Changing from variable to fixed servicing

Featured Replies

Brian the Service Schedule is at 40,000 miles, and your plugs might be fine, but i would recommend that you have them replaced now.

(you do not have to, but it is safest to.  if you do ask them for the Spark Plugs removed, it would be good to see how they look.)

A new Air Filter as well. if it is not already replaced, & this is a Major / Inspection Service, so it is a new Pollen Filter as well.

I take it the Brake Fluid was changed last Year at 3 Years Old.

They can activate your oil Temperature Again.

At the age your car is, it was never originally a Variable Service Schedule, but later they were changed to that.

As long as they had 5 w 30 VW 504 00 they were OK for over the 9,400 mile / annual Fixed Servicing.

George - yes, new pollen and air filters -

http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/service-and-maintenance/national-pricing/servicing/

Not sure what to do about the spark plugs, will ask the dealer's advice, but I'm an if-it-ain't-broken -don't fix it kinda guy...:) .

Brake fluid and air con were done at the last service.

It seems a lot of the chaps with spark plug problems have run their card on 95 - mine has been strictly 99 in the three years of ownership.

It has been serviced every 12 months from new at a Skoda dealer (Parks years one and two, Hennys for the third) - 5w30 to the correct spec.

It's slowly breaking down over time! Whack a new set in for the cost of them :)

Muchos?

Got my insurance down to 200 quid this year, which is under what I expected to pay, so probably go for it. The technicians at Henrys are pretty good - certainly trust them far more than Parks.

Sorry! Should have read 'strictly 99'.

Sorry! Should have read 'strictly 99'.

Ahh that's better :) it's always good to find a garage with trust worthy techs!

If it aint broke dont fix it is OK.

But with the Spark Plugs it is the Plug in one particular cylinder that might break or burn the tip without warning & if you feel a Mis-fire or

get a EPC  light

or the Exhaust Control Light,  you get warnings and are lucky.

I have driven cars and it had no noticeable Mis-fire or Lights only not enough power.

Luckily i checked the Plugs and one might well have had a tip break off pretty soon if left in.

That was at 25,000 and run on 97 - 99 RON.

& another car at 17,000 miles, it was run on 95 ron and short trips only.

So if a Tip breaks off, then you will have a possibility of a rather big engine failure.

Car is in today - they change spark plugs anyway at the fourth-year (major) service irrespective of mileage.

Brian, I like your sig lol

  • 1 month later...

Just been reading through this and had my first service today I have got it on service oil change and plugs every year and they put 5w40 in Is that right because some people put 5w30 in

OK to put in 5w 40 VW 502 00 when changing every 9,400 miles (10,000)

Personally i still put in 5w 30 VW 504 00 'Long LIfe' & still change regularly.

It costs more though. But not much more.

Do you mean you are going to pay to have the Spark Plugs changed at each Service?

my garage services with 5W30 but I would rather have 5W40 due to the track work my car does... I top up with 5W40 :) and change every 10k..... 31k now, and I have dome brake fluid, air filter (with pipercross element) , and plugs already :) like to keep ahead of schedule! lol.... but my car does have a hard life ;)

But you did only change the plugs because they showed them selves as failing.

Good & lucky that they did before damage was caused.

Is that oil alright for track days will be going Santa pod and probably do a few track days next year

Either oil is OK.   5w 30 Full Synthetic, VW 504,  or 5w 40 VW 502

But for variable servicing then it needs to be VW 504.

You are not going to be needing to worry about getting Oil very hot for long as Santa Pod.

& the Oil is going to be OK at Track Days, but you could get better than a Dealer puts in at Services,

& it might run a bit cooler an Oil Temp.

Its only a Fabia, and its not like it is a Hot Hatch.

the last number is how it stands up with quality (thickness)  when the temps get high........ i.e 40 is better than 30 IF you are going to push it alot :)

just for information the lower number wants to be low to cope with low temp runniness (not too thick) :)

5W40 is ideal in my opinion :)

BUT as Goerge said, at a drag strip you really are not going to push any limits... the whole day spent in an open pit lane on a track day? thats diffferent, you will be running 125C + constantly for that ! :o

  • 2 months later...

Just curious about this oil malarky, what's the difference between 5w30 VW/Audi and any other fully synthetic 5w30 please?

Mine's using a fair bit of oil again and I've read that Comma make the oils for Halfords, but it seems to me that Halfords charge nearly double the price in their own brand bottles!!

Amazon are selling this for £21.49 (not sure if I was allowed to post a direct link) and I was tempted to but this?

Comma XTC5L 5L XTech Fully Synthetic 5W30 Motor Oil

Thanks in advance :-)

Comma do a very good '5w 30' Full Synthetic to VW 504 00 spec

Do not get tied up on who say who 'Makes oil'

the Oil is Produced by some very good Oil Producers.

Asda & Tesco '5w 30' VW 504 00  or '5w 40' VW 502 00 for Fixed Servicing & it is not produced in some ones shed.

BE SURE YOU GET 'FULL SYNTHETIC' to 5w 30  for Variable or Fixed Servicing, (VW 504)

or 5w 40 FULL SYNTHETIC if changing ever 10,000 or less is OK.

So, will this be ok? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Comma-XTC5L-XTech-Fully-Synthetic/dp/B002RPMQIK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422696783&sr=8-1&keywords=comma+5w+30

Sorry i can not see the Application for that.

The COMMA i get is X-Flow 5w 30 which is to VW 504  VW 507 i seem to remember.

Can you not look in Asda,

They were doing 4 litres of Magnatec 5w - 30 C3 for a good price, i got a few for £16 a time.  & their own stuff is fine.

has lots of quality codes on it, but no VAG codes! I would have thought its ok.

We don't have an Asda here!! I'll have a look online later and see what I can find. I'm popping on here between lessons so apologies for delays in replies :-)

Tesco, Sainsbury, a Local Motor Factors.  all the Oils are OK if to the Correct Spec.

The Mail Order from a reliable supplier is OK.

The Mobile 1 a 'Friend' gave me was not, it was the correct sealed bottle, just not genuine oil,  as i found out rather quickly.
