Having to put my car off the road, any further suggestions?

Featured Replies

Due to heart trouble and operation (triple by pass), my car will be off the road for approx 6 weeks, so was I going to lay it up until, a friend mentioned some difficulties in the passing so, now looking for some thoughts on the subject to help me make up my mind.

Have washed, dried, vacuumed, checked all lights and levels, parked in the garage with brakes off, each window open approx 1".

Friend suggests running it at least once a week for at least 15 - 20 miles to let it warm up properly and generally go through a proper heat cycle and then wash dry, etc before parking it for another week, I can get my wife or son to do that for me but it seems like more work than it's worth just from the point of view of getting and keeping it clean. I could start her and run her in the garage and then all I would need to do is re-check the levels etc... Anyone else had to go down this road? Opinions please?

6 weeks! just park her up and take battery off her mine was laid up for 4mths without starting it

I had my Aortic Valve replaced back on 29/11/12 and wasn't able drive for 3 months and just got my missus to take her for a warm up every couple of weeks. Turned over first time, every time and no issues since.

If I hadn't had that option, then I would have drained/used the fuel and pretty much leave it there. Would have been fine IMO and other friends I ran it by.

I hope the op goes well and have a speedy recovery. :)

It's a diesel so fuel isn't an issue, if it's in a garage why don't you just connect it to a maintenance trickle charger, you don't even need to disco the battery, just leave it on charge until you're ready to use it again.

Good luck with the op, lets hope your forum name is apt.

either optimate/trickle charger is possible if not disconnect the battery

At this time of year you should make sure the antifreeze is all right (should anyway really)

i wouldnt bother with starting it at all though - if its just idling it probably wouldnt reach temperature anyway so it might even be counterproductive.

just get sorted mate! i had a double valve transplant in feb this year and i was also driving after 6/7 weeks - my car was sat outside on the drive and was only used once because my dad was desperate for a car!

My missus has been using it for the last two weeks since the operation basically but, with the weather about to take a down turn I had just thought of tucking it away until I was fit to clean it properly again, living on the West Coast of Scotland does mean it gets dirty PDQ, lol. Thanks!

Funnily (sickly) enough that's how I got my forum name, it was chosen after I had a Brain Haemorrhage after an RTA about five years ago and did manage to Dodge the Coffin (just). Re the by pass, so far so good, I just feel physically sore from the scaring, m'heart seems to be working much better since they have re-routed and better connected the blood supply, so fingers crossed mate.

Minimising the down time for the car seems like a good idea, in as much as if, Swmbo needs it it will be there for her.

I guess I am just trying to be careful because she's 10 years old and just clicked over 100 K. Better specify that's the car and not Swmbo, lol!

Get well soon. Hope all goes well. Car will be fine. Sister in law has a Corsa that was parked in the garage for three years and not started. Myself and the brother in law went down with a new battery and some new petrol. Few cycles of off and just before the final turn of the key. After 3 times of doing that it started fine and ticked over nicely. Also moved off oki as brakes hadn't been used to keep it in place

I don't doubt that she could take sitting out for a couple of months and would be fine. I have a garage and the facilities to take care and minimise my work at the other end, that's all, plus I'm a wee bit OCD about cleanliness (ok, a lot OCD, lol.) I was curious to see what, if any, other precautions members might take.

Dehumidifier in the garage and a couple of sponge ones in the car, maybe put something under it to prevent tyre flat spots

Brakes off too and battery charger as said above
