Have you booked into Combe yet?

Last time I looked there were only two spots left for track time...

Booked in to Clubstand already

  • Managed to get to a track, drive around without breaking anything, and drive back!   Car performed faultlessly and it was a real hoot. Track was wet so was sliding around everywhere but it was fun.

  • ^^^^ you've installed it wrong :P

  • Ibiza 1.8T internals into the Fabia??

1.8t Fabia driver watching from the sidelines = :(

I don't think its a good idea to push my luck, it will be good if it gets to Combe and back without a hitch. I'm not sure if it will be mapped by then, need to see what I can sort out with Ben regarding an exhaust, may be that I get it mapped on Friday on the way down... then maybe I'll vulture up a slot on track if someone drops out :)

First things first... gotta get it on the road and I don't have any minions to help :P

Minions. :D

Minions to help? .....

More like Minions to do 90% of the work :p

Really, 10% of the work can be done with a hammer?

10% can be completed with an angle grinder or bolt cutters haha

And who is using minions to get thibgs done now ;)

Keep up the work dan, I look forward To seeing this at combe

Angle grinder...

You can do it Dan! Just set yourself some time tables in order to accomplish, at worst you'd be a spectator or you can get a few laps just to see how it runs. Just because you running laps doesn't mean you have to tear the a$$ off it to start with. :D

Why didn't anyone tell me this before I diced up Taylor :P

Brakes are on in a fashion. The bolts supplied with the HEL lines are wrong so I need to sort that out or order some stainless ones. Didn't bother painting them just cleaned off the flaking paint and greased up the sliders. No one can see them anyway and it fits in with the sleeper ethos. May buy a full set of calipers and get them refurbed if I decide to go with some nice lightweight alloys (still on the cards).

Lots of random bits and bobs done, nothing terribly exciting.

The main things now left are the electrics and securing things... but really that's it! Of course I haven't actually tested whether the engine can move the car yet...

Very little progress made recently, fitted a speaker last weekend and that was it, been to cold for wiring up and doing little bits where little physical effort is required.

Had an attempt at doing the ABS bleed however the ABS wasn't talking the same language as it should have been and I was getting 'Group not available' when I tried to do the bleed. So I grabbed the one from the Ibiza out the loft, plugged that in and VCDS was happy. I wasn't... swapping that thing is a bugger of a job. I hate brake fluid. I'm sure it would have been possible to make the pump from the Fabia talk Ibiza, but the Ibiza one is 50k miles younger so it may as well go on. Should have done it before. The brakes are bled however I'm not convinced its all void of air but it will do for now and I'll do it again when I can get it outside and move around the car a little easier.

Back on its wheels tomorrow and we'll see if it will move :)

And we have movement!

Few issues discovered yesterday that I need to address

1. Handbrake doesn't work on one caliper. Lever moves all the way down to the stop but does nothing.

2. Unlock car, open door, throw keys in, close door. Car then locks its self as if the door as not been opened.

3. Brakes feel really spongy.

4. Think I'm missing some clips that hold the selector cables in place on top of the gear box. Bodged with cable ties to get the gears to work properly. Anyone got a close up of this area? Where the outer sheath of the selector cable threads through the mount on the gear box what keeps it there?

5. Tool boxes do not make good driving seats.

Hope to see this driving around soon!

I'm a step closer now! Insurance quote came through today, very happy with the rise (yes its still a rise, but not nearly as much as I thought it would be!).

So, DVLA and engine swaps! I sent off the V5 in anticipation around a month ago, and so far have received nothing in return. I'm getting nervous that the reply is going to come back in the form of "You need to provide xyz to prove it".

Now as long as I get a usable V5 back that I can tax the car with, I'll go ahead and tax the car under the guise of a 1.4 and sort the engine swap out later otherwise I'll not be able to put it on the road.

Anyone have any experience with the DVLA and driveway engine swaps? I have a copy of the V5 form the Ibiza, thinking I may just respond with "I took the engine out of this car which was mine and I'm sure you can now see is scrapped", and hope for the best.

As predicted, DVLA want x, y or z before doing the engine details change. Annoyingly they have kept the V5 in the mean time.

Bloody bureaucrats.

Pick one:

receipt for the engine from a garage

inspection report e.g. AA/RAC

inspection report for insurance purposes

written confirmation from manufacturer

Of if I say it was in there when I got the car:

written confirmation from the garage that did the conversion

written confirmation of change from independent garage

I wrote back saying:

Please could the V5 for the car listed above be returned so that I can tax the car?

Unfortunately at this time the evidence requested is not available, until such a time as the car is on the road I'm unable to get an independent inspection to confirm the engine details.

The engine was retrieved from a car which I previously owned (REG NUM) which has now been scrapped so there is no receipt for the purchase of the engine. The conversion was carried out by myself not a garage so there is no receipt for the work carried out on the conversion.

I will be VERY annoyed if the 1st of April comes and I can't tax it! Its looking like it will be a phone job at the moment :(

In other news, locking issues (car locking after door had been opened) solved by fitting Ibiza door looms. Had to fit Fabia plugs for the windows/locking switch but it was straight forward :)

When I did the mongrel all I had to do was visit a local DVLA place so they could confirm engine number and get V5 updated.  They must have got worse recently, what with I guess the closure of local DVLA offices and beaurocracy.  It was 2005 I did mine though,

I actually never got round to mine but I will be doing this time round after I've done this lot of work, I may even need a sva test for mine :/

Yep a quick Google suggests that was the best way to do it :(

Oh well... will see what they say. Trying to be legit always bites you in the arse in this country.
