Can adaptive cruise control be enabled in a car with front assist?

Featured Replies

I have a 1.8 Elegance 4x4 Estate with Front Assist and Cruise Control.

Is there some way to enable Adaptive Cruise Control?

No because you are missing one key component, the front radar sensor which sits behind the front bumper and is not part of the park assist. In addition the system uses a different cruise stalk and different instrument cluster. The radar sensor is in excess of £800 to buy as a replacement part.

OP says they have front assist?

In theory, yes it can be done but you will need a friendly dealer I think to get it activated. It might be possible to do with VCDS or VCP but cars with ACC are like hens teeth in the UK.

I'll have one soon, so might be able to help you out with coding and adaptation changes required, but you will need a new stalk, New steering cowl and probably a loom or two as a minimum.

I asked Skoda this question, and they said it wasnt worth it. Too much extra wiring needed, which would mean taking the car apart. Its something thats designed to be included at build only.

Any sign yet of ACC returning to the UK options list?

Nope - L&K only at this point in time.

Might be worth checking the configurator in 4 weeks or so when BW45 has been and gone - any half model year changes will take place then.

I already have it on mine and value it highly, just hoping that when I come to change in a couple of years that the option reappears, or else I'll have to change marques!

I saw in another thread on here today that ACC is becoming available again. Good news.

I did hint at that a few posts ago  ;)

I'm a bloke, so I don't get subtlety.

I might be able to provide some cross reference here. 63 plate VRS hatch with ACC and I just happen to have VCDS.

I had AAC on my previous car (MK7 Golf)

Its not something I'd specify (it was standard on the Golf), as I found that when I used it there was always some reason it would be more of a hinderance than a help. If the motorway was busy, and I needed to change lanes to overtake, unless I pulled out very early as I caught up with a slower car, the ACC would slow me down just as I was changing lanes, then speed up again once in the lane change was complete. You might find that if you're happily driving along and someone overtakes and pulls in in front of you, sometimes the ACC would slow you down before it realised the car now in front of you was pulling away and then it'd speed up again. In short, on numerous occasions it'd find an unnecessary reason to slow you down before speeding back up again. You might also catch a car in front with its cruise set at say 70, when you're cruise is at 75. You might not notice the ACC slow you by that small amount so it could be a little while before you notice that you weren't travelling at the speed you want. Only time I found it any use was travelling in a long line of A road traffic where there was no point or opportunity to overtake.

Annoyed me more than helped me.

^^^^that makes sense, good call

I only ever use cruise ctrl on the motorway and more often than not i override it as i get bored! :-)

I override normal cruise in a lot of these situations, so just do the same with ACC.

Also, can ACC be set so that it acts like normal cruise control as well when required? Ie doesnt slow you down or speed you up?

When ACC is set, it will slow down when approaching another car. You can adjust the sensitivity so your car will get closer or further before it slows down for the other car.

So in answer to your question, no.

I often use ACC on As and Ms, you can simply override the tendency to slow you down by using the throttle to either stop the slow down or to speed up if you want to overtake slower traffic, once you take your foot off the throttle normal ACC behavior resumes so you get all the benefits of stress free cruising without the frustrations for a simple tickle with the right foot when needed.

Unless its behavior is different from the Octy from the GTi, and would not expect that.

The system in my Audi seems intelligent enough to know that a car that's just overtaken is heading away from me even if it pulls in front.

So does the one in my Octavia.

+1 in a Golf R

Mind blowingly accurate at picking out moving cars from one lane to another :)
