MDI - what's the crack

Featured Replies

Ok, I've got a Rapid TSI, which has the usb/aux under the maxidot radio on the centre console. I have a ipod touch and a Galaxy S4.

I plug either of these devices directly into the usb set it to MDI and I constantly get MDI not supported.

I've taken it to Skoda who had it for two days!!! And then fobbed me off saying that the USB port is only for charging and I have to run it through Bluetooth, where the manual specifically states it's for audio playback. They tried to get me to just use aux, or just use bluetooth. But the whole point was to be able to just plug it in and go and be able to skip tracks on the maxidot and not have to look at my device and end up in a ditch.

It's as if they don't know, skoda don't seem to know, so I'll take it to the real experts. Help? What's your experience with the MDI

No Eddie, I have the USB and Aux on the centre console. Tucked away under the radio/aircon controls etc.

Haha, really? How come it took Skoda 2 days to tell me that? Jesus. They even rang me up on the first day to say they were ordering an 'MDI cable' and apparently that yielded the same results. I was genuinely of the belief, as were they that the MDI port was just moved from the glove. I feel stupid now. :(

Beyond the basics (and sometimes not even then) most dealers are utterly useless.

Yes, good dealers are hard to come by.

I'd suggest putting the music on a USB and plugging it in, as stated above.

The Rapid is based on the mk2 Fabia in terms of it's infotainment and interior tech, so it's a little old even though it's a new model.

Apparently on the website you've all provided me with, it says the Bluetooth phone can be used just with voice... How the bloomin' eck do I set that/activate that?

if it is enabled

there is a mic symbol on the mfsw, and that should allow you to use voice commands to dial contacts

also on the head unit there is a mic symbol in the phone

above is for the RNS315

Voice will only work if you have a MFSW [emoji57]

You can use the mic button on the radio too

Don't have MFSW and just have the standard radio. Phones operated purely by the stalk. :( never mind. Thinking about buying a RNS510 head unit anyway. :)

Well then that's not the MDI port.

Plug in a USB flash drive with MP3s on it and it'll play them.

MDI is totally seperate.

Actually, I believe that Natalie does have the MDI !

The photo above, although from Skoda's site and supposed to be from a Rapid, is actually not from a Rapid but probably from an Octavia.

All Rapids equipped with MDI, have it in the center console, below the A/C.

Natalie, I'm no expert but I do have the same usb & aux port... I have an iPhone that plays music through the Bluetooth but not the usb ( I also make calls and hear my google sat nav app through the Bluetooth feature). I could have bought an iPod cable that plugs in to the bottom of my phone and then splits in to the usb and 3.5mm jack BUT as per the Bluetooth would not be able to use the radio features to skip tracks. however, what I and many rapid owners have done is buy a large capacity but small in size USB memory stick to which we have put our music collection on. I can still make calls using my phone but also listen to my favourite music :) I currently use a 32gb USB stick...

Here is the USB I use... 32gb and you can hardly tell it's in the slot! I got it from mymemory for £20ish they do have a Sandisk 64gb like the one above for around £25ish... What I've found is as long as the USB is formatted FAT32, files are organised by Album artist and high quality mp3 (not mp4a as I found out the hard way!) then they work a treat! :)

The MDI on my polo came with a USB cable and an APPLE cable. I just plugged in the one I wanted to use.

I suspect Skoda have just hard wired the MDI to the USB socket on the dashboard to save some money in not needing the normal MDI socket setup shown in the photos above.

When we get our rapid, we will just be using USB, so it's quite convenient for us, but I can see the frustration.

There's a 2 into 1 cable you can get that plugs into your phone. Uses aux and mdi together. I've seen it in another thread somewhere.

Correct.

You can do audio playback using MDI/USB, you just need the right cable.

Brilliant thanks, I might get this 2 in 1 cable. :) Thanks for your help!

They're on eBay [emoji106]

They still have that image on the Rapid section of the SUK website? Lol I contacted them when I got my Rapid telling them that the image was wrong and they replied thanking me for pointing it out and that they'd sort it ... epic fail!

A cheap cable off eBay should sort you out for the iPod providing your iPod has the old wide apple connector, I'm not sure the new thunderbolt connector will be compatible even if you found a cable claiming to work.

I'm using an old 4th gen iPod nano at the moment, bluetooth to the phone also works but does not support media control (track selection etc) so is useless to me.

Also, I don't know if you've ordered the cable yet, but don't go with the temptation to buy one of the ones that look a little more slimline, you need the type that looks to be a bit more bulky where the two cables meet in to the one.  I won't bore you with the technical details of why :) but something like this one should do the trick http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-iPod-iPhone-iPad-Y-Cable-USB-to-AUX-Interface-Lead-SU41-UK-/221151080488?pt=UK_MP3_Player_Accessories_Cables_Adapters&hash=item337da1b028

I haven't seen one of these with a lightning connector yet.

Not surprised - Apple appear to have updated the iOS accessory protocol at the same time as the connector change, and them being them, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's not backward compatible. Meaning even if you put a cable together, it probably won't work.

Iphone

This is why I have a Samsung

Unfortunately I have a ipod touch 5th Gen so it's a lightening connection. Dammit. Thanks anyway. :( I'll just get a USB stick it'll be easier all round.
