Improving light output on H7 bulbs

Featured Replies

With the winter months fastly approaching, I feel I need to do as many have done on here and improve the light output on my Jan 07 Octy.

In the past I have steered away from HID kits, purely from the chavvy blue look and also blinding other drivers scenario.

HID kits have improved over the years and with the correct fitting and the fact the Octy has projection style and not reflective headlights, I may get some of these..

Have looked at this kit on the bay

Would I have any issue fitting these?

Are they easy to fit generally?

I take it no Canbus issues on a early 07 car.

Thanks in advance.

  • 2 x £15.99 - that IS cheap.  At that price, not much more than uprated bulbs, could be worth a punt if actually compatible with your car.  I'm sure others will be along to answer that for you.

+1 for what is said here.

Far better if possible to go for the 35W kit and code with VCDS when fitting.

Yes the kit the OP mentions is cheap, but for what reason?

I have one of the Londoncolour kits in each of my Octavias and can truly said that I cannot fault them. One kit has been in use for 5 years now (cost me nearly £60 back then!) but it's still going strong, and that's with dipped beam on all the time as Scandinavian DRLs too.

For the sake of an extra tenner, go with London colour.

+1  What mike said.

Due to the projector lights fitted to the mkII I found there is a pronounced cut off to the beams compared to my old mkI. The lights in the mkII are better though. I fitted some Osram night breakers and found they give a noticeable improvement to the lights.

I've had the London color kit in for about 10 months and they are reliable system, a great improvement, the 35W version is definitely bright enough!

Plus the thin ballasts supplied will fit inside the headlight unit.

I've had the Londoncolour HID's in for about 4 years and have to agree with all the others, a great product at a very good price.

Paddypaws mentioned that the whole thing fits inside the headlamp shell which is neat. No extra wires or mounting anything.

Those that know about these things recommend a non canbus version and have your coding adjusted to suit. A brief task for a VCDS jockey.

Thanks for all the replies, I will get the London Colour ones then.

I did consider the Nightbreaker bulbs too (£15 typically) but as they are projector and not reflector, I will go with some HIDS.

With coding in VCDS, does that stop a bulb warning light?

Yes it stops the warning light. The 4700k ones are a nice white light not 'chavvy blue'. (roughly the same colour emitted by domestic Black and White tube TVs, if you're old enough to have seen a B&W TV!).

Sorry a made a mistake mine are 4300k as well not 4700k.

Thanks guys.

I ordered and asked for the 6000k which may have been a mistake. I'll see what they are like and order 4300 if too blue.

IMO I think that may be a mistake yes.

They will be quite blue and actually have a lower light output than 4300k.

Phil

6k are too blue.

I have had the 5k kit in my fist vRS

4300 in my second one

and went back to 5k in this one as I personally find the 5k to be the better choice.

Again, this could be personal to my eyesight.

Mmm, I'll just have to get 4300 bulbs if they are too bad. Only a rennet from same supplier so not end of world.

Thanks for the help. Just need to sort coding now.

Which ones best match the DRL's / OEM Xenon look?

4300k or 5000k?

4300k it is then. Can't really grumble at £25

Are these plug and play?  No need for extra wiring, or cutting holes in the rear headlight cover?

I have a '11 vRS - would I need to code out the bulb waring in VCDS?

That was my next question.

Fitting them in!

Where is the best place to put/mount/attach the metal igniter boxes on the Octy2?

It looks like I'll have to trim out a piece in the rear bulb holder cover to get the wires through or I'll be trapping them which can't be good. Will also let water in.

I started going at the near side one this evening but I was hot and lost my temper as I dropped the bulb retainer clip down underneath the headlamp and had to remove the air intake out to get to it properly!

Then I broke the headlamp plastic bolt, so I'll have to order a few of those in!

This is why I'm not a mechanic!!!!

On the plus side, very speedy delivery from London colour and the kit seems sturdy.

Everything fits inside the headlamp unit.

Also

on the 11 octy you will have to code to suit.

Ahh I was hoping that would be the case but didn't know if the metal ballast box got hot.

Well fitted tonight but the HIDS shut off when applying the high beam. Apparently it needs a relay?

Seems a lot of faff.

Any fast fixes?

  • Author

Nope lol? What's VCDS?

  • Author

Oh and the near side sidelight isn't working either
