Warning Light?

Featured Replies

Howdy.

So the Triangle with apostrophe warning light has come on 3 times now, when I start the engine.  I generally just turn it off and turn it back on again.  Today however, it came up when I stopped at the boom gate on an underground carpark.

According to the manual it's some sort of fault, but it won't show the fault again, just the warning symbol.  Any ideas how I can find out what's wrong?

Cheers.

Press 'Car' on the infotainment, or scroll through to 'Vehicle' on the maxi-dot and it should tell you what the light is for.

The only time I've ever seen mine is for the washer fluid, but it could be a number of things.

Tried the "Car" on infotainment, no message, nothing... I will try vehicle on the maxi dot tommorrow.....

Thanks for reply.

Check the screenwash manually. These cars can drink it like the 6 o'clock swill, particularly if the headlight washers are fitted.

Hmmm you would think it'll tell me that somewhere, but then I must check the maxi dot. I have been pumping the windscreen wash a lot lately, yes I have the headlight washer.

Has always  just been washer fluid with that one for me. I spend more money on screenwash than I do on petrol since getting this car. Bloody tree sap.

oh bugger it's been over a month since I posted, just haven't had time to post, sorry guys...

I don't seem to get that warning without a message anymore, have filling up the wiper fluid, now I get "Check right dipped head light beam", bugger, haven't had a chance to go up to the dealer yet.

the screen wash comes up in the main maxidot, and will reflash, however as with mine iv had the triangle, and if your not quick the message whats not right vanishes,it comes up where your trip mile recorder is, mine was to do with the lights, had to have a new ecu for them,it will have stored a fault if you take it in

Try checking your engine oil level. I had that warning triangle and that is what it was...

I don't understand why people need to guess what the warning light is for?

Did something change in the recent model year?

On my car you can read the assosiated warning message on the infortainment & maxi-dot "Vehicle Information" menu.

Most common causes are low fuel, washer fluid & the TPMS twice a year when I forget to reset it after swapping the tyres.

^^^ This. Turn on ignition and head unit (ignition MUST be on). Select CAR>Vehicle status. Any issues are listed there.

The Fabia also lists them in the Maxi Dot- hit back until you get to the page where you can select between 'Audio', 'Driving Data', 'Assistance Systems', and 'Vehicle Information' and select the last one. I think that's what it's called anyway!

thanks for the replies but i did know what the warning was for.

the problem i had was that the washer bottle looked full and the warning was still on.

but today in proper daylight i found out what was wrong.  the washer was not actually full. the filter on the resevoire neck was full of "gunk" so the water i was pouring in was not actually going in to the bottle. i was using a funnel to fill it so hadnt noticed. i thought the bottle was full as it was spilling out. My bad. now i have cleaned the filter, not sure how it has got gunked up as the car is only 7 months old but there you go!

sorted. :x

I had my washer filler filter block on my last car. I was lucky as it was daylight I could see the problem.

Stupid question, and sorry to hijack original post..... but without going home and reading the manual, what does everyone top up the washer fluid with?

Is there a "special" additive to use with normal water, or just any old washer fluid that you can buy at any car-parts stores?  Or is it like the engine oil and has to be a specific VW-spec product?

Car is 2 months old - I don't want to affect any stupid warranty conditions based on something simple like washer fluid.

I use the VW stuff, mainly because I've had two bottles left in the car from services. Neat it'll go down to -70°C (which I find odd as I'm fairly are my car wouldn't even start at that temp, but hey at least I'd have a clean windscreen) but I dilute it. About 100ml per full refill of the washer bottle. Seems to be fine.

You live in Brisbane, Australia. plain tap water will be fine but if you need to add a little bit more oomph to the cleansing then any commercial car windscreen detergent additive will do the job. My wife likes the smell for the 'official Skoda' stuff though.

Most Briskoda questions related to washer additives are from Europeans wanting to prevent freezing in winter, so not relevant in your case unless you visit the snow down south in our winter.

I'd recommend using maybe 10% mix of something in the water even in Brisbane Aus. Stagnant plain water from car washer bottles has been implicated in outbreaks of illnesses that are carried in water mists, such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legionnaires%27_disease . Most, if not all, liquid screenwash products have anti-bacterial properties.

While quite possible I'd think the risks would be very low I have never been aware of any public warning issued here.

Especially rare if you have Xenons fitted and the associated water turnover :)

Something to be aware of though I guess.

I live in Adelaide and the tap water is pretty average tasting so I have a reverse osmosis water filter fitted. Almost as pure as distilled water, so in a windscreen washer leaves less streaks and cannot stagnate.

Just avoid putting ordinary dishwashing liquid in though as it is a bit too alkaline, and not a good idea to wash the car with either.

Ok, since we're doing this:-

I agree that this is a rare infection vector (and actually most likely to affect the driver) but the stuff I use mixed 10/1 costs ~GB£0.30/litre. I have headlight washers and reckon to use about 5l a year.

I agree about not using dishwashing liquid, because not only is alkaline, it also contains salt which can micro-scratch glass and paint, and can dry out and set on the washer jets!

That seems to be a very weak solution you are making up??? At a guess the system holds at least 4 litres so you are using a concentration of 1 in 40????

The recommended levels are 1 in 2 (i.e. 1 litre of concentrate to 2 litres of water)  to take you down to -16 degrees from recollection....??? Feel free to correct me if my maths don't add up! (Based on the poster's location of Dunfermline as opposed to those in Australia where this might be a reasonable dilution rate).

I use the pongy Lidl stuff which is good for -70C undiluted and said to be ok for our fan type washer jets. Summer time I use 10% and winter 25%. I always use a gallon bottle to pre mix before topping up.

Oh yeah, for sure it's weak. But it works fine so I've gone with it. It was just what I do, not what is recommended.

Thanks guys for responses.

Yep, I'm in Brisbane and don't need additive for anti-freezing properties.... and I'd NEVER even consider using normal household detergents in my car... do people actually do that???

Mainly asked for warranty purposes..... don't want any issues with paintwork or otherwise being affected by improper chemicals (or lack of) in the washer fluids.

I do have the headlight washers too, but I've only seen them activate twice so far, as most of my windscreen cleaning I do at the servo.
