  • Managed to get to a track, drive around without breaking anything, and drive back!   Car performed faultlessly and it was a real hoot. Track was wet so was sliding around everywhere but it was fun.

  • ^^^^ you've installed it wrong :P

  • Ibiza 1.8T internals into the Fabia??

On the wheels?

On the wheels?

Yep

Not my cup of tea either I'm afraid.

Yeah 16" trims just look too big on a small car, all that solid expanse of silver.

Shame the alloys I bought don't fit... turned out to be 5x112 despite being advertised as fitting a Bora. Oh well, they were very cheap :P

I have those octy elegance rims with new rubber for sale ;)

Just read all this thread. Very good work.

I may have a few questions when i start mine ;-)

I like these but sadly don't need the rubber. Am after some that need a refurb ideally so I can get them done a tad darker than standard silver.

Don't do it! They are getting common :(

But still be fun [emoji106]

Fair enough dude I know what you mean tho

But still be fun

Yeah it is :) Until you break it :( But then you fix it... :) and then its broken again :( But oh wait its fixed again :)

Before this the biggest job I'd done on a car was upgrading brake calipers on my Celica. Was good to do all this stuff for the first time on a car I didn't need for work.

Exactly what i want.. A project that looks reasonable for someone with a bit of mechanical knowledge. I've just, litrally walked through the door after picking up my donor car. Need to fix it before stripping it though. [emoji3]

What did you get? Ibiza or something else?

Finally got around to fitting a resistor on the EVAP wires that were dangling in the engine bay so finally no EML... well for now. A scan reveled that as well as the A/C warning (not EML worthy), EVAP warning (dealt with) I had a 'Knock Sensor 2: Signal too high'. Sadly as my EML has been on forever due to the EVAP's disappearance I have no idea when this code occurred (why can't these things be logged properly with time stamps?!) or with what frequency. Hopefully by keeping an eye out for it I can get some clue as to the cause. Could be something simple but sadly to investigate the inlet manifold needs to come off :(

Ibiza FR..

I scanned it when i got it home and it had knock sensor 2 fault. It could be anything that has caused a high vibration according to ross tech fault codes.

So I finally did my DIY smoke test.

You'll need:

A fairly large bucket with a lid. I found several on amazon from catering suppliers but didn't want to wait for delivery. I got one from B&Q in the end and as a bonus it came full of chicken poop for the garden. £8 something but I'm calling it £0 as I use the poop on the garden anyway :P

A car tyre valve or you could cut one from an old bike inner tube. £3 for 10 from Amazon. The other 9 will be used when the tyre place decides to try and charge me £2.50 for a valve :P

A hose pipe connector designed to attach to a butt or something. Not really sure what they are called but I had a few about in the garage. About £2.50 from wilco.

A length of hose pipe and some adapters or offcuts of pipe to get you to the size of your inlet. Remember its not a pressure test, so it doesn't need to stand up to a heap of pressure.

Tools... a drill mainly for cutting holes and maybe something to measure so you get the holes the right size.

A bike pump or ideally a portable electric type.

Assemble like so:

I then attached the blue bit to the TIP where the pipe from my recirc dump valve connects. I removed the MAF and blocked the end of the TIP with a glove and some tape. I then removed a vac pipe from the inlet manifold. Connected the air source and off it went.

Oh I missed something... you need some incense sticks... I used 8 to get a decent amount of smoke and these were proper ones from HK with infused cancer and stuff not your Kite Mark Health and Safety scented nonsense. I drilled a hole in some wood and stuck 'em in. Obviously be careful with fire and stuff...

So once I had it running I waited for smoke to come out the vac connection and stuck my finger over it. Then used a small LED torch to hunt for smoke. Occasionally I released the pressure because otherwise the lid came off the bucket. I did a final test with the vac pipe back on to look for leaks there too.

Found 1 leak in my lower pipe to the intercooler. It wouldn't seal with one clamp which is worrying. Double clamped for now and felt better on the test drive, less lag on upshifts and smoother overall. Hopefully my MPG will increase as its dire right now (on about 220 miles on the current tank and down to 1/6th).

CEL came on again today 10mins in to my commute, my heart sank fearing it was the knock sensor. Read it when I got home... it was along the lines of "SAI Flow Insufficient"... I should think so, its been in the loft for 8 months! ~And the car was up to temp so the pump wouldn't have been running. No idea why now! Redid the TBA and raised the idle by 30 or so RPM to a nice sweet spot.

Exhaust going on next Tuesday and currently looking at mappers. May be taking a chance on a 4th option that isn't R-Tech or Badger5 or Shark... we'll see. Combe isn't that far away so need to get my arse in to gear as I'll probably be looking at lead times for the mapping.

Not entirely convinced...

I can see why, some cheap16" spider etc.. would look better IMO and more OEM.

Yeah I stupidly didn't buy some standard vRS ones that went for £100ish this weekend, would have been a fun drive to Kendal.

I did however buy some Ronal R41s which I'm now having 2nd thoughts on :P

May work in anthracite?

In my opinion, the Fabia doesn't suit thin spokes

Thin 5 spokes to be precise.

But, you never know until they're on the car :)

Whatever wheels you put on it, it'll still be a great car.

Test fit pics will follow on Saturday hopefully :)

Great work. Just read this thread over the last week. Heart sank at post #520. What an ordeal.  Good effort and thanks for sharing.

Bit of a test fit of various wheels, can't really do it on the drive due to the slope so the pictures are not much good:

Some imagination clear required... I'm leaning towards the Ronals for the summer and the Ibiza FR for winter... but I'm not sure if I will still like them if they were all silver and sparkly... the scruffy look quite suits the car :P

Ibiza wheels look good mate, did you get my pm, forgot to give you the centre caps
