  • Managed to get to a track, drive around without breaking anything, and drive back!   Car performed faultlessly and it was a real hoot. Track was wet so was sliding around everywhere but it was fun.

  • ^^^^ you've installed it wrong :P

  • Ibiza 1.8T internals into the Fabia??

I dare not leave the engine on long enough to stick my head near it, sounds more like a loud knock rather than lots of little knocks like you'd get from the top end, maybe?

So cam cover off and take a look there first?

Cam turns twice for every turn of crank

Sure the timing hasn't slipped?

Would that make it stop solid at a certain point in the stroke? Not sure what else I can check until I can get past that point, not good to turn the engine backwards is it?

Could be something stopping the fly wheel from moving any further I suppose? Uch gearbox out is a bugger :(

Could be if the valve is pushed down and into the piston at that point,

Cousins 1.6 zetec cambelt went, he threw the belt back on to see if he was lucky but couldn't turn it over by hand after hitting a point. He did turn it backwards then cranked it.

It would turn over because the crank had momentum.

Sounds familiar to me. :( no chance you can take the covers off to check the timing is still correct?

Does it have vvt?

If the valve is closed I'll be able to see this with the rocker cover off, so easy to check.

Hmm I'll turn it backwards tomorrow, take off the covers and check the timing.

Don't turn it backwards as you can then introduce slack into the belt system, Ohh I suppose if it's coming off its not going to do any more damafe

Well it won't turn forwards from where it is now :(

I am tired atm but if let's say its 50 teeth at a certain position it doesn't matter if you turn it backwards as long as the timing doesn't slip.

just a stab in the dark, tried turning it over with the clutch disengaged?

That's the theory I think, you just need to make sure when you put the belt on the slack is all on the side that the tensioner is so that when you pull the pin on the tensioner it doesn't knock the timing out.

The knock was present with the clutch disengaged as I moved the car back 6m or so on to the level so I could work on it. But I will try and turn it tomorrow with someone operating the clutch.

Really hope I can find the problem or its going to drive me nuts :(

Got the engine mounts etc off, timing is off looking at the TDC mark on the pully's. I never checked it with the pullys, used the fly before as when the engine was out it was easy enough, not so easy now.

Removed the timing belt, moved the pistons out of the way, tried to manually turn the cam to get it back to TDC and it stops solid :(

  • Author

Hmm ok the cams will move just needed a little more force than I was originally applying. Got the crank to the position where it stops (looked down to see the piston in same place as before), moved the cams on 1/4 of a turn, crank won't move any further.

So that leaves either something other than a valve that the piston is hitting or there is something wrong with the flywheel/clutch side, right?

Put a magnet on a rod down each spark plug hole see if it picks any debris? If it does then that's your problem

Yep did think of that last night but don't have anything suitable.

Think a cuppa, tidy up all my tools and then walk in to town is in order to get reamed by Halfords.

Any magnetic screwdrivers?

Any magnetic screwdrivers?

Tried but they are not very powerful.

ive been looking at getting a cheap USB Endoscope.

A guy at work bought one off ebay for £10 or so, had a 10mm diameter so easily fitted in a spark plug hole. Good bit of kit and ive been looking at getting one for ages.

Shame about the timing Dan :/ hopefully it hasnt caused too much damage and youll have it back on the road in no time!

Hope you get it sorted soon Dan!

I think the timing is a symptom, not the cause. Did 100miles fine since the timing belt change and lots of idling time checking things over.

Gearbox is off at the moment, looking at getting the flywheel off... but that threadlock stuff is bloody good. Just can't get good purchase on the bolt with a lever long enough :( I'm exhausted to be honest. If the fly comes off and its still hitting that same spot and stopping (I marked the crank where it stops, spun it all the way until it stops again and its 10deg off the first place it stops) then the head comes off :(

Oh and after a 6mile walk to Halfords and back the magnet thing is too big. Broke it open and put the magnet on something else, didn't catch any fish though.

so do you reckon a loose nut/screw has jammed a valve and then the piston has hit it?

  • Author

Looking more likely now, flywheel is off, still stops in the exact same spot.

Will take the head off tomorrow, no reason not to now its not going back on the road tomorrow so no need to worry about not being able to get hold of replacement parts.

If its a lose screw/nut I'm breaking it and leasing myself something, not fit to work on a car :(

mistakes happen, you have done alot of work, would be a shame to waste it all.

itss only when you make the same mistake twice its a problem

  • Author

Well its a mistake on top of a mistake, if something got in there it would have been when I took the TB off.

After the head comes off tomorrow I may just take the rest of the engine out, and decide what to do next.

You might be lucky,

Had a combo knocking like a ******, killed the engine recovered it and a nut had wedged under the camshaft

Well it looks like I need a special uber long bit to get the head bolts out on this engine like these:

So puts a stop on things!

So will need to put it on its wheels and get it in to the garage for safe keeping.
