Overtaking like a ****

Featured Replies

The A6 is like that between Finedon and Kettering.

Due to a load of accidents, hatching has been put down the middle but people still overtake.

The police are often their filming motorists and sending them a present by post.

Due to speed or overtaking?

Learning to overtake safely in a low powered car makes for good tuition.

You have to be absolutely sure you have sufficient clearance to complete the manoeuvre so there are no 'suck it and see' decisions, everything is meticulously planned.

More than 100,000 miles in a 70bhp diesel Peugeot 306 has taught me well.

I agree!

But the learning continues in something faster too.

Things like moving over onto the other side of the road for increased visibility before deciding whether to open up and go, or just pull back inline again.

Trying that in a low powered car just isnt really possible lol.

Due to speed or overtaking?

Both.

It's designated as a red route due to 6 fatalities in the space of a few months back in 2012. Iirc half were motorbikers

I think the problems we see today on our roads have one outstanding reason which we didn't have in the 1970's when I learnt to drive.

A basic selfishness and lack of consideration for anyone else - otherwise why would:

 (i)   Drivers deliberately stop in traffic on a section of road painted "KEEP CLEAR"?

(ii)   Drivers deliberately block a junction in traffic, stopping the progress of oncoming/emerging traffic which could otherwise proceed unhindered?

(iii)  Drivers leave it until the last few yards to cut in to take a motorway junction when they have had notices at 1 mile and a 1/2 mile?

(iv)  Drivers persist in using hand-held mobile phones at the wheel, or phones with a wired earpiece, when the accident statistics are proven and the 3 point penalty has been doubled to 6?

(v)   Drivers pulling out in front of others and not accelerating away to match your speed - Highway Code states you should never cause another vehicle to swerve or slow down as a result of your actions.

(vi)   Drivers proceed at normal pace without easing up, or even accelerating, when being overtaken.   When one learns to drive, the instructor tells you to keep a good lookout in your mirrors and ease off the gas when someone is overtakiing you - it is common courtesy to help them pass you just that bit quicker!

In the days when we had a centre overtaking lane, it was accepted that vehicle proceeding uphill had right of way.   The trouble was that once you committed yourself to overtake, it was difficult to pull back in once you realised you made a bit of a boo-boo!   Let's face it, every driver - no matter how good you are or how many "advanced" courses you have done - will make a mistake every now and then.   Most mistakes you get away with, but taking on a head-on collision is one you probably won't walk away from - the authorities were right to do away with centre lanes!

This compilation backs up my theory:

Some general examples of bad driving in that vid but nothing spectacular and tbh I got bored after 2-3min so didn't watch the whole 16minutes. Most of the clips involve common things you encounter every time you get in the car, which I guess might be your point lol.

Exactly so!

The video shows a lot of the roads I drive daily and tbh he could be more considerate in some instances...  I've just put a couple of comments on the video with reference to a few clips, peek a boo cyclist is a regular occurrence...

I sat through the whole of the video, getting increasingly stressed about it.

I can't remember the last time I watched such smug, holier-than-thou selected rubbish.

It seems thatthe author is an example of the "anyone who drives slower than me is an idiot, anyone who drives faster is a lunatic. Only I am perfect" syndrome, and is obsessed that no one should ever be allowed to overtake.

Ever

Anywhere

Nobody will ever agree on a certain way to drive will they hsha.

Sometimes, i think people are really scared to overtake.

Like, following a car doing 30mph in a 60. Theres a big queue behind. Theres loads of opportunities to overtake but the first car wont, n then the further back in the queue you are, the harder it gets.

I guess different people are just uncomfortable doing it

That really ****s me off.

If I'm sat behind something that I dont want to overtake, I'll leave a nice size gap in front of me so if someone behind chooses to overtake they can do me, then pull in and do the truck/car in front in another moved if needed rather than have to overtake 2 or 3 cars in one hit. I dont understand what the issue is with people who have the attitude 'I dont want to overtake so no other ****er should'

Exactly! I do that too.

Sometimes though, and this only usually happens in the car. Somebody leaves a nice gap I'll overtake them and jump into it, in order to make progress. But then, they start flashing me, calling me a ****er etc n tail gating me.

I mean. If everybody else is happy going that slow, thats fine, but then having a go at me when i overtake. Cheers! Haha.

I'll only do that if im sure i can get past the rest of em at some point though. No point just being a little further forward in the queue lol

People flashing behind me when I've done a perfectly reasonable overtake is one of my pet hates! Happens a lot when I'm in the M135i lol. Usually get it from people in mid-spec diesel Audi A3/A4 who can't get their head around the concept that another car could possibly have enough overtaking power to get past their 'beast'.....

I get it in a 70hp fabia, so it must be terrible in the 135i! Haha.

They even do it when im on the bike sometimes. Its like... Im only using about 1/4 throttle to overtake lol.

And thats another one actually.

Yanno when you're really going for it. N i mean like, properly shifting. Why do people flash you going the other way?

I know im going fast, I've got my own speedo.

Happens on the bike alot n my mate said hes had it alot on fast cars.

Why is it?

Yeah I could understand it if it was a close shave and was a daft manuevre putting people in jeopardy but some people will do it even if the gap is huuuuuuge. I don't think they fully realise that a high performance vehicle often only needs a tiny gap to get past and is therefore exposed on the 'wrong' side I the road for much less time than they would think. Obviously blinding the oncoming overtaking car with your main beam makes the situation far safer........lol

Haha i know yeah! 'This guy looks like hes doin about 130mph, Id best blind him with full beam'

Personally, if im tootling along in the car and a fast car approaches behind, I'll move over to the left abit, let the window down a little for the sound, and smile lots as they fly past.

C63's are very good for the overtaking soundtrack.

Also, am I the only one to see the irony of these 2 quotes:

"A basic selfishness and lack of consideration for anyone else"

and

"No I'm sorry you can get lost. I'm sick of people coming up the right lane for a left turn."

Whatever happened to merge in turn?

Let's just clarify something  here.   The "You Tube" video is not mine so the two quotes are not mine.    The only quote from me is the "Basic Selfishness and Lack of Consideration for Anyone Else" which is true!

In that case I apologise and retract my comments.

As you posted the video under the remainder of your post without further accreditation I assumed it was yours.

I wasn't, and I learnt 30 years ago or so.

To quote LKJS, "It's number two who makes the queue".

To quote LKJS, "It's number two who makes the queue".

True that!

And when youre further back in your average car or whatever theres nothing you can do, without a death wish that is

I always thought it was common sense to stick to the left of these sorts of roads if you're not pushing on, anyone that doesn't is not being very observant in my view.

Define "pushing on".

I don't expect to be forced to drive in the gutter when I'm doing 60mph because some arse wants to do 80 and overtake regardless of the presence of oncoming traffic.

Likewise, I don't expect to have to dive left because someone wants to play chicken with me.

It's arrogant, and it's extremely dangerous.
