WINNING 6 points on my licence"

Hahahahhaha!

'Winnnnnning!'

My exact plan, paying only an additional £200 pound to not have one fitted, there was no way I was going to save £200, but have a box in my car that fined me every time I had to escape the 'not so happy to find a lad with their daughter' parents.

My first year of insurance, third party fire and theft, at the age of 17, on a ten year old 1.1 Peugeot 206... Was £3400. Hence why I wasn't going to be kept under curfew and fined for (trying to) accelerate hard for £3200.

One year no claims gave me a 59% discount on the first year.

Lots of bad feedback....

I don't think a Vrs is a good car to have it on as acceleration is quite good even standard and without pushing it.

It does make young drivers stick to the speed limits and avoid crazy driving a which is a good thing.

I worked nights from 10pm to 6am with it fitted and they never had an issue with that, they said they knew the car was stationary so it wouldn't be a problem

What made them cancel it was from when i was stuck behind a bus for about 10 minutes and finally had a chance to overtake it, i had to put my foot down in 3rd but stayed within the speed limit (2-3mph over at most) and that came up as dangerous acceleration

Before that it was a few days after i had the box fitted, i forgot it was there and may have rolled to 80mph down hill, my own fault and i have been careful since then.. but this overtake one was just stupid

Interesting read thanks - Having once been in a position where I had the choices of:-

1) Accelerate full throttle to complete passing a truck (max length artic and I was level with the drive axle)

2) Brake hard in the overtaking lane to try and lose 5 times the distance I had to make up to complete the pass.

I'm now convinced that these things are dangerous in and of themselves.

When my lad starts driving, would defo consider one of these until he has 12 months road experience.

Not trying to sound old but the current motoring road user isn't what it used to be even 10 years ago...

I wouldn't bother with a black box as it can cause more trouble than it's worth but what I would advise is going to something like pass plus or institute of advanced motorists

The car isn't at fault here - poor driving is. I'm sure you could achieve the same result in a 1.1 106 if you drove like a total tool.

I remember a friend had this on his first car, and took it to a house party. He then found he was blocking someone's drive in, and I think he said they either pushed it, or someone sober drove it up the road out of the way, and he got fined as it was after 2300. That alone would put me off, as the car wasn't even driven. It also prevents other people from driving it, even if they have 3rd party cover on another car.

That said, if I was gifted a car/insurance, I'm sure I'd happily live with the limitation!

I think the Ford MyDrive/MyKey or whatever it's called is a good idea for this application.

I ain't blaming it on the car, thread title was just a joke

I've had 2 of these boxes in the past and had no issues before, even when i first started driving and drove like a tool at times, this certain insurer just seems to pick up on every little thing and use it against you

Hey mate, I was gonna reply with some precocious toss about "serve's you right; steer clear (pardon the pun) of this type of insurance etc. etc." but I thought the better of it after reading yr later replies....and after getting lashed by the judge for speeding myself - I've got no legs to stand on  :dull:  Hope you manage to get some decent quotes.

Feeling smug 'tho as i'm one of the old gits/coffin-dodgers among you.   Try navigating quotes method on the link below.  I've still managed to get fully comp. quotes under £200 PLUS cashback.

Hope this helps.
