  • Managed to get to a track, drive around without breaking anything, and drive back!   Car performed faultlessly and it was a real hoot. Track was wet so was sliding around everywhere but it was fun.

  • ^^^^ you've installed it wrong :P

  • Ibiza 1.8T internals into the Fabia??

Not sure... says later 1.8Ts have the square looking ones. That's what new OEM bolts would have.

I have the bits, but not that long. I assume they are like this as the hole isn't big enough to take an extension/holder? Will give it a try.

Ok gearbox back on now starting to take off the head.

I removed the pipe from the turbo going to the intercooler and it is covered in oil inside - these are brand new pipes and I have a catch can so no PCV crap.

Removed the pipe from the 'in' side of the intercooler and its clean, even though its just a few ft of pipe away.

So if the turbo is faulty/has exploded, could that have bent the exhaust valves thus creating the knocking/inability to turn the engine fully? Going to crack on...

any oil in the intercooler?

On my vrs I had about a litre of oil after the turbo failed.

But Surely any turbo debris would have been caught in the intercooler anyway?

Nope intercooler is clean! Very odd!

Anyway, can't get the head off without the uber long bits. Turbo is mostly unbolted but I gave up as it will just be easier to remove it once the head is out of the way.

the intake valves look fine from what I can see looking from the top after removing the manifold.

There was oil in the old intercooler etc so maybe this turbo just leaks oil? Hard to tell, may have just been PCV oil. Guess I'll need to get it checked when its off and if it is leaking replace/recondition, as it probably wouldn't last long with a stage 2 map if its dicky.

Edit to add: the coolant drained from the rad/drain hole was all orange and skanky, but the coolant drained from the block (via the turbo coolant feed) was bright pink.

Until I can get the dam head off its all guesses :(

Whats the Foxy one doing with that Polo engine Taylor? :p

Got an AUQ lump in Devon :P

Thanks, but I'll pass, don't fancy another swap of that magnitude!

I was really hoping this engine would last given its on 45k.

Anyway, need to get the head off before I go sulking and throwing the engine out with the used oil...

Is it the original engine from the car?

No idea... write off didn't come with paperwork!

Any news?

Waiting for the bits I need to remove the head. Probably won't be here until next week.

I've got this set you can borrow if needed? Although even the longest ones in this set (7cm) don't look long enough compared to your previous picture.

I'm just on the other side of halifax.

Probably about right on the clearance but they look like spline + torx. Torx can be used to get the Ribe head bolts out but you risk breaking them and ending up with bits stuck. Early 1.8Ts had M10 spline bolts which your set would remove! Typical annoying VW!

Thanks for the offer though. :)

Won't be making it to Combe in any case now.

It's awaiting me getting spare time to do something interesting with it...

Seem to have quite a bit on at the moment! :peek:

So not available for sale unfortunately.

Might be once the Yeti is done and I'm merrily wizzing about in it though.

Ordered last Monday, but not dispatched until Friday, the tool for the head bolts finally arrived today (after attempts on Saturday/Sunday). I dared not cancel to upgrade the delivery from free when I saw the expected date as I got the last one on Amazon (now 3-5 weeks lead time). Oddly enough it arrived with something I ordered yesterday on free delivery!

So tonight the head comes off and I can see what damage has been done.

The more I think/rationalize this, the more I think its an expensive lesson in not reusing non-OE cambelt tensioner dampeners. Thankfully it happened at 800rpm!

While the head is off, anyone know much about the benefits of porting/polishing on the 1.8t? Primarily thinking the exhaust ports. While its off and at the workshop it would seem rude not to if it gains anything.

Fingers crossed the pistons are ok!

Hope its not too bad Dan! I wouldn't spend your money on porting out the head. They flow well enough, you'd be better to save the money to spend monies on a k04 set up.

Are you still trying to sell your K04? :p

I hope its not too bad either :( Eager to find out... if my opposite number at work wasn't off I'd be at home now doing it. Found a workshop in Leeds that can do the rebuild, hopefully he doesn't have too many jobs on and I won't have to wait too long.

Haha no, that went many moons ago! I just think flowing the head comes maybe at a time when you've pushed the engine as hard as you can. Which you won't do with your blower (or a standard k04)

Look forward to hopefully seeing some good news pics later

Wanted... New engine!

Looks like head + pistons to me.

Been following your progress.... Gutted for you :(

Ouch! What's that bolt thread that's done the damage?

Fark, what's happened there mate, similar to the combo issue I had just managed to get further down the engine. Absolutely gutted

Offcut of the bolt I used to block the hole on the BJX TB. I cut it off in the garage, but it must have stuck to my clothes (guessing hot bolt + fleece = melty sticky) and ended up in the cooler piping or intake I recon as I was working outside on the car. Its an old bolt I reused from my pot and had that green corrosion OE bolts get.

Had the bright idea of fitting the TB off the spare manifold as that has a proper connector still and is easy to block off... too late though.

Recon that piston is shot?

  • Author

Oh and on the head pic the bolt offcut is still there, far right. Had to pull it off with pliers.
