printers

Featured Replies

I'm in need of a new printer. Needs to be an all in one, with WiFi so I can print from my phone/tablet/laptop. Under £100 ideally with lowish cost inks..ideally individual colours.

Any suggestions?

I just bought an Epson XP-315,for just under £50. Nice little all in one printer with individual inks, and prints from ipad/phone easily.

Do you really need a scanner? Like every day you have something you need to scan & print off? I use my scanner about twice a year so I just have a Canon one on the shelf which I take down and plug in whenever I need to use it. After that my printer is a Dell 1350 CNW wireless laser, and is quite compact really all things considered. Cost me £100 three years ago with full toners, and I've replaced them once at a cost of £22 for a full set. And I use my printer for all my works invoices, the kids school and college stuff, the eldest daughters Christmas moneymaker where she prints off and delivers letters from Santa to ikkle kids (I kid you not, gets dressed as an elf and goes round knocking on doors telling kids they've been good all year and Santa is sending them a special present for Christmas), and all sorts of other stuff.

Cheap printers mean expensive ink in tiny carts; I blew nearly £200 on an Epson WP-4535 over 6 months ago and still havent used up the "demo" carts.

It has everything,

scanner

copier

fax

wifi

ethernet

usb drive port

Photos arent the best, but everything else is as good as the laser at work, but FASTER and cheaper!!!

I would advise look for the cheapest then once you have run out of Ink get rid of the printer and buy a new one.

Doing it this way will save you money, I have done this for years because the price of a new printer with ink is a lot cheaper than getting replacement ink!

s0nix, read the post above yours.

The ink carts for my printer are each about the size of a 3.5" HDD - HUGE; yet the cost of each is no more than the tiny carts for my old HP

Ink consumption is very heavy on "photo quality"printers so avoid them.  Got my Inlaws a HP ENVY 4500 A-I-O around £50.  Cheap to buy and run, and it's cloud ready so you don't even need a PC to set it up.

Do you need to print photos regularly?

It's always worth looking at a laser printer instead as the ink doesn't dry out, and cost per print is far lower than any inkjet.

Whenever I want photos printing, I just use Asda at 15p per print.

My parents have a colour laser printer they purchased years ago because they got fed up with endlessly buying expensive ink cartridges., its used all the time for general printing and the odd photo. They have changed the black toner only twice in that time, and the colour ones are still the original ones. They bought some spare colour ones when they got the printer, they are still in their boxes.

The initial outlay is more, but the toner lasts ages and does not go off or dry, no print heads to buy etc. they just keep on going. Another benefit it speed, they can rattle off a 20 page colour document in the time it takes an inkjet to print a couple of pages.

This.

Buy a cheap laser for printing out emails and the like, then use a photo printing service for the occasional picture.

+1 have used an all-in-one samsung laser for I don't know how long, damn thing must be nearly 10yr old now. Last set of toners cost £25 for 2 from a refiller.

Lack of drivers will kill it.

Myth.

I always thought that as well, but my Epson is cheaper per page than any colour laser, and only fractions of a penny off of the cpp of an economic mono laser; speeds for anything other that picture printing are also faster.

Do they dry up in the print heads and then waste further ink running through a "cleaning" cycle though?

This is what I find the biggest use of ink on infrequent use inkjets.

Thanks guys, my little boy is starting to need to print things off for school (photos etc) and I often find the need to print parcel labels or tickets. We live 12 miles from the nearest supermarket so it gets quite expensive if you go down the print a photo at the supermarket route.

I've found a few and they don't need to be the greatest quality in the world either and like people have said, if the ink is expensive I'll just buy a new printer!

Thanks again!

I'd look round for comparable ink suppliers on line.  I've used a place caled Rapid resolutions over the years with no problems( now http://www.refillman.com/). Ink for mine ( Epson WF 2010) .Epson price ~ £30 , refillmanprice =£11.95. Never had a problem .

Recently bought a Epson XP-710 for £99.00 now reduced to £89.97 at PC World.

Features: WiFi - Scanner - Copy - Print both on Paper and CD/DVD disc, front paper loader, not computer reliant, can work independently.

Compatible ink cartridges 4 x 5 sets = (20) of all colours £5.99 free postage from E-Bay seller 'ukcompatibleink'

Epson replaceable ink cartridges  a silly price so I avoid them, apart from when machine was new with supplied Epson inks.

I always have used compatible inks, last printer Epson RX520 over 7 years old was still going strong, when given away..

You could also look into continuous ink systems   (CISS)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/ciss-continuous-ink-system

But you'd need to get a compatible printer as well.

Don't buy a continuous ink system or inks from ebay, most of them are cheap chinese crap. You can get a decent system for not too much money and quality pigment inks from City Inks. I have used their inks and laser toner for years and I haven't had any problems at all.

Not so far, the ink carts are similar to a CISS.

I tend to do a lot of batch printing with nothing much happening  for weeks or  months inbetween; so if the ink was going to dry up, it should have happened by now.

TBH the only printers I have had a dry-up issue with was an old, cheap Epson, and my old HP - but then I hadnt used it for over a year at that point (I was in China for much of the year).

I have a HP 2570 that I print maybe 2 pages a month on and have never had a cartridge dry up.

Worried it may have happened on the colour cartridge I ran off a photo, and considering its hardly ever used it printed perfectly fine.
