Galaxy Note 3 thinks I'm 1173 miles away from my actual location!

Featured Replies

My Note 3 keeps telling me I'm in Budapest when in fact I'm in Boston, Uk! As such my weather info is incorrect and when in load up my current location on google maps its 1173 miles away in Budapest. Has anyone got any tips on how to fix it?

Can't help you with this sorry but out of interest what's your thoughts on the Note 3??

Thanks

Neil

I didn't realise you could now get Apple Maps on a 'droid phone....

Why Bolton ?

Why Bolton ?

Because I can't read :wall: I meant Boston

I love the Note 3. I've moved from a Galaxy Mega (6.3in screen!!) As it was just too big. That and the screen quality of the note is epic. The note 4 has just been released but the updates were not big enough to justify the extra dosh! Any questions let me know!

Has anyone got any tips on how to fix it?

Start with the basics - have you actually got 'Location' turned on in Settings?

And in locations what settings are you using?

Location settings are on and set to as accurate as they can be (network, WiFi etc) it's only in Boston. Everywhere else is fine it seems.

Use the feedback on the slide out menu and select "send location feedback" when you are in the location causing you issues and the problem is occurring.

Maybe there are a lot of Hungarians in Boston....

I bet it is picking up the location from your ISP rather than GPS.

Yes, does it find the correct location outside with the WIFI turned off (Physically, not just disconnected from WIFI), give it a try.

Android as well as GPS uses known WIFI networks to try and locate itself when indoors, as does iOS. However it can sometimes get it wrong, especially if indoors with no GPS reception and relying on WIFI. Reason being if someone in another location has the same WIFI SSID as you or someone close by then it thinks you are there because that WIFI network is close.

There is a central database of SSIDs collected by others (remember the apple debacle) and the phone refers to this database over 3G / Wifi. the actual setup is difficult to explain.

This is why and how android devices without GPS know where they are, using WIFI alone.

That will be it! Outside with WiFi off its fine. Just seems to be inside work.

Thanks everyone :)

Galaxy Note 3 Neo is even better, stylus like Note 3 but without power sapping FHD screen and with more durable microUSB connector (and slightly smaller dimensions). Far less expensive too if you get it as sim only, though you have to rely on Ebay and similar to buy it, as UK networks shunned Note 3 Neo for more profit on the regular Note 3.

I have had one since June, and after installing Easy Battery Saver, the battery lasts for a week of moderate usage. Plus you can browse "normal" websites comfortably, as the stylus allows for precise input.
